Updates from The Global Sunrise AGM!
Following our AGM on Saturday, which allowed us to celebrate the year's successes and plan for next year's challenges. We thought this would be a good time to share with you the progress made and plans for the future.
Our partnership with African Steps is ongoing:-
After research was conducted, advice from a PHD project collected and reports published on best way to meet the energy needs of the community, the work got underway.
The first phase, which is should be complete by the end of the month, was to place solar panels on the main building of St Peter's Hospital on Likoma Island, giving 24-hour power to the hospital.
The second phase to be completed focuses on the community's power needs. In 2015 relevant work will be undertaken to provide a Community Charging Station. This would allow people to charge lanterns and take them home, or into their fishing boats.
Our new partnership with TASC Madagascar begin:-
TASC is a charity that focuses on rural Madagascar, where towns of people suffering with leprosy need help. They are left in appaling conditions and stigmatised by the wider community. There is a need to relieve poverty and sickness as well as a better education for many.
The aim is to help through empowerment of the community. TASC has built hospitals, mental health clinics, housing and schools (with aims to build more) that betters the sanitary conditions and outlook for the community. The aim is to help through empowerment of the community- there are initiatives to start reforestation cyclically for the harvesting of timber, and helping to begin a cycle of crops which the village now control independently, as is the aim of such initaitives.
The new partnership with Global Sunrise is open. Research needs to be done as how to best service the community. It is possible for solar panels to be added to the current buildings (new buildings planned will be built with solar panels), or work could be done on how to work a pump and tank for water to go to the crops without the use of electric.
We hope that the years to come will be as successful as this past year, and we hope that you will come out to support us in our ongoing and new partnerships.

Interesting Research Opportunities
We have now starting offering people a chance to carry out research projects to support our ongoing work. Whether its policy, or technology, or physical environment, we are keen to build up a wider knowledge base around the projects we undertake.
From this, we are proud to share our first research paper, produced by Sophie Long at University of Birmingham. Following our involvement on Likoma Island, Sophie looked into a key national policy, BARREM, which aimed to reduce the barriers for implementation of renewable energy in Malawi. Interested? Click here for the full paper.
If you would be interested in carrying out your own research, then we would love to hear from you! Just get in touch with Roz Thomas at [email protected].

A New Partnership Begins!
Global Sunrise is happy to announce a new partnership with TASC Madagascar!
TASC Madagascar aims to reduce poverty and ill health in the Vohipeno region of Madagascar, through focusing on the root causes of poverty and integrating education, sanitation, and general self-sufficiency. To see their aims in more detail, please visit their website.
Global Sunrise are working to provide the Children's home, the Foyer des handicapés, the dormitories, and the offices, enabling the use of computers, with solar power, in Tanjomoha, Madagascar. This will substantially improve the quality of care given at the clinics and improve the standard of living for the children, patients and staff. We are very excited to get this project underway and will keep you updated on our progress.
We are very excited about furthering the cause of this charity, and investing in the future of those in the Vohipeno region.

Our Cake Sale outside the University library on Thursday 20th March was definitely a success! In fact, we did so well, we sold out of cake in the penultimate hour- a big thank you to all who made cake, manned the stall, spread awareness of our charity and bought cake! We managed to raise £105.54, so definitely worth celebrating.
