Tired boy and his cat. I’m watching Tales of the City, which has a trans masculine character. At one point, he’s told that someone misses “her” meaning his pre-transition self and hearing that was like a hot knife to the heart. I hate the idea that people “lose” our pre-transition selves, and I don’t like the term “deadname” (though I use it because it’s somewhat more prevalent than “previous name” or “old name” or “birth name”). I’m not dead. I’m not a different person. The old me never left. I’m still the same person I’ve always been, always. But now I look more like what I should have looked like. Now I look and feel more like who I really am. No one goes away when they transition. We are who we are, and always will be. The changes are just packaging (though that can often be just as important to our wellbeing too). There’s no one to miss.
