what's your thoughts on kaji and his relationship to his dead best friend?

I'm not entirely sure who you're referring to. Kyoya is the only character I can recall ever being labeled as his "best friend". And while he does die, it's not until the game's timeline lines up with the events of EoE. Which is after Kaji's death.

There's also that group of kids from his manga backstory. But there really isn't enough shown to speculate on.

Going off of Kyoya, I do think they share a really strong bond. Both of them feel comfortable being vulnerable around the other. Kaji even invites Kyoya to his watermelon patch. Which he's been shown to keep secret from anyone else (except for Shinji, but even then, he shows it to Kyoya first.)

He clearly cares a lot for Kyoya and even states at one point that he could never forget the day they met (though it never goes further than that and we're never told how they met). Kyoya is clearly someone he values a lot. And he's one of the few people he actually trusts.
