REBLOGGING THIS AGAIN BECAUSE I’M STILL MAD
OK, so I found out Firebrand is allied with Dorammu in Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, and I’m here to talk about why that’s bullcrap
Firebrand’s main nemesis in the Gargoyle’s Quest series is Breager, a dark being whose goal was to take over all dimensions.
Dorammu is a dark being whose main goal is to take over all dimensions.
THEY BASICALLY MADE FIREBRAND TEAM UP WITH MARVEL’S VERSION OF HIS ARCH-NEMESIS.
Lore-wise, it would have made more sense for him to be teamed up with Morrigan Aensland. Firebrand in the Gargoyle’s Quest usually was sent on his quest by the ruling class in Demon Realm, because Firebrand is a royal knight (or the demon version of it). Morrigan Aensland is a demon princess, so it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility she asked him for help, especially since he was a major hero to the demon realm.

Demon's Crest (SNES)

I remember when Demon's Crest was released by Capcom in 1994, it was the golden boy of video game critics in all of the magazines. People couldn't heap enough praise on this game, even though it looked to me like a pretty standard action platformer not unlike Castlevania. I was curious to see what the hype was all about, but could never find the game for rent at my local video stores. It's not difficult to imagine, living in the Deep South as I was in the early 90s, that retailers were skittish about offering a game with "demon" in the title, especially during the height of the violent video games controversy. It's silly, but that's almost certainly why I never saw this game anywhere EVER except for reviews in GamePro or Electronic Gaming Monthly.
Demon's Crest is a Ghosts n' Goblins spinoff where you get to play as one of those annoying red demons that kill probably 95% of newcomers to Ghosts n' Goblins right in the first stage. This demon's name is Firebrand and he's on a quest to find magical crests that can increase his power enough to defeat a demonic despot named Phalanx. Each crest that you obtain gives you different abilities, which opens up new areas Metroid style, allowing you to obtain more crests. The more that you obtain, the more likely the odds that you will unlock a different ending.
I managed to get three before beating the game and getting the worst ending. I was confused, as I hadn't been playing the game for very long and couldn't believe I'd already beaten it so quickly. I was going to include in my review that it was criminally short, but I did some research and discovered that I had barely scratched the surface with my playthrough and that's on me.
That being said, it's a pretty cool game! It's not the second coming, like those early reviews made it seem, but it's a solid 2D action platformer and a very inspired gameplay spin set in the Ghosts n' Goblins, though much more merciful than those games. The graphics have a really cool, Gothic feel and the controls are tight. For casual retro gamers, it's definitely what I would consider a "hidden gem".

The thing I can’t stop thinking about ever since I started playing Demon’s Crest
In Gargoyle’s Quest, Firebrand was a well-respected warrior, turned out to be the legendary descendant of the original Red Blaze and thus the current Red Blaze, and quickly became the hero of all of Ghoul Realm/Demon Realm.
Tumblr media
In Demon’s Crest, just as Firebrand is about to officially end a giant civil war over the magical stones, Phalanyx cheap-shots him when he’s already weakened from battle, sets Demon Realm on fire, and then frames Firebrand for burning Demon Realm, and turns everyone against him.
Tumblr media
Phalanyx took EVERYTHING from Firebrand except his will, and looking around in the few posts proving this game even has a fandom, it feels like it doesn’t get mentioned much.
Like, there is so much potential here for angsty fan-art, fan-fiction and comics, and I feel like this should be taken account during the few times his character is analyzed, and honestly makes his journey in Demon’s Crest feel a lot more impactful. But nooooooo, y'all just wanna draw him posing and looking cool.

I recently spent all day playing and beating Demon’s Crest, which means I’ve finally completed all three Gargoyle’s Quest games. They’re okay.
Here’s a Firebrand doodle to celebrate.
