https://archiveofourown.org/works/66778525
BW D7 - Freeform
If you enjoy this, I have other writings for this challenge. And check out the other lovely lovely works that many talented people have done at @boromir-week
Characters: Boromir, the rest of the Fellowship is mentioned
CW: semi-graphic descriptions of a gutted fish, and general unpleasantness of having a concussion, and an emotional breakdown
Ch 1 - Growing Pains (and the pain of a concussion)
Boromir’s ears ring, even in the quiet of the forest. Every little rustle and scrape of the leafs or the weapons of woodland elves, the rays of the setting sun, or even whispers from anyone who speaks, pierces through his head, worsening the sharp pulsing in his back. He fights back a whimper and tries not to sway. He tells himself that he has suffered worse injuries, that he will survive. On the bright side, having no wings means that they didn't get broken when he had been thrown into the wall by the cave troll.
When Boromir senses that Aragorn’s negotiations with the Elven patrol leader show no signs of wrapping up, he sits down gingerly against a tree and closes his eyes to help fight back the lingering nausea. It had gotten much worse over the past day, and by now even the idea of eating makes his stomach roil.
Someone sits beside him — either Frodo or Sam, he thinks through drying syrup, since Merry and Pippin are talking with Gimli and Legolas — but neither of them speak. The quiet is comforting, and Boromir has no desire to break the spell. His eyelids droop but he forces them open. He can not sleep, not yet, not when they are still in danger.
His hands still shake even though he clutches his legs.
He closes his eyes, and opens them to Pippin shaking him awake.
"They've let us in, Boromir," Pippin says quietly, yet still too harshly for Boromir's liking.
Boromir grunts an acknowledgement, ignoring the darkness invading his view from standing up far too quickly. He's fine. He's fine. He's fine...
They walk for only a few minutes, yet each step is a test of balance that lasts for hours.
Lothlórien makes his skin crawl, but the mere presence of Lady Galadriel makes him feel like a gutted fish flopping about on a dock in Dol Amroth, organs and blood spilling out as she digs through his memories and focuses on the visceral and vivid memories of deaths and sick men and finally his home. Smoking, crumbled, ruined...
Gone.
There is still hope.
Hope...
Boromir's breathing quickens and something wet drips down his face.
There is no hope. His city is gone, dead. He is dead with it.
Muffled voices fade in from around him, calling his name, but a single touch on his shoulder has him flinch and break.
He gasps, falling to his knees. Mourning cries escape him and he does not care that he is weak. He is dead because his city and country are dead. Clicks and chirps fall out of his mouth as he keens, sobbing as he is too exhausted to care about propriety. Arms wrap around him and his skin wants to rip apart, but they won't let go even as he struggles weakly.
Someone carries him through the trees, quietly whistling and chirping back at him, soothing him into the darkness of sleep, wherein he will dream of times long gone.

Boromir Week, Day 7: Freeform
You know what? Screw it. Boromir and Aragorn as tired dirtbag summer camp counselors in 1978

Obligatory DIY ear piercing. Arwen joins in. It gets infected.

An ode to the nights I spent sleeping on a cabin roof with my fellow counselors in the backcountry of New Mexico in the aughts. Boromir's shirt says "I Survived Amon Hen," it's from Capture the Flag

Perhaps they ought not to have eaten the dragon. There had been people objecting to it at the time. Surely such meat was poisonous. Perhaps it was even an affront, an insult to some intangible order of nature they ought to honour.
But the city was starving, the siege had gone on too long, and the king's troops were still a week's march away. The scorched earth would be fertile again in time, but right now it was barren. Right now there were mouths to feed. So they changed their crossbows for butcher knives and got to work.
None of the royal commanders asked any questions that could not be answered. After all, their aid had come shamefully late. The dragon's horned skull made a noble gift, a fitting tribute from a triumphant city to its humbled king. Who would have thought to question them?
And none of the townsfolk spoke up, when the first golden-eyed babes were born. Children who grew up barefoot and fearless, clambering over the city's patched and rebuilt roofs like they had no notion of falling, with a strange glitter to their skin when the sunlight hit it just so. No one breathed a word about dragons.
Because soon enough there were deft, young hands taking loaves straight out of the oven, heedlessly lifting iron from the forge, plunging into boiling laundry water. And some of them more wondrous still, wild, warm-skinned youths, with inexplicable knowledge and peculiar remedies.
A blessing, their families said proudly. A blessing after so much hardship. Which it was, in its way. This city would never fear dragon fire again.

fun behaviors to give dragons that aren't feline/canine based
cause as much as i love dragons purring and roaring i wish there was just more variety in how they would act
clacking their teeth together to show contentedness/happiness (budgies)
using tails as a defensive weapon in a whip like fashion (iguana)
twitching to express that they're not a threat to members of their species (hognose snake)
feeling calm when eyes are hooded/covered (birds of prey)
head bobbing as a threat display (anoles/bearded dragons)
flattening neck or sides to appear bigger (snakes/lizards)
mantling over food to protect it from hatchmates (birds of prey)
wiggling neck as a courting maneuver (budgies)
audibly grinding teeth as a warning (macaques)
maintained eye contact as a challenge (gorillas)
pounding wings against sides as a threat (gorillas)
slapping other dragons with their claws when their personal bubble is invaded (seals)
hoards used as a site to impress mates (birds of paradise)
snorting when undergoing heightened stress (horses)
making repeated loud noises with surroundings to establish territory (woodpeckers)
loud constant arguments with other dragons when roosting (bats)
building lairs that cause a domino effect of change in the land around them (beavers)
slapping their tails against the ground/water as a warning (beavers)
wiggling tail tip to attract prey (various animals)
wiggling tail tip as a warning (snakes)
plucking or scraping off scales as a sign of stress (parrots)
raising spines/frills as a response to danger and carrying on with their usual business as they believe they're protected (lionfish)
and im not saying canine and feline behaviors are wrong or bad to give a dragon (people wouldn't write dragons with those behaviors if they weren't fun in the first place!) but i feel for creatures that are mythological giant winged lizards that you can do more and get experimental with it. often the more unfamiliar behavior the more dragony the dragon feels

Boromir Week Day 3: Son of Denethor, Paternal Family, Thorongil
Here is what we know: When Denethor was a young man, Aragorn served as a captain in Gondor under the name Thorongil. He was so skilled and wise that he soon became invaluable to Steward Ecthelion, which made Denethor jealous.

So here's today's headcanon: Ecthelion wants to keep Thorongil close while Denethor is constantly trying to edge him out, which means Aragorn is just constantly around. And Finduilas, as we know, is very, very lonely. She's alone in a world of grim, older military men, she dreads being so close to Mordor, and her husband has no emotional fluency. So when Thorongil speaks kindly to her and holds genuine conversations with her, it's one of the only friendly anchors she has. She sees him as closer to her in age--though he's not--and feels like he actually values her for more than just being a quiet, dutiful wife--because he does. He's there throughout her first pregnancy and when she goes into labor with Boromir.

Meanwhile, Denethor's attention has been on being valuable to his father. He's been hoping and praying this baby will be a son, because he thinks it will be what he finally needs to wrest Ecthelion's favor away from Thorongil and back to himself.

But while Ecthelion adores his grandson, he still relies on Thorongil's skills and leadership, and Denethor only grows more jealous. Recognizing this, and perhaps also recognizing that he's become a wedge between Finduilas and Denethor, Aragorn surprises everyone by making that abrupt decision not to return to Minas Tirith after the battle of the Corsairs.

TO BE CLEAR, I don't hc that Boromir and Faramir's parentage is anything other than what's laid out in canon. I'm just saying THERE'S A LOT OF MATERIAL TO WORK WITH HERE.
