David Thewlis and Gary Oldman in making of HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN (2004)
David Thewlis and Gary Oldmanâs friendship throughout the years:
âŠ
Q. What had you heard about Harry Potter before you actually got involved in it?
David Thewlis: âIâd only read a bit of the first book. And I knew about all the media furor over it. But Iâd not read books 2 or 3. Iâd just read a bit of it. And Iâd seen the films.â
Gary Oldman: âMuch the same, really. I had read the first book and Iâve got one up on Dave, you see! Iâd finished the first book! (laughs)â
David Thewlis: âNo pictures in itâŠâ
Gary Oldman: âThere were no pictures in it! (laughs)â
Q. What do you think each otherâs animagus form would be?
Gary Oldman: âI think thereâs a real softness to David. Like a deer or something. I could see him as a deer.â
David Thewlis: ââŠIâd say some kind of bird.â
Interviewer: âA woman?â
(both laughed)
David Thewlis: âSome kind of bird! (laughs)â
Gary Oldman: âYour teaâs on the table, darling! (in old womanâs voice)â
âŠ
on another interview several years later:
David Thewlis: âGary actually came around the next morning, because we lived near each other at the time, and he said, âHave you seen the new book? Weâve got a lot of work to do, mate!â He was quite happy, and I didnât know how to break it to him. So I said, 'Have you actually read it yet, Gaz?â 'No, just clicked through it.â A few days later, Iâm in makeup and he comes in, and sits down, and goes 'Have you heard the news?â 'Whatâs that, Gaz?â 'Itâs terrible fucking news.â 'What is it?â 'You know how everyone is talking about who dies in book five? ITâS FUCKING ME! This woman puts the poor bastard in prison for 12 years, brings him back for a few scenes, and then she kills him!ââ
âŠ
again, on another interview:
Interviewer:Â "I liked seeing you and David Thewlis together in Harry Potter. Heâs another actor you donât expect to be a good guy.â
Gary Oldman:Â "Heâs an old friend of mine! You had all the old thespians together (in Harry Potter) - Alan Rickman and Tim Spall and David Thewlis, and weâve all known one another. Yes, I said 'thespian.ââ
