Gamora’s stunned at this change in demeanor, but not at all upset. She smiles softly at him and grabs his hand, ignoring the jaw-dropping stares from the rest of the team as the two of them go off on their own once more.

She’s dragging him towards a diner they had visited a few nights before, in the mood for food and good company. She can’t find it in herself to let go of his hand.

“Did you really think that I don’t love you?”

Peter shakes his head, “No, it’s not that. I just... know you like to keep yourself closed off sometimes. So maybe... maybe you were regretful of what you did last night.”

Peter sits down at the diner, stirring his coffee as he speaks. He loves... more than he has the words to express. She means so much to him and he was scared, more scared than he’s felt since he lost his mother. If what they had was just something she’d only felt in a drunken moment of passion he wouldn’t know how to feel.

“I’m... really in love with you.”

Peter nods, flashing her a confident smirk before his helmet dematerializes. He’s worreid about her, maybe a part of him always is. The Guardians were criminals, but on Knowhere they would be dealing with the lowest of the low, and anybody could be there. Whoever had an offer for them, Peter knew they couldn’t be trusted. 

“See? I’m telling you, we need to get some kind of hotline for people who wanna hire us. Tired of dealing with this shady meetings shit,” Peter says, laughing to himself. 

Partly to assure her, but far more for his own sake, Peter lets his hand trail over Gamora’s. It’s difficult to determine precisely where their unspoken thing begins and where it ends, but he hopes she won’t mind at least a little bit of holding hands.

i’m not sure we talk enough in this fandom about how we see gamora repeatedly try to understand peter’s earth references and engage with him on that level, despite the fact that they make absolutely zero sense to her. she does this, even, when she barely knows him: when she tries to follow along with his mangled retelling of footloose, asking, “who put the sticks up their butts?”, and when she remembers this, later, to eagerly tell him, “we’re just like kevin bacon!” of course, not to mention, zardu hasselfrau in vol 2, and so on and so forth.

here’s the thing– gamora knows what it’s like to be cut off from your home, to feel like no one else understands certain things or experiences, and she understands how important it is to hold onto what you have. peter, though, has a lot more from his home that he still carries with him than gamora does of hers, so, recognizing that his earth stuff is important to him because she’d feel the same if she had literally anything of zen-whoberi left, she makes a real effort to understand, and to even try to use some of his references back at him. she’s… she’s really trying.

it’s an incredibly sweet gesture, and it further highlights that deep level of kinship, courtesy of bizarrely similar backstories in a lot of ways, that they understand each other on.

which brings me to the concept of the “unspoken thing” in vol 2. it’s another one of peter’s earth things that’s foreign to gamora, and certainly the way in which he explains it to her isn’t any help; he uses cheers and tv ratings metaphors, and when he does, he just spirals down a hole of incoherence (as peter is wont to do when he’s trying to talk about a deep and honest feeling that’s scary) and makes the whole thing worse. gamora, understandably, becomes more and more frustrated as the conversation goes on, largely because peter won’t fucking explain himself in a way that actually makes sense, and is skirting around being real in any way, to the point that it culminates in her exploding, “I DON’T KNOW WHAT CHEERS IS!”

but when gamora comes to acknowledge her feelings, and to admit them to peter, she uses his words back at him to do so, just like she did with kevin bacon, zardu hasselfrau, and everything else. it’s, again, that gesture, and it’s something that’s both really sweet and deeply meaningful. i have a lot of feelings about that.
