The five types of writers block

Inspirationless: where you have the motivation but just can't think of anything good to write.

Motivation Deprived: you have the idea, but just, don't really wanna.

Pooped: Basically you have no ideas and don't really feel like writing anyways.

Procrastination: Where you are SO PUMPED TO GET THIS THING DONE!! But, there's that other thing, and, your show is on, and, you'll just do it tomorrow.

Writing while deliriously tired

While Writing: I'm so creative right now, it's like all the normal constraints have been lifted. Wow I wrote 2,000 words in 30 minutes! This is going to be great.

Rereading the Next Day: I used the word 'Beautiful' 8 times in this sentence and instead of 'reassuring' I wrote 'refrigerator.' Also the tenses switched 3 times in one paragraph and I started writing about a character who isn't even in this story.

the worst thing about writing is that you aren’t just a writer. you have to be a thousand things. a poet, a flirt, a weapons expert, a bleeding heart, a scholar, a legendary cook, a theorist, an engineer, a reckless teenage girl, a dying god. you have to be able to write monologues and speeches and heartfelt confessions, and you have to make them believable. writing is putting yourself into someone else’s shoes.

overcoming writer’s block

The only thing that has worked for me is basically quite simple… ROMANTICISE WRITING!! We all started because it somehow fascinated us and because it’s fun to do, so remind yourself of the things that you love so much about writing… I personally find myself thinking a lot of stuff along the lines of  “writing is so hard, man” or “it’s so much work” - blah blah blah But consider this:

writing is beautiful, writing is fun, writing is flexible, writing doesn’t judge you, writing demands nothing if you don’t let it

everything you write is under your control

you can sit there with a cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate and light some candles and put on a nice playlist if you want and get lost in your story again

basically have a date with writing

I promise you will work wonders again, even if it needs time

don’t you love that sound of your fingers flying over the keyboard?? it makes me, a smol bean,  feel hard working and important and professional

don’t you love the excitement of creating your characters with every single word you write about them?

isn’t planning out a plot the most interesting thing in the world? it can be challenging, yes, but also so much fun!

let your thoughts and feelings stream into your keyboard without a filter and see what happens if you dare to

write because writing is such a powerful, incredible, creative, healing thing to do 

if a good story comes out of it, even better

but don’t write with the intention of creating perfection, you will only block yourself and your creativity 

writing is your friend, man…it doesn’t have to be intimidating

And if you really don’t know what to write, I dare you to write about how beautiful writing is- it’s the perfect way to find your love for it back and let go of your fears, because I think that’s all a writer’s block is…
