Do you know the correct way to refer to someone who has Autism vs someone who doesn’t? Don’t feel bad... Most people don’t. Today is World Autism Awareness Day... Since I became the (somewhat unwilling, but none the less dedicated) “Autism Advocate Mom” this year, you can expect that I will be sharing a lot of information about Autism this month. I am doing this because FEAR is only a by product of ignorance : People are only afraid of things they don’t understand, & educating people about Autism has also become an absolute passion of mine now. So, this month, My goal is to share the things that are “normal” in our lives. I hope that it will help others to not see these things as being so “abnormal” in the future. ***So- let’s start with the correct way to refer to someone with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder): - A person *WITHOUT* ASD would be considered “Neurotypical”. - Therefore a person *WITH* ASD would be referred to as “NON-NEUROTYPICAL”. - *** This just means that their brains function AND process information very differently than “typical “ peers. Saying things like “normal” or “not normal” is usually the most comfortable and common mistake in referencing a person on the Autism Spectrum (A mistake we have found medical professionals and educators even make REGULARLY, which I have a major problem with in this day and age. I admit, I had to look this up when we first started this journey, but the more we go down this road, the more we see that there is a HUGE problem with the lack of education on ASD in both the educator and medical communities.) Remember, “Normal” is a very relative term. An ASD family’s idea of “normal” just doesn’t look like a typical family’s “normal”, but it is our “normal” just the same... So, let’s kick off world ASD DAY , by remembering these people may not be “neurotypical”, which means they may do things differently... but these people are still beautiful, interesting, intelligent, and completely NORMAL. ❤️ Please share this information if you want to help raise true Autism Awareness and keep “Lighting the world BLUE for Autism Awareness Month!
