Akari ‘Buki’ Kotobuki, SHSL Tea Specialist

3 down, considerably more than 3 to go! Oh well. I thought I’d get some of the harder ones out of the way but Buki was easier than I thought she’d be.

I guess it’s not too weird; she mainly just wears a one-piece dress with some heavy embellishments. It’s probably the hat that proves the most pesky… but regardless, here she is. She’s supposed to evoke a traditional and witchy ‘dark mage’ energy all at once, hence the geta  and odd hat. I started out with the hat and branched out but I always knew her colours would basically be white and black. Buki’s hair is pretty thick and her gloves are embroidered. I thought I’d have her charm change every chapter but that seemed like a pain since I’ve have to copy all her expressions over. So it’s just based on the omamori. She collects and distributes a lot of those by the way! Naturally.

It’s weird for me to call her Akari sometimes because the dislike and fear of her first name is so key to her. Which is pretty ironic, since her name uses the kanji of light. Because her first name is pretty integral to her character, I had to find a last name that would provide a proxy ‘first name’. I actually decided on Kotobuki and Buki very quickly. It helps that I love Ran Kotobuki!

Buki’s a character with a lot of idiosyncrasies. I wanted her to evoke a lot of curiosity, saying half-things about the situation and herself but never painting a full picture. You get snippets of what Panayomogi -sama is and what it means to her but it’s still hard to get into her head. It’s fun to play with. She’s very emotional and very mysterious!

You Seiyama, SHSL Hiker

It’s been a while since I did some references but now that I can’t update as much I figured it’d be a good time to start doing them again.

So! Onto You. Not sure why I picked him next but it is what it is; kinda doing these in a random order. You’s outfit is surprisingly uncomplicated; he wears a student-like top half with a proper shirt and tie whereas the bottome half is more adventure-y with sturdy boots and shorts. And then his poncho covers a lot of his top half. The poncho’s definitely supposed to help evoke that fairy image You’s character is centered around. He wears both a ring and an earring; he’s not the sort of person who cares about things being feminine and whatnot, just wears what he wants.Other than the patterns, You is pretty simple to draw! His hair is interesting, there are two thick strands and the rest is quite thin. It’s an interesting style. I wanted him to be tidy and clean but with an airy flair.

A lot of the inspiration for You actually just came from his name, since it’s a bit of a pun. The idea of a hiker who didn’t get their talent because they love hiking per se, more just because they love the idea of chasing legends and traveling was a fun one. You’s name throws me for a loop sometimes because of how it’s spelled, haha. I like having Seiyama as the surname because it has mountain in it, too.

You’s also an interesting character. He’s very gentle and soft but I feel you never quite know what hes thinking. He’s one of the younger characters, so it gives him a unique perspective and niche.

Dangan Ronpa: String Along, is a fanstory based on the concept of Spike Chunsoft’s game Dangan Ronpa. This will be presented like a playthrough as if it were a game through the eyes of our main character, Chika Nonaka, a simple florist.
