Imm5285 Walkthrough
Hi friends! Sorry for the long delay between updates; I've spent the past few weeks gathering the necessary evidence and documentation for my relationship. It takes a fair bit of time to do that, so give yourself a couple months to do so! Today I'll be walking you through the Spouse/Common-law Questionnaire - IMM5285. This requires information from both the sponsor and the spouse. Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer. I’m just a fellow applicant working my way through the application package to hopefully get my permanent residency.

IMM5406 - Additional Family Information
Hello, friends! Today, I completed the Additional Family Information form - IMM5406. This is meant to be filled out by the Principal Applicant, their spouse/common-law partner, and all dependent children who are 18 or older. Clarification: If your spouse is your sponsor, they do NOT need to fill out their own copy of this form. This form is otherwise very straightforward and simple.
Disclaimer: I am not a lawyer, I'm just a fellow applicant slowly working my way through the application package.
Whooooo! That's it for today!

IMM0008 - Generic Application Form For Canada
Hey friends! Today I completed the IMM0008 form - Generic Application Form for Canada. This form is meant to be completed by the Principal Applicant.
As always, please remember that I am just an applicant like you and I am not a lawyer. If you ever have any questions, you can certainly ask me, but I whole-heartedly recommend calling CIC to get answers right from the source.

IMM1344E - Application to Sponsor, Sponsorship Agreement & Undertaking
Disclaimer: I AM NOT A LAWYER. I'm just going through the Immigration process like everyone else, because I fell in love with a Canadian. If you have any doubts or questions, Google is your buddy and the CIC Call Centre is your absolute best friend.
Alright! So, today we begin the long and arduous process of putting an application package together. I'm going to be submitting the Application for Permanent Residence From Within Canada – Spouse or Common-Law Partner in Canada Class (IMM 5289).
The Application Package: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/spouse.asp
The Instruction Guide: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/applications/guides/5289ETOC.asp Today, I am completing IMM1344E - Application to Sponsor, Sponsorship Agreement & Undertaking.
For this form, you will need information from the Sponsor, the Principal Applicant, and the Cosigner (if applicable. Not required if you don't have one.)
Walkthrough behind the cut!
#1. I phoned CIC's call centre and was told that there are options available if you continue processing, so I chose yes, but this may not be right for everyone. #2. When they send documents, what language do you want them to be in? #3. VERY IMPORTANT: The co-signer is NOT the person being sponsored! A co-signer is a person who is helping to provide financial support, such as if you and your spouse are adopting & sponsoring a child to come to Canada. If the sponsor does not have a Canadian spouse helping in this process, check NO. #4. Name of the person being sponsored. Family Name = their last name/surname as it appears on passport Given Name = their first name as it appears on passport (I also include my middle name, as that's how it appears on my passport.) #5. When was the person being sponsoring born? #6. How is this person related to the Sponsor? You may need to provide some dates here, depending on the category you select.
Sponsor Personal Details
#1. Sponsor's name (as listed on passport.) Family Name = their last name/surname as it appears on passport. Given Name = their first name as it appears on passport
#2. Any alternate names the Sponsor has ever gone by. It asks you to include both aliases and nicknames in addition to legal names, so unless your nickname is something like Rainbowpoop, I would include it.
#3. Sex of the Sponsor. I think and hope the options are an effort to be inclusive to trans individuals and people who identify outside of the gender binary. As my Sponsor is cis, this was an easy question for me, but if your Sponsor identifies otherwise, you should definitely phone CIC to get their recommendation here (because "unknown" is the only additional option and that is not the catch-all they think it is.)
#4. When was the Sponsor born? #5. Where was the Sponsor born? You only need their CITY and their COUNTRY. #6. What is the Sponsor's status in Canada? Basically, what they want to know here is if your Sponsor is a citizen or permanent resident of any sort in Canada. #7a-c. ONLY ANSWER THIS QUESTION IF THE SPONSOR IS A PERMANENT RESIDENT OR NATURALIZED CANADIAN CITIZEN. a. When did your Sponsor get their status? b. Client ID of your Sponsor - you should be able to find this on the immigration paperwork they were given while going through their own process. c. Check the box 'yes' if their name is the same. Check the box 'no' if the Sponsor's name has changed since they immigrated to Canada. If their name has changed, fill in the Family and Given Names boxes. #8. a. What is the Sponsor's current marital status? b. If the Sponsor is married or in a common law relationship, when did this relationship begin? c. What is the name of the Sponsor's spouse/common law partner? Remember, they want surname in the first box and first name in the second. #9. Has the Sponsor previously been married or in a common law relationship? If yes, fill in the blanks. Sponsor Contact Information #1. Fill in the Sponsor's address at which they get their mail. Not all fields will necessarily apply, so read carefully! (For example, mine does not have a PO box or a district, but yours might.) #2. Does the sponsor live at the same place where they get their mail? If yes, check the 'yes' box and move on. If not, check the 'no' box and fill in the address where the Sponsor lives. #3. Primary phone number at which the Sponsor can be reached. #4. An alternate phone number for the Sponsor. It's okay if they don't have one. #5. Sponsor's fax number. It's okay if they don't have one. #6. Sponsor's e-mail address. It's okay if they don't have one. Important: If you put an e-mail in, you are authorizing CIC to transmit ALL correspondence, including your file and personal info, to this specific e-mail address. If your e-mail is unreliable, DO NOT PUT IN AN E-MAIL. If you trust your e-mail to deliver everything and prefer faster updates, then go ahead and put in an e-mail. I personally chose not to include my Sponsor's e-mail. Sponsor Residency Declaration Does the Sponsor live outside of Canada? If yes, where do you and your sponsor intend to live once you become a permanent resident? Sponsor Eligibility Assessment If you & the Sponsor live in (or will live in) Quebec, skip questions 8, 9, 10, and 15. All of these are fairly straightforward yes/no questions for the Sponsor. If you don't know what one of them means, Google is your friend. If you can't find it on Google, call CIC. If you're outside of Canada, get your Canadian Sponsor (or someone they know in Canada) to call. Seriously, if you can get through to an agent, they are super helpful. The following pages consist of the Undertaking Agreement - basically, these are the conditions you promise the Canadian government, as a Sponsor, that you will fulfill for the person you are Sponsoring. Take your time. Read the agreement carefully. This isn't something you should skip. READ IT. If you can't agree to all of it, don't sign it, don't be a sponsor.
If you can, then the Sponsor, the person being Sponsored, and the Cosigner (if applicable) should sign and date the last page in the spaces provided.
Ta-daaaa! You've just completed IMM1344E!
