Amadeus - loved by God; love of God

This was one of my final projects for Kat Lam’s illustration class! I’ve wanted to create a poster for Amadeus for a while now, but through the class I think I was able to push the concept a lot further.

I wanted to capture the conflict Salieri feels possessing mortal approval, when really he desires immortal approval in the form of Mozart’s “god-given” talent.

It was really fun finding references for his hand gestures (I wanted to give him a baton, but apparently they weren’t used in conducting until the early 1800's) and for the theater! It's a real theater in Prague that's been operating since 1783 (and maybe I spotted it again in S2 of IWTV?)

Laura and Audrey at the homecoming dance for @ghostliteal as part of @countdowntotwinpeaks wonderfulxstrange exchange. I hope you enjoy! It was so much fun to work on. 

I did paint a different dress for Laura but thought this pink 50’s inspired prom dress would be more fun than the white one shown in her homecoming queen photo. I wanted to paint a little slice of life moment for my recipient and was intrigued by Laura and Audrey as one of their requests - it was interesting thinking of a situation where they might be hanging out together (besides the ski trip) since they weren't really friends canonically. I thought homecoming seemed like a perfect kind of setting where someone might take a random/somewhat awkward snapshot of them hanging out for a moment. 

I got to thinking about the parallels between these two characters more as I was painting them, the fact that they're similarly complex and misunderstood based on the image they seemingly project to the world around them. Also the idea of them in these pretty dresses and appearing superficially happy/perfect while in reality each grapples with a terrible darkness - kind of like the town of Twin Peaks itself. This was such a fun request to think more deeply about! 

(sadly my scanner completely flattened the metallic gold stars so here's a video to show the effect. The backdrop was inspired by the Stardust Room in a long defunct Catskill resort called the Nevele, which I also included here from a postcard I own).
