Li Shiu Tong* (李兆堂) and Magnus Hirschfeld in exile in Nice, France (1934 or 1935), where Hirschfeld died May 14, 1935. Both met in 1931 on Hirschfeld’s lecture tour (North America & Asia) in Shanghai where Li was studying medicine. Li quickly became Hirschfeld’s interpreter and travel companion, and eventually student and lover. Read more about Li’s and Hirschfeld’s interesting story here.
*Li was nicknamed “Tao Li”/“Taoli”. The Cantonese “Li Shiu Tong” (Li’s family was from Hong Kong) translates into the standard Chinese “Li Zhaotang” (“Li” being the surname).
