Molly Nash’s Story
Fanconi Anemia is a rare disease that mainly affects the bone marrow and results in the decreased production of all types of blood cells. Most people haven’t heard of it...that’s because it’s not talked about. I wasn’t expected to live older than age 10. Yes, you read it correctly, age 10. However, my parents decided to conceive a baby through in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD), so the child could donate their cord blood to me and save me! Yet this is frowned upon... My brother, Adam Nash, was conceived from IVF and PGD, so he could donate his cord blood to save me, yet still be free of the disease himself. Before questioning the ethics, consider this: Can you imagine yourself or your child dying before the age 10, let alone all the procedures and treatments they would have to endure? Could you imagine yourself or your child spending the entirety of their childhood in a hospital bed and then dying there without experiencing life or seeing the world? Could you imagine the emotional stress and trauma that this disease produces for the patient and their family? And lastly, could you imagine the consistent financial costs required to keep yourself or your child alive?? I’m Molly Nash. I survived Fanconi Anemia, and it would not have been possible without technology. Fortunately, this havoc can be prevented with gene editing and the new technology of CRISPR and Cas9. You can literally create a perfect, healthy baby, free of disease and guaranteed to live a happy life! Take it from me, a girl who suffered for years, gene editing will save lives, and it is the future.
