Starscream was ruined in Earthspark S2

Throughout Starscreams existence, he has been subject to Megatrons abuse. Physical, mental, emotional, verbal. Of course, Starscream being the character he is, it is often used for comedy. Earthspark used this and actually took it seriously, which isn't something I've seen before. They made Starscream realistic to those who have gone through those things. But only in season 1.

In the first season, Starscream had a dedicated episode which actually had a very good reception!!! I'll give a basic rundown.

Starscream, along with Skywarp and Nova Storm are trying to escape the G.H.O.S.T. building and their cells through underground tunnels. Agent Croft isn't really taking it seriously but Megatron (who is now reformed) says this is a REAL threat, and that they should take this seriously. Optimus trusts in him to go underground and try to find them and put them back WITHOUT violence.

Meanwhile, the Maltos are looking for the cave which the Terrans were born. Something happens idk and they end up in the same tunnel system as the seekers. They reluctantly help each other due to a giant monster called the dweller chasing after them. Starscream, at first, is distrusting and mean. But later warms up to Hashtag, one of the Terrans. This happens when everyone else splits up to find a way out of the tunnels and are in a room with a (convenient) map. Starscream is forcing Hashtag around until she snaps and confronts him about it. Starscream opens up and tells her about the abuse Megatron put him through in the past. Hashtag believes him and tries to calm him down. She believes what he has to say. She doesn't make any excuses towards him, and she doesn't belittle his experiences.

This changes something in Starscream, he finally has someone who's there for him to help him get through the shit he's been through. He finally has someone who believes him.

Later on, Megatron ends up finding both Hashtag and Starscream. But he immediately starts fighting Starscream despite Optimus telling him to do it without violence. Hashtag stops the fight, seeing for herself what Starscream told her was true. She always believed him, but now she visually sees it's evident that Starscream has a horrible fear of Megatron because of his past. Megatron gets injured by the dweller, and Hashtag chases after it, getting taken by it in the process. Starscream runs over to save her and Megatron sees that Starscream has changed.

The dweller takes them both, and Starscream sacrifices himself to be able to save her, something he would have NEVER ever done. He puts himself in active danger to protect a child! The child who listened and believed him. Normally, Starscream would be the one putting the other in danger, tripping their legs into it to make sure he lives. Starscream is known to be selfish like that. But he does the exact opposite here because of how Hashtag treated him.

When everyone escapes the tunnels, Megatron let's Starscream and the seekers escape instead of bringing them back to G.H.O.S.T. He apologizes and insists it's safe now. Starscream disagrees with him and tells him "Nowhere is safe if it's with you."

He then goes to leave with Skywarp and Nova Storm before turning to tell Hashtag to take care of herself.

We don't see Starscream again until the season finale. Word went around that the Maltos saved the Decepticons and that the world was ending, so he came to genuinely help save everyone (and also to get some payback and fight Megatron, who was currently brainwashed.) He doesn't turn the tables to make the situation support him, and he doesn't betray or backstab anyone. He simply helps.

Then we lead onto the second season, right after Starscream helps everyone, he's immediately back to his old ways. Scheming against the main characters and being evil. Of course I love an evil Starscream, he's a Decepticon after all. But after all of his development it feels like his whole arc turned around and just dissipated. The Maltos are looking for the remnants of a crystal with important powers. The Decepticons are also trying to get their hands on it. Let it be known that G.H.O.S.T. isn't an active company anymore due to being a shady business. The two villains from the first season are dead, and it's not like they can't make a new villain. In fact, they do! So choosing one of the two reformed characters to be the new main villain feels so strange.

If you haven't caught on yet, Starscream has PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder). A mental health condition caused by traumatic events. He has flashbacks of his trauma, he avoids Megatron altogether, physical reactions such as completely fleeing and hiding, as well as negative thoughts and anxiety. He shows the symptoms. He never gets "over it" in his episode, but he learns that talking about it helps. He learns that he doesn't have to go through things alone. He has Skywarp and Nova Storm. He even has Hashtag.

It makes zero, absolutely ZERO sense to make specifically Starscream the new villain! Later on in season 2, Hashtag even asks him why he's doing this, quoting the words he said to her. "Take care of yourself." He says that he's doing just that, taking care of himself by finding the pieces of this crystal for power. The show twists his heartwarming words to his friend into something more sinister, which I think is pretty messed up.

At the end of season 2, Starscream gets trapped inside Terratronus, a titan that helped the main characters. Into season 3, the only scenes we get of Starscream is him staring out at everyone. This is used to be sort of menacing. Looking down at the people who trapped him there. But later we find out he was sad about being in there, he bangs on Terratronus' eye to be released. I mean, he was all alone. Nobody was in there with him. His entire support system was gone. The Decepticons left and took the Arc (Autobots main spaceship) to try and go back to Cybertron.

Later on, the main characters go back to Terratronus who is currently stuck in stasis to wake her up to once again ask her to help them. When they go inside her head Starscream is there by himself, he gets startled and begs the characters not to leave him, to take him with them. The main characters who need all hands on deck due to a quintesson invasion... shock Starscream with a staff and put him to sleep. Disregarding him and his desperate loneliness. This scene is used for comedic relief, Starscreams begging is used as a punchline. "Look how desperate he is to have a connection after being trapped inside this lady!"

It makes me upset. The series ends and that's the last we see of Starscream.

What makes this even more confusing is that Earthspark is a show deeply rooted in family, friendship, love, acceptance, and growth. They had a beautiful redemption for Starscream until they screwed him over. I have two theories to why they did him dirty like this...

1. The change of studios. If you noticed the animation quality dip while watching you weren't the only one. Nickelodeon changed animation studios to save money while working on the show. I think maybe when they changed studios something happened with the scripts, they may not have had seen what the first studio did with Starscreams character, and written him to be evil. Though this theory is flimsy knowing Hashtag quotes what Starscream said to her in season 1.

2. They didn't want to develop a new "proper" villain. The villains introduced in season 2 and 3 are quite minor. So even if they just introduced them, they didn't have to flesh them out fully like they did with Mandroid and Agent Croft. This theory is backed up seeing the difference in episodes for the different seasons, season 1 having about 20 episodes with season 2 and 3 having less than 10 each.

It really is dissapointing how they ruined what Starscream could've been. But what do you guys think? I'd love to hear what people think about this too.
