A Backflow preventer. Installed on your sewer MAIN DRAIN LINE. Usually for instance like in the front yard on the SEWER MAIN before it goes out to the street. This Will stop anything from coming back into the house.

Basically it has a flapper inside, looks like a coupling with a flapper inside. Which in some cases certain houses get flooded out often. And this prevents this from occurring. 

The work should be done by a professional. 

There are actually several types of water backflow preventers that can be used on a house, for instance, a backflow preventer on a hose bibb. (Or where you connect the water hose outside in the yard.) 

So nothing goes back into the house and does not contaminate the Water Supply. Or Backflow preventers on your irrigation…

When you see out in the yard PVC piping or sticking out of the ground with valves. Those are backflow preventers. 

They will usually be a minimum of 12" inches above the ground. This is for the PREVENTION, of Contamination of the Potable water source.

Depends on the circumstance, for instance.

If it’s a bathroom sink or shower, or the main drain line.

Handheld snake Metal canister type. Not a real cheap one. 

At the Home Depot, they sell a Plastic Hair Snake Brass craft around 2.50 or The Zip-it for around 12.00 The both good zip it is a little better.

A Power machine Like the one they have at the Home Depot for 169.00. Or Rent one in their tool rentals.

If it’s a toilet obviously a toilet plunger (preferably one with rubber cup at the end. Or a Toilet Auger.

If it’s a Kitchen Drain use a 3/8″ cable on a power machine. Or a 1/2 cable which you can also rent at the Home Depot.

This next one you really have to know what you're doing because otherwise, you can flood the house, somewhere. It’s called a blow bag, you attach this to a water hose and insert down the drain for instance like a kitchen drain. But, like I said you really have to be careful that water doesn’t come out somewhere else like in the bathroom and cause a flood.

If it’s a Main Line use a 5/8, 100′ cable they rent those at the Home Depot. Make sure if you have had roots before to get a tip with a blade on the end. So it will cut out the roots.

Contrary to popular belief most Liquid cleaners are a waste of money. Drain cleaners are at best a temporary fix. Because it will not dissolve completely the stoppage well on rare occasions it may. But it also has strong chemicals that can wear out the plumbing. Like the rubber connections underneath a sink, or if it is acid, for roots. Like a Root Killer, it can definitely wear out even “Cast Iron Piping.”

And I always Recommend to let a professional do the work.

I have truly felt blessed (for being a plumber began my Trek back in 83′). Well most of the time for there where moments when I would cry. Yes, because when your digging ditches or crawling underneath a house. Dragging yourself for a little above minimum wage. Can sometimes be bothersome to say the least.

But I am very Grateful. That I stayed with it. Well that’s what happen when I started out as a plumber working with Jack. And as a Handyman with Mr. Mata. In the early 80s.

I also worked for 2 years. as an electrician, carpenter or handyman with a Master general Contractor. Mr. Mata. But I always stayed in plumbing. I guess I was just trying to find out how it was to be electrician or carpenter.

But Being a Plumber. given those first few years. I would have to say it’s like getting paid everyday. That is the good thing about doing repair plumbing. And your never do the same thing over and over unless you work in new construction plumbing. And Your Almost Al;ways in A different area and different situation on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, I would also have to say unless you become like a big plumbing business will you truly become wealthy. But it’s OK I like working with my hands. And meeting people everyday and being out in the field instead of inside a building. And fixing things I guess if nothing else that is very satisfying.
