Gem didn't need to be told twice to eat as much as he wanted. He was planning to do that regardless of whether she gave him permission or not. And, if she didn't eat any of it, there was gonna be nothing stopping him from eating the whole thing. He would make sure she didn't want any first, but otherwise? Fair game in his book. She'd put the biscuits out in the first place.
'Course, they weren't as good as at the Inn, but Gem wasn't gonna say that.
"Oh, y'know," Gem said with a little shrug. "As long as the weather holds, I should get it done this afternoon. Tomorrow midday, at the latest. If the weather cooperates." Gem tilted his head back, squinting distrustingly at the slightly grey sky.

“I have imagined Making love to you So often I am pulled ajar When you walk towards me, Merely, With all your clothes on. We have come together Countlessly That I can bear the distance Set by furniture and fabrics Intimate friends, the air And worst of all – The nights. I have come to believe In the power of these scenes That when I touch things – Bottles and handles, Light switches And the soft insides Of fruits – They squirm, Perturbed By the violence Surging through my thumbs. Strange. You have never kissed me. You brushed my elbow once As we crossed the street And my lower extremities Were honey: Every nerve, pore and cell The havoc Of hundreds and hundreds Of singing, sweet bees.”

Jessie's house was coming along. He figured it wouldn't be too much longer now before it was fully complete. Which was good. It was good to have finished projects on the Morey list, it gave them more clout. But, well, unfinished projects gave them money. And it gave Gem something to do.
He needed something to do and working with his hands was always his favourite thing. It had been a revelation when, at 13, his papa had put a hammer into his hand for the first time and he'd been able to build something, instead of tearing things down.
The pergola was child's play, really. Would only take a day to set up (shorter, if he wasn't on his own, but Gem liked working on his own and Jessie's little projects usually afforded him the ability to do that.) He was nearly finished now, up on a ladder, setting in some slats.
But, he was never someone to say no to food. So, he finished up what he was doing and then wandered over, wiping his hands on his bandana before shoving it back in his pocket.
"Just so you know," he said as he took a biscuit off the plate and bit into it, "I'm charging you for the break too. Thanks for the biscuits."

Well, that was it then, huh?
Not that Gem should be particularly surprised. His goodbyes had never exactly been ceremonial. When he'd been kicked out of his house, it'd been in a fit of rage. When he'd been carted off to prison, no one had listened to him saying he hadn't meant to--or what was happening? When he'd left prison, they'd handed him the clothes he'd come in with, that didn't fit him and didn't give him a single instruction, just told him he was free.
"Yeah," Gem said, working his jaw. It felt like he was chewing rocks as he ground his teeth together, trying to pulverize his anger into nothingness. "Well, have a good afterlife, I guess."

Gem did think it was stupid.
A zine wasn't a person. A zine didn't think and have feelings. A zine couldn't bully their way to sitting shotgun in Gem's truck while he ran errands. Or follow him around, yapping about high school gossip. Or call Gem in the middle of the night to pick it up from the sheriff's department after it had been detained.
A zine was just a shitty piece of paper. Tanya was delusional if she thought that would replace her.
"Well, sorry to be a disappointment," Gem spat, feeling ugly and awful inside. He wanted his fire back, so it could just burn everything into ashes, instead of the tears that wet his throat, burning in a worse, more horrible way.

Gem flinched when Tanya said dead.
He shouldn't, because she was right. He knew that she was dead. It had never bothered him. After all, his brother was haunted by ghosts all the time. Why shouldn't he get in on the action? Not to mention, the Inn and its ghosts--Lady Miracle, the Hawk Lady--whose name he could never remember, the Captain. Tanya was just another ghost.
But those ghosts weren't going anywhere.
So why did Tanya have to?
Why did she have to leave? He wasn't ready for her to. He didn't even know it was a possibility that she was going to. He'd thought she was safe. She couldn't be burned. She couldn't die. She wasn't going to leave. And now here she was--fucking leaving.
"Well, bloody good for you! Glad you're so ready to just leave us all behind or what the fuck ever. Excuse me for not being evolved enough to think this a good thing."

"Well, excuse the fuck out of me for not being okay with your little suicide mission."
Gem knew that was not--really what was happening here, but how else was he supposed to feel about it? Tanya seemed fine to him. After all, she was frustrating the hell out of him right now. Probably feeling nice and strong and solid. He didn't understand why she was talking all this philosophical shit.
Who cared if she had figured out the meaning of life or whatever?
Didn't it matter that there were people she was leaving behind? Was it really that fucking easy?
"I'm not protesting. Do whatever you want. Just don't expect me to send you off with well wishes when you're just--just fucking leaving."

"I didn't ask," Gem said with a little scoff.
Not that he was going to tell Milo this, but he wasn't in the fight club to learn how to fight. He was here solely to learn how to control his magic. If it had worked in the dream...maybe it would work in real life. (He didn't really believe that, but he needed to try something, otherwise he was going to end up back in prison. (He'd more ore less accepted this fate, if we are being honest.))
He didn't care about learning correct fighting styles. After all, he had the trump card: his magic. No one could get close to him with that. Maybe it was a crutch, but he didn't care. If it had any use, it was as a defense mechanism.
"How do you want to do this? Spar and see what happens?"
