Dr. Gabel, being a faculty member and Co-chairman of the Basics Course on hair restoration, was honored to be asked to give a lecture to physicians who are learning about hair restoration at the 2019 ISHRS Annual Meeting in Bangkok, Thailand. This is an important step in helping future doctors who perform these surgeries posess the latest and greatest techniques to obtain the very best results for their patients.

Female pattern hair loss is relatively common and affects about 40% – 50% of women with some degree of thinning in their lifetime. Female pattern hair loss is different from male pattern loss and tends to be more diffuse. Psychologically, the effects of hair loss for women can be significant and negatively affect their self-confidence in both personal and professional environments.
There are a number of causes of hair loss in women. Most commonly, female pattern hair loss is caused by the actions of two enzymes: aromatase (found predominately in women), and 5-alpha-reductase (found in both men and women). In many cases, there is no clear etiology for the hair loss in women and an experienced physician should perform a thorough workup. There are several causes of hair loss in women such as thyroid or iron deficiency, hormone imbalances, gynecologic conditions such as polycystic ovary disease, or stress. In some cases, a scalp biopsy may need to be done for the diagnosis.
The pattern of hair loss in women tends to be more diffuse then men. The Ludwig scale is typically used to classify hair loss patterns in women. Additionally, some women develop significant hair loss in the frontotemporal angles, which limits them from pulling their hair back.
Type I: Hair loss is so mild at this stage that many women are unaware it has occurred. The visible hairline is usually unaffected.
Type II: In this stage, hair loss becomes more moderate and noticeable. Women might experience an increase in shedding and thinning of the hair.
Type III: Hair thinning is more difficult to camouflage at this stage as hair loss becomes more severe. Unfortunately, women with this stage of hair loss may not be good candidates for surgery.

Dr. Gabel and the Gabel Center are pleased to announce that he is regularly performing the “no-shave” FUE harvest technique for hair restoration surgery. Using the “no-shave” follicular unit excision (FUE) technique, Dr. Gabel offers patients the ability to have a full FUE hair transplant while retaining their hair at a normal length in both the donor and recipient areas. This technique allows patients to return to their daily activities with minimal evidence that a hair transplant was performed. Read more at our blog here:

The frontal hairline is arguably the most important area of a hair transplant. Not only is it the most visible portion of a hair transplant, but ultimately defines and frames the face. Tremendous variations exist in facial features, and creating a natural hairline not only requires superb technical skills, but an artistic approach is essential in order to mimic nature as much as possible.
Hairline designs differ from patient to patient based on many factors, including the patient’s sex, physical characteristics (facial size, shape), hair color/density, ethnicity, and patient’s individual desires.

Coming up - Dr. Gabel discusses non-shaven FUE procedures at the office! Many patients are requesting this since they can keep their hair long, which covers the surgical sites. Since it isn’t as invasive as a traditional FUE surgery, it also reduces the time away from work. #nonshavenfue #gabelcenter @gabel_center

I've had multiple procedures now with Dr. Gabel and have always been super impressed with everything and my whole experience of being a patient of his. From his ability, his staff, his bedside manner, and his care for his patients it shows in his work. His work has always been the best which is obviously the most important, but (as a physician myself) I've been very impressed with the amount of time he spends with me and his thoroughness to go over all my surgical and non-surgical options.
With every surgical procedure I've had with him afterward I'm always impressed with how easy the whole thing was. His staff makes you feel so comfortable from the start. He's always very knowledgable about all the newest technique. He seems to truly care about his patient's happiness/outcome and makes me feel important and that I'm getting the best care.
I researched loads of other doctors and I'm beyond happy that I went with Dr. Gabel. He's the only one I'll let work on my hair. I would give him my highest recommendation. If you're thinking about it, it's worth going to see him.
