“Discipline is hard - harder than trustworthiness and skill and perhaps even than selflessness. We are by nature flawed and inconstant creatures. We can’t even keep from snacking between meals. We are not built for discipline. We are built for novelty and excitement, not for careful attention to detail. Discipline is something we have to work at.”
— Atul Gawande, The Checklist Manifesto

This👏is👏so👏important👏
I gave report to an oncoming nurse who immediately took an authoritarian stance with a scared psych patient. The situation escalated, and the patient ended up being chemically restrained. This patient had behaved perfectly for me all shift, and this had every possibility of being avoided. This nurse with “14 years of experience” refused to acknowledge my attempts at de-escalating the situation because she “has been doing this longer” than me.
I’ve had situations where I’ve taken advice from nursing students and it worked out fantastically. Never let yourself be in a position where you think you’re better than someone with less experience.

So MCAT scores came in today. I wasn’t even sure I was going to open them because we (metaphorically) got our teeth kicked in at work last night and I got under 2 hours of sleep so I wasn’t sure I was in a decent frame of mind to look. But thinking about it, yeah we got our asses handed to us all night, BUT I really want all that miserable about it. I was the senior medic on last night and it went great. I did something I’d only seen once perfectly and was able to teach it to my partner, having been given the chance to be senior meant I got to work with a new medic I’ve been dying to work with and honestly even busy and exhausted we had a great night.
So then my little bother called and with him on the phone I opened the scores. And it wasn’t as high as I wanted. But considering I had only 4 days (maybe more like 3 and a half tbh) honestly I did better than I should have. I absolutely annialated the CARS section. And crushed the psych/soc. Not unexpectedly, chem/physics is gonna need some work, bio was decent but unless it’s perfect there’s always room to improve. Honestly I did pretty well and my streak of being rewarded for the poor choice of winging it continues.
I’m probably going to apply to a couple of schools but I’m also preparing to take the test again in January with actual prep. I didn’t expect to be ok with, let alone happy about anything less than the score I designated as a cutoff score. But I’m also 5 years and three brain injuries out of college, so doing this well as a jumping off point is a really good indicator that this is all going to work out. Because I’m competitive at some places now, I’m choosing to try to be competitive everywhere

-my mcat score comes in tomorrow (yikes)
-I’ve had a rotten day
-I’m stressed literally every second of my entire life
-BUT I’m the senior medic on tonight and I’m pretty stoked about it because I’ve been waiting to work with this partner for ages!

medical specialties described as my classmates who want to go into said specialty
cardiology: was in a fraternity in undergrad; copy/pastes memes from r/medicalschool to our class group chat
ob/gyn: either was in a sorority in undergrad, or a straight guy whose friend group consists only of girls; would do anything for their friends
orthopedic surgery: jocks; will leave their belongings in a study cubicle overnight so that no one will take their beloved study spot
emergency medicine: also jocks; golden retrievers in human form
pediatrics: humor is coping mechanism of choice; always has snacks on hand no matter the situation
infectious disease: really wants you to know that they did research during undergrad; scarily good at memorizing things
dermatology: never comes to class except for exam days; good fashion sense
family medicine: the chillest; always up-to-date on current events; has the best takes
psychiatry: goes to school events for the free food; submits assignments due at midnight at 11:59 PM

TLDR: even when someone is being shitty to me I apparently can’t help but still help with medic school things and clinical things because people deserve good care. Also I was really excited work wanted me to get my instructor cert and I didn’t get any excitement in response and it bummed me out even though I should expect it.
I’m so annoyed by my dad right now. A few months ago (early June maybe) I called him out for remaining friendly with someone who’d assaulted me (long story, very short version: small town ems bullshit, the guy is a terrible person, I was one of many and probably the least horrible one, guy is also a terrible emt and provider so I don’t see any reason to even attempt to deal with him)
So months ago i, for the second time, had told my dad about it, more clearly. And I can’t remember what exactly was my tipping point but I was like if you’re gonna keep being friends with someone like that, I don’t need you in my life. I messaged him once on Father’s Day (because my grandmother asked me to not because he deserved it) and haven’t heard from him since except for occasional memes on Instagram, performative “proud” comments on my Instagram and Facebook (or commenting on my goalie position even though I’m a where higher level netminder than him 🙄) but mostly I’ve heard from him when HE needs help with homework or a clinical judgement and the worst part of that is that even though he’s useless as a parent and questionable as a person sometimes he’s a good emt and is gonna make a good medic and I can’t not help someone with clinical stuff because we need more good medics out there, and we need good patient care and I cannot help myself when asked to help with things like that. So anyway I’m annoyed that he only interacts performatively or when he needs something but when I told him (via messenger, where no one else could see him be “proud”) that work wants me to go to the instructor program to teach emt and medic courses, I got crickets. Anyway that’s my rant
