Look guys, it is good to engage with people you don’t agree with 100% politically on occasion. This is not me telling you to try to befriend neo-nazis. I mean, as a leftist, sometimes you’ve got to meet a middle aged lukewater democrat where they’re at and try to open a dialogue to help educate them on issues and discuss your beliefs. If someone seems receptive to listening and learning, that is a great chance to speak and teach. I know it’s fun to make fun of the libs but sometimes ill-informed but well-intentioned Facebook liberals have had propaganda shoved down their throats for 50 years and just need someone to explain the issues to them in a way that is kind and not condescending. It’s not your job but it is nice, it is a nice thing to do and it is nice to try to treat others with understanding. This is a good time to do that, there are a lot of people out there who are frightened and confused.

This is something I think about a lot, being in a field dependent on constructive criticism.

Here’s the thing—people on AO3 write for free, and for fun (or at least, that’s the hope). And maybe I’m going to irritate some people for this, but constructive criticism is not valid unless it is asked for.

I ask for constructive criticism in my work every single day, all of the time. If I want a shot at getting published, at being a good professor and teacher, etc. I have to be better, for myself and my future students. I am actively seeking to be a better writer and communicator, always. And while I am always trying to be a better creative writer too, I am not asking for feedback online on the stuff that is, realistically, my escape from the ivory tower.

The day I publish a book will be different—that functions best with editors, beta readers, and so on because while it is creatively fulfilling, it is also a product. You’re spending your hard-earned money on that, and that opens me to your criticism if you find it was not money well spent! But the delightful thing about AO3 is that it is an archive. It does not produce products, it produces art and community. And it’s all for free!

So basically—if you’re an avid AO3 reader, and especially if you don’t write yourself—be kind. If you don’t see that “concrit” tag, don’t give it. If I want to open myself to criticism I will ask, and if I want advice, I will ask! But like unsolicited advice in real life, it isn’t good (or wanted) online either. At best it is well-intentioned but insensitive/rude, and at worst it makes you seem like a bit of an asshole. As everyone always says, just click away and move on with your day.

don’t know who needs to hear this but AO3 comments section is not Letterboxd. giving unsolicited criticism to a fanfic writer does not make you a “fanfic critic” because there’s no. such. thing.

giving unsolicited criticism to a fanfic writer just makes you a spoiled, rude, entitled asshole at best, makes the author stop posting their works altogether at worst.

a reminder that it’s always okay to just stop reading and quietly click away from a fic if at any point you feel like you don’t like it for whatever reasons. unless specifically asked, there’s no need to tell the author, whose work you read for free, how you dislike something they wrote for themself for fun.
