A BG3 Regency Week chapter-fic

Dearest and most dreary of readers, I write to you from locales most picturesque and pastural. This author has succumbed to one of the many inanities of the social season — I speak of course of the celebrated tradition of a country ball. That's right, after spending up to nine months of the year toiling away on your individual estates, far from civilisation, you flock to the streets of Baldur's Gate for a few short weeks of social interaction and decent food...

... only to turn around and dash straight back to the countryside for a party. A party, one might hasten to add, that could indubitably be more accessible and comfortable were it held less than a full day's ride from the city. It's times like these that this author despairs that he will ever understand the flippant desires of society, but then one simply reassures oneself that it is best not to understand you people.

Forgive my verbosity, and allow me to introduce the subject of my verbal meanderings: the venerable retired General Ketheric Thorm, Lord of Moonrise, hosted a ball this weekend in honour of his newly announced engagement. Whilst this seems unusual for any who recall his Lordship's deep devotion to his late wife, he made assurances that the mysterious dowager said to have caught his eye is 'absolutely impossible to resist'. Were the announcement not tantalising enough, there are whispers of familial dissatisfaction with the news, as Lady Isobel Thorm was not in attendance all weekend. We have heard she may have, in fact, eloped with Archduchess Aylin!

Speaking of surprise engagements, let it be known that this author was the first to report on the engagement of Captain Tavares in our last printing. Yes, wretched readers, love is truly in the air, so hold your breath and open a window until it clears. Captain Tavares has confirmed her upcoming nuptials to a Mister Astarion Ancunin, a fellow whom we know nothing about and who hardly seems worth knowing. Allegedly he has connections to the House of Szarr, but entreaties to the family go unanswered. I have always maintained that Lord Cazador's taste in decor is nothing short of trashy, and what could be more trashy than pledging marriage to someone you've just met? The captain and her bridegroom-to-be veritably stole the scene all weekend.
