Jack Aubrey. Terror of the seas. Not a pirate. Like I always say, if you can't beat a bush with two birds, might as well gather moss. Awaiting orders.

Sophia's smile faded slightly at the utterance of Jack and the boys. "Yes," she said, "Jack does seem to have that effect on people. They're just naturally drawn to his sense of humour and demeanour." The last few words were nearly spat out with venom. But the momentary lapse in pleasantries faded quickly and Sophie was smiling once more.
"Let the boys be boys and do not worry about your children. I have spent much of my time with Doctor Maturin, and cousin Diana, and can assure you that Charlotte, and Gerald, for that matter will find themselves at home here, given time," Sophie assured.
Sophie glanced over at the children and was pleased to see that Charlotte and Fanny were amiably welcoming the two others to join in their game. Although the Wellesley children seemed hesitant, the Aubrey children were plenty welcoming. George had found himself a comfortable seat after tootling around the house and was playing with a toy horse not far from the others.
Jack Aubrey had managed to seat the older Wellesley children and was beginning to regale them with his favourite story of the Cacafeugo incident. The boy were eager to hear the story, and Jack was entirely invested in spewing the details that defined his career. It involved a lot of hand waving and sound effects that Sophie had only really seen him use when he was drunk or in the middle of a joke that he found horrendously funny. But that was what she fell in love with. A red faced, 18-stone, sailor with a heart even too big for his massive frame who was unfortunately gifted with a lame sense of wit.
Seeing Jack with those children, retelling stories and laughing between sentences, tugged at the strings of Sophie's heart. Realizing that she had fallen silent, Mrs Aubrey turned back to Elizabeth and patted her gently on the shoulder.
"To France? To make a fool of yourself? Impossible. There is no possible way that Elizabeth Pellew-Wellesley could ever be a fool or convince the populace so," Sophie declared. "Besides, Jack always say the French are fools by nature and beside them you will appear to be a pearl among swine. What could possibly go wrong?"
Liz sighed but a smile lingered on her lips, “it is the same in our house. Arthur Freese keeps teaching the boys his new words that he learns at school, and then Charles and Douro (Arthur) start repeating them around the children…I fear once Arthur returns from Paris then they’ll be no hope at all of breaking them of the habit. Wellington is the worst offender."
It seemed the Duke’s favorite word was ‘damn.’ It was always ‘damn this’ and ‘damn that’ and ‘damn me’ and ‘damn that incompetent fool!’ It was astonishing he could ever dream of suggesting he was better then those he led, especially with that language of his. His lack of knowledge regarding Greek and Latin certainly did even less to help his argument.
The children gazed wide eyed at Sophia, Gerald even mustered up a salute until Charlotte nudged him. Still, Charlotte herself had stood up a little straighter at that. “Aye Aye Captain-sir-ma’am,” Charlotte managed and then blushed, “I mean…yes, Mrs. Aubrey.”
By now Gerald was doing his very best to hide his amusement by glancing at the mantle across the room, but somehow his gaze kept coming back to his sister who by now was glaring at the floor. Her pride had been wounded by her mistake and now she was positively offended. Elizabeth watched the two with amusement and winked at Sophie, one hand on each of their shoulders.
It astonished her how incredible Jack was with the children. Even Douro had stopped being the serious, studious boy he was and allowed himself to laugh and carouse like any boy his age should. It brought joy to her heart to see. It was very hard for the boy, being the eldest of her brood by blood. It meant he was the heir and he bore the burden, even at this age, heavily.
Gently she gave both Gerald and Charlotte a little nudge, “why don’t you join George and the girls? I am certain you will get along splendidly.”
Charlotte looked back at Elizabeth helplessly and clutched her skirts tighter in her fists and Liz sighed, picking the girl up in her arms and kissing her cheek. “You will be alright, I promise. Yet you need to try…I know it’s scary, meeting new people always is, but they are just as unsure of you as you are of them.”
Blue eyes gazed back into her own steadily, pink lips turned down in a frown, the girl buried her face in Liz’s neck and muttered, “but they don’t have to be sure.”
Gently Elizabeth ran her hand through the blonde curls, amazed as always at this little child’s understanding of things that should very well be beyond her. She was right. How could she now lie? she couldn’t. That wouldn’t be fair. Her eyes met Sophie’s before she kissed the girl’s head.
“You are right. You didn’t choose your battleground, did you? but you, better then any one of your siblings, can learn it. You can make it yours. Think how nice it would be to have friends, and they could be your friends, but you have to try.”
She gently urged the girl to look at her and gave her a comforting smile, “will you do that?”
Charlotte bit her lip and took her time answering, finally she nodded, “yes mama.” “good,” she kissed her temple one last time and set her down. Gerald reached out and took the little girl’s hand, leading her to the little girls, hovering over her protectively.
Elizabeth turned to Sophie again, her eyes worried.
“She’s sensitive, so is Gerald. He’s protective of her, even though he is the one that get’s bullied. She is very much like Doctor Marturin. She loves exploring, and nature, and I fancy she will make an exquisite doctor if ever given an opportunity, but she is uncomfortable around children her own age. It is nothing against your girls, I promise.”
She looked at Jack and the boy’s again and smiled, “Jack is incredible with children. I haven’t seen Douro laugh like that in the longest time. I know with you two the kids will be in good hands. I, myself, would rather stay. I must go make a fool of myself in Paris though.”

Sophie smiled at the two children, her two daughters were giggling away and playing on the other side of the room while George toddled off and after Jack, Douro and Charles.
"Oh think nothing of it Elizabeth!" Sophie smiled brightly and waved to the two little children. "They are positively handsome children. Oh I would not worry over foul language. Jack has raise out son so much like a sailor that he was cussing from the moment he could speak. Perhaps I could try and wash out that foul language from the entire family." Sophie's eyes drifted over to her two daughters. She had heard them utter something foul the other day and refused to let it pass unnoticed.
"You should know," Sophie continued, turning her attention back to the Wellesley children, "we run a tight ship of the line. Keep everything ship-shape, including yourselves and we will sail smoothly. Do you understand?" She chuckled and smiled tenderly at the little boy and girl.
Jack, on the other hand, was struggling with the two boys. Douro and Charles were clinging to his arms and begging him to swing them around. "Come now!" Jack cried, "Is that any way for midshipmen to treat their captain?" The two boys gleamed.
"Does that mean you'll let us join your crew, Captain Aubrey?" One of them cried. Jack could not tell which though, as they moved too fast.
"Oh boys, you are the devil!" He laughed and raised his arms so their little feet dangled just above the floor. The boys chuckled in delight until they were lowered to the ground.
"Again, Captain! Again!"
“Sophie, I cannot thank you enough for watching the children. I know you have more then enough on your hands what with your own brood, but you must know this means the world to me.”
She held the woman’s hands in hers, her eyes conveying all her gratitude even if her words were not sufficient. She had heard rumors of the trouble brewing between Jack and Sophie and had seen it confirmed in his face that very day. Sophie hardly needed more things on her mind, and so it was a great kindness that the Aubrey’s had agreed to this. Her youngest daughter of four years, clung to her skirts, a tiny copy of her mother, and beside her stood a solemn, dark haired five year old boy. She looked down at the children and smiled warmly, “Gerald, Charlotte, this is Sophie Aubrey. A very good woman and I hope that while I’m gone you don’t grow to love her more, because then I’ll be positively hurt.” She chuckled and raised her head to meet Sophie’s eyes.
“Douro and Charles ran off as soon as they saw the Captain, you know how boys are. Charles is seven now and has no interest in his schooling and I am certain he is begging Jack to take him on as a midshipman before the war is over. Douro is eight and dreams of giving Bonaparte a ‘damn good thrashing’”
She blushed and Charlotte made a small noise as Gerald’s eyes widened. She covered her mouth, “well by heavens!” she sighed, exasperated, glancing at the two of them. “You both learned the word ‘damn’ at the age of three from your brothers, there is no point in acting innocent now.”
#elizabethwellesley#I haven't read up to the part with Jack's children in my re-read so I'm a bit fuzzy on their details#i'm assuming the two girls are like ten or so and the boy is toddler-ish??

Rule 1: Always post the rules
Rule 2: Answer the questions the person has asked you and write new ones
Rule 3: tag 11 new people
Rule 4: let them know you’ve tagged them
Any sort of transportation device you wish you owned? - Those fancy ships with the motors would be advantageous.
Hello, is this the Krusty Krab? - There better not be a crab on this ship. I hear they chew lines and get into food stores.
Do you play any instruments? If so, what do you play? If not, do you wish you played an instrument? What is it? - The violin. I do say it's a damned good instrument.
Favourite doctor(in any universe)? - Easy, my good friend Doctor Maturin
Which historical figure would you meet first if you could travel back in time? - Someone from my trade. I should like to see Lord Nelson again, or perhaps Sir Francis Drake.
Favourite type of music! - Any kind of music the dear doctor and I can play together.
Favourite time period! (if it’s in the future, invent what you imagine would be a good time period) - Well I quite like the time I live in now. But if I must, I quite like the evening, because it's not too hot, and not too cold. You can get away with a light sweater! Haha!
What character/person do you want to cosplay the most? - Cosplay? You mean dress in a costume? After that bear suit you cannot convince me to wear another costume.
What’s in your fridge? - We do not have fridges aboard, but we have casks of wine, grog, some hard tack, cheese, the basics.
Have you ever fallen up the stairs? - One time as a midshipman I was called up to the quarterdeck. I was a bit excitable and bolted up the steps and landed right on my face. Thought I hear from Stephen hat when I drink too much I loose all coordination.
Are you dreaming? - Right now? Possibly. These new-fangled computer things are certainly from a dream.
I don't follow/work with many other blogs. Is it alright if I keep these questions and just tag my good friend Stephen?
