A Guide to Spring

The new year starts with calm warmth

Preparing us for what's to come forth

As we prepare for the big world outside

We see the valley come alive

Along the paths and within the grass

We find Horseradish and Leeks amass

Within the suns heat to remove winter gloom

We see Dandelions and Daffodils bloom 

Prep your soil for the year

Parsnips and Potatoes are sure to appear

Joined with Beans and Cauliflower

Alongside Strawberries that never sour

Sunfish and Shad dance within the river

As within the sea rest the flounder

When it comes to rain and night

Eel and Catfish put up their fight

To join the town in the festivities together

Prep to run in the Egg Festival light as a feather

For when the time comes to dance and sing

Hope you’ve brought a hand to cling Now you’re ready for spring to begin

As snow layers start to thin

Stay warm among the sun

As the old year has been done

Horizons - poem by me

Sun rays shine down on the sea

Illuminating the sand and palm trees

As the water flows against the shore

Showing what was untouched before

The native trees flowed in the wind

Offering new opportunities to begin

Their fruit provides a sweet taste

In this humble new place

The butterflies flap in the breeze

As insects crawl up the trees

The fish swim in the river to the sea

And in the shallows they greet me

Campsites set on the ground

As we begin to look around

With a net and pole, we search the wilds

Understanding this new place undefiled

First Victory

A long battle fought on a terrible night

Sent the world into a great fright

An evil purge that plagued this world

A new terror now unfurled 

An evil presence watched overhead

Scaring the world and hiding the undead

It soon reigned down with its might

Cursing all within its sight

The watcher stalked as the people die

Attempting to save themselves from the Eye

It hunted without mercy, breaking populations to zero

Until finally, they arrived with a new hero

They fought all night with whatever they had

Small staffs, bows, and swords they clad

The Eye was strong but their hope was great

But as the moon fell soon day would break

The battle took its turn

As the heroes fought for victory to earn

Almost when the eye had run away

A final arrow would finally slay

The victory was celebrated 

As the townspeople felt elated

As night fell once again

They breathed in relief as it filled with zen

The dark was cooling and calm belief

All knew that it was only brief

And as the heroes looked at the sky

They saw a thousand lanterns rise

Home in the Valley

The rivers wind along the bend

That leads out to the ocean sands

Above the shore and within the trees

Rests this village above the sea

The people walk around the town

Never greeting each other with a frown

As two separate souls stroll down the aisle

They look at each other always with a smile

Twice each season they always gather

To celebrate the world and one another

Everyone gathers for the festivals

Where fun and joy are always plentiful

In spring they gather first in the town

To search for eggs hidden around

As the cool air had gone and blown

They collect and dance as flowers grown

As summer comes they gather more

On the beach to dance and watch waves pour

Then again to listen to the sea

As rare jellyfish dance with glee

The cold enters in the fall 

The people showcase their products to all

And when the air chills to ghastly nights

They all meet on the last in fright

Snow comes with winter's freeze

As the villagers fish on ice and sneeze

They all prepare for the upcoming feast

To celebrate this year cease

The place we've come to know

A new place to explore

A new world of so much more

Endless skies and distant plains

A world that never felt the same

We started off with a camp

But it soon became just too damp

So we built a roof and made a home

One that made us feel not alone

When we finished and sat inside

Smiles and joy flourished with our pride

We would take this world so slow

As we enjoy what we’ve come to know

In the morning we packed our things

And journeyed off as the early birds sing

At noon we’d make a picnic on the grass

And name all the clouds that come to pass

We got our stuff and walked more

Down the cliff and through the moors

We saw the water start to flow

As the oceans air started to blow

We sat alone on the sand and sea

A world of beauty for you and me

As nights rose and the sun fell below

Together we would march home

Longing for the North

I miss the winter breeze

Sun shining through tall trees

As they soon became cinder fuel

And light the path of an ancient tomb

I miss the open road

New faces and beautiful places bestowed

Travelers walked and roam

As the rest all march home

I miss the autumn forests

Long stretches of an orange chorus

Walking among the fallen leaves

I listened for the crunching beneath my feet

I miss this place so kind to youth

It always offered me a large truth

And as long journeys pushed forth

 I am longing for the north
