“Coming from the underground metal scene, obviously Elizabeth Báthory is someone you bumped into via Bathory or Tormentor. I’ve always been fascinated with Dracula and Elizabeth Báthory. If cover songs are meant to reflect on the Papa that covers it, do you have any ideas as to what Crucified could mean for Papa II?

There used to be this Swedish radio show called Pop och politik that focused on how pop music, particularly Swedish, reflects contemporary history - very cool and insightful actually. I remember in one episode they talked about Crucified with Alexander Bard, the guy who wrote the song. According to him it was heavily influenced by the ongoing HIV/AIDS epidemic and society's treatment of people suffering from the disease, in particular those in the gay community. It basically reflects how the society condemns - ‘crucifies’ - them for the lifestyle they supposedly led. Back in the day there existed the pervasive stereotype that LGBTQ people wilfully choose a party-fuelled, hedonistic way of life which reinforced the idea that they “deserved” the disease because of their supposed deviance. The song thus essentially likens them to Jesus suffering on the cross for sins he did not commit.

Take that as you will in regards to Papa II. I think all of his covers have a thread of sadness and grief weaved through them, which interestingly stands in contrast to how he was portrayed on the surface during his era. In Papaganda for example we get a picture of him as this sort of hedonist and libertine, but then on another occasion TF described him like this - “He’s terribly masculine. And a romantic soul. But also pitiful. He’s just a sad old man.” And I think his covers do reflect that juxtaposition.

But I wanted you to see how it works. The resist makes little walls and you put the watery paint in there. If all goes right you get perfect little paint bucketed areas.

The front is done and I'm waiting several hours before starting the back. I NEED to have those resist lines dried or it's all going to be a big blob.
