so here's the thing. abandoning fics is good actually.

if you're a writer and you hate writing a thing? you can just stop. slap THE END? on the last chapter if you want to pretend like it's really finished, but mostly just free yourself from the prison of your own guilt. you're spending your valuable free time and mental space beating yourself up about a thing that was your choice to start writing in the first place. you decided to start making the thing, and you can also decide to give it up.

this also applies if you're a reader! starting a fic doesn't mean that you have to finish it. maybe the tags looked good. maybe the summary was intriguing. maybe you even liked the first couple of chapters. But if the story starts going in a direction that you don't like, if the author writes your favourite character in a way that doesn't vibe with you, if you just get bored with the premise and want something new, you're allowed to stop reading. Just because you sit down at the table with a whole entire cake doesn't mean you have to eat the whole thing. Sometimes you just want a little sliver, and that's just fine.

loving a story for a couple of chapters is still a lovely way to spend your time. get your enjoyment out of however much time you want to spend with it, and when that time stops being enjoyable allow yourself to move on.

falling out of love with something doesn't mean the love was never there. the love was there in the beginning, and it mattered, and it stays a part of you - even when it's not still there anymore.

howdy i recently posted my first sonic fic!! it's a fun team dark character study with many many swears

Summary: Omega did not come programmed with curse words in his vocabulary. Rouge and Shadow introduce him to a whole new world.

If Sonic ever grapples with PTSD or crashes out I think he should be totally oblivious about it. He's fine and he genuinely believes he's fine until he's very much not fine. Make him get confused at what a panic attack is only because he's never had one himself before, and HOO BOY is being on the receiving end of one a totally different experience than trying to help someone calm down from one.

Have Sonic hide, not in a "no I'm fine" *awkward smile* *runs off* sort of way, but as a "Yeah, I'm not doing my greatest, but I'm sorting it out! Thanks for asking!" sort of way- and have him genuinely believing what he says until the midnight crashout. Sonic is a Cool Guy, he strongly feels that as a part of his identity, so let him convince himself that he's Chill and Nothing Is Wrong and watch the fireworks go off.

The old "Sonic running away from his friends mid-conversation because they brought up the topic of his own emotions" should be used extremely sparingly for maximum oomph. For me that's climax-of-the-story type material. Definitely not a regular occurrence. Because running away is essentially an admission of guilt at that point, and I just don't think he'd do that unless under serious duress. This is the guy who runs towards world-ending peril, not away; the image of Sonic actually fleeing away from something that scares him? Fantastic, hits like a truck, 10/10 angst- you can't just squander that.

I truly think the difference between Sonic and Shadow is this:

Shadow knows exactly why he's feeling negative emotions even if he sucks at reading what said emotions actually are and expressing them healthily. He knew that seeing Maria get shot fucked him up royally even if he didn't know exactly what PTSD was at the time. He feels vindicated in the grief and rage and all that. He's afraid to show weakness, but definitely not afraid to show negative emotion and lash out.

Sonic has very little idea why he feels any negative emotions when he does. Unless he's explicitly sick with something that's making him feel poorly, the feeling will bubble up and he'll be like "why am I feeling like this? This doesn't make any sense. Nothing bad has happened!". Guy who Denies His Own Emotions, if you will. Guy who just assumes that his default needs to be chill/happy/cocky and sees any other emotion as a problem. Guy who thinks fighting off world invasions as a child is "normal" and nothing to experience negative emotions about. You get the gist.

TL;DR: I need a fic of Sonic crashing out and Shadow comforting him but where Sonic's crashout response is actually distinct to his character (super mega bonus points if it's not the Sonic Forces Torture Time that Sonic is crashing out over. Personal bias and all that.)

(500-word hc ficlet thingy)

In the usual “Team Dark shared apartment” situation, once they got comfortable enough around each other, Shadow and Rouge start a habit of stealing one another’s food occasionally. When caught, they’ve got different approaches:

E.g. when Rouge confronts Shadow, who's in the middle of eating her favourite yoghurt, Shadow doesn’t deny or plead the fifth. Instead, he shamelessly licks the spoon clean in front of her. Rouge makes a dive for the half-finished yoghurt, and it turns into a scuffle, Shadow holding onto the yoghurt-can with all his care and might, but it ultimately ending on the floor one way or another.

Meanwhile Rouge is more manipulative at heart + a compulsive liar. Among friends, it bleeds into her playful teasing:

Shadow’s standing arms crossed, in front of the TV, interrogating what happened to the baked goods he’d bought for himself. Rouge shuffles under the comforter on the sofa. “Oh, I don’t know”, she feigns innocence half-heartedly, trying to see the obstructed screen.

“There’s none in the fridge.” Shadow went out of his way to get them from a bakery in the morning. He’s more than a little peeved.

“Maybe you ate them already”, Rouge shrugs and settles into a comfier position on the sofa, trying to watch her show beyond Shadow’s crossed arms. (“Also, why do you keep your pastries in the fridge??”)

“No, I only ate three – there were four in total.” He prefers the fresh artisan taste to any store-brands, but they must be eaten the same day. He knows to not buy too many at a time.

“Dunno. I saw three. Pretty sure you ate them all already”, she fake yawns and shoos her hand at Shadow, “Go bother Omega about it.” She doesn’t want to miss any of the dialogue. (It’s on a streaming service and she could pause it but it’s about the principle of it all.) Shadow’s silent for a moment and Rouge expects him to finally leave, ready count her wins.

“…right.”

Rouge’s ear twitches at the resigned tone. She looks up at Shadow, not expecting his head to be turned downcast, eyes flickering across the floor: “Yes, I… must’ve forgotten.” He’s clutching at his forearms a little too hard.

Something heavy drops into Rouge’s stomach and she quickly shoots up from the sofa, comforter sliding off of her into a bundle on the floor:

“Ah- hun… nonono~ You caught me! Hah...”, she’s nervously hovering in front of Shadow, unsure how to place herself. “A girl’s gotta do what she’s gotta do to get her sweet cravings met, right? Ahhah~”, she curses how fake she sounds.

“I don’t care about- it’s not about that”, Shadow hisses through grit teeth, “It’s... I don’t remember how many I bought for sure. I think it’s four, but I can’t even remember how my errand run went earlier today. I- I don’t know for certain-”

“Those are normal things to forget...”

“You don’t get it! I don’t-”

“YOU ALWAYS GET FOUR!” Omega calls from his room. “THIS HABIT HAS REMAINED UNCHANGED FOR THE PAST SIX WEEKS. ORGANICS HAVE HARD TIME FORMING MEMORIES OF AUTOMATED PROCESSES AND HABITS WHEN THERE ARE NO DISRUPTORS TO MAKE THE INSTANCES STAND OUT. AS ROUGE DISCLOSED, YOUR MEMORY IS ‘MORE OR LESS’ WITHIN THE PARAMETERS OF AN AVERAGE MEATBAG.”

Shadow’s eyes are still too wide, and he’s intently looking at a wall with clenched fists, but he seems to have been surprised out of his would-have-been anxiety attack, clearly hearing Omega’s words.

“…SO STOP ‘FREAKING OUT’ – YOU TWO ARE INTERRUPTING MY RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES. – SHADOW; REMEMBER THIS ONE: YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL WITH YOUR BIOLOGICAL MEMORY STORAGE. YOU ARE NOT ME.”

Discreetly analysing Shadow’s state, Rouge dares to mutter: “…And thank god for that. No need for two people who bring up old shit in this household.”

Shadow huffs.

Character flaws for Team Dark

We all know that as fans we can get sappy with our favorite characters. This is not a bad thing! But sometimes it can be useful to include a character's flaws into a story. Here's some ideas.

Shadow:

He tends to bottle things up until he snaps

He complains a lot

STUBBORN

Pessimist! He always expects the worst out of situations or people.

He's gruff in conversations. Not very charismatic and prone to putting people off when he meets them.

Secretive- he'd much rather deal with something alone than show any sort of weakness.

Thinks of himself not as the superior person, but the superior tool for getting any job done. If anyone else tries to solve a problem, he rolls his eyes, assume they failed, and steps in to deal with the problem himself.

Obligatory self-sacrificing idiot tendencies mention.

Obligatory tragic backstory/PTSD symptoms mention, but inject a little bit more of the not-as-pretty PTSD symptoms and less of the beautiful tragic nightmares, mkay?

Rouge:

Liar liar! Pants on fire! This is a girl who lies! To everyone! Even her friends if it fancies her!

Of Team Dark, she's the most self-centered by far. Sometimes she really just doesn't care about other people.

She gets a kick out of screwing other people over, even innocent people, though she was much worse about it when she was younger. Nowadays she might steal the last candy bar someone wanted from the vending machine; younger Rouge might have slashed tires for fun.

Manipulative even to those who have earned her respect. Almost like a sort of game she plays with them, if said person knows her tricks.

Guarded and distant. An expert at sorting out other people's emotions while not showing any herself.

She thinks she has perfect control over her emotions but she doesn't.

Can and will talk her way out of being responsible for said thing she's responsible for. Can and will gaslight anyone except Shadow about this. It wasn't her turn to do the dishes! Omega, how could you say such a thing!

(She only stopped gaslighting Shadow because of. y'know. but at the same time Rouge can and has invoked Maria to persuade Shadow to do something.)

Omega:

The most overtly flawed of the trio. Loud, single-minded, rude, reckless etc etc etc etc. . .

Readily disparages anyone who doesn't immediately meet his high standards for worth.

(Oddly enough, said standards are the same standards he holds himself to. Which is a problem for all the non-robots/non-ultimate lifeforms in his vicinity.)

Unpredictable which rules he'll decide to humor today vs tomorrow. Applies to social norms as well as government laws.

Really he just fucking hates being told what to do, even if it's something benign. Never ask this guy for a favor, he will say no.

Completely callous of (most) people's feelings. Greatly indifferent towards the suffering of others unless he's directly confronted with a sad-looking face.

Jaded and pessimistic (but not shy!) about interacting most people until he knows them well.

This motherfucker has to be right about everything and won't let an argument go. Having flawless memory does not help with this.

Forgot to post this for the Sonic Pride Week by @sonicpridecorner!!!

This was my only entry, and it was for Day 2 - Inspired!

Marlene decided to dye a shirt inspired by her favorite nonbinary robot! Nobody told me that drawing novice fanart for your own fic could be so much fun. Characters are from my fic Complex Inquiries! Author's (Artist's?) note below:

Metal Sonic is very strongly nonbinary in that fic. It uses it/its pronouns not to dehumanize itself, but to give itself a distinct identity that for once feels like its own instead of the obvious comparison drawn by the use of he/him. Its relationship to its gender is its relationship to the rest of the world around it; built through sheer determination, fighting against what it knows it "should" do every step of the way. Forging its own path into the future, one where it controls its own actions, and it controls its own body. (Hence the new paintjob, which it spends a good third of the fic trying to get!)

(No one will ever believe me but I came up with its design before realizing I'd chosen the colors of the nonbinary flag. Happy accident!)

I myself am cis, but building my gender identity with my own two hands (metaphorically) is a big part of who I am today. I never had a strong sense of gender until I made one- and that feeling is liberating. It's something you own that can never be taken away. Even before Neo is freed from its own restrictive code in this fic, it still uses its preferred pronouns for itself despite others gendering it differently. It always had this sort of sense of itself, but couldn't really explore that until it learned more about how to be a person and was in a safe enough place to do so.
