I have finally drawn some AriYui ship art, and honestly I feel like I've been getting better at drawing ship art? Like, everytime I've tried in the past I would end up hating it but this plus my previous ZanHisa ship art is restoring my confidence a little (seriously, we DO NOT talk about my old ugly Zankeik fanart I did like, two years ago everytime I look at it my eyes burn and a year is taken off my life like, WHY DID I DRAW ZANMU LIKE THAT-)
Artist's Notes;
So I should probably talk about some of the liberties I've taken with Ariya and Yuiman's designs. I didn't have to do too much to Yuiman other than adjust the colours so it fits in with the palette better but I changed a lot with Ariya's design.
So I just wanna get this out of the way, her design in Touhou 20 isn't really my favourite design in Touhou. Like, why does she not have any shoes? Why no shoes? I see why everyone else who doesn't have shoes in this game doesn't need shoes by why not give Ariya cool rock legs. Like, imagine that one leg on Utsuho, but two of them. I like the concept of the rock skirt but it just feels kinda clunky in excecution? I also wasn't able to get her flaming ribcage in the piece because of composition reasons, pretend it's back there but not really on fire, I drew her at an angle where her face and expression could be best seen and I didn't wanna sacrifice my posing for the sake of one wing. I also positioned the other shadow wing so that it looks like it's behind Ariya, it's not a literal wing so I imagine it more like a cape, and again I had to finnick with the designs for the sake of a cleaner composition and readable poses what else am I supposed to? Other than the entire bottom half of the design (or lack thereof) I really like her shirt and shadow wing. I love the use of yellowed bones on her design, it really does read like fossils emerging from rock. That's a motif I played around with when making my own iteration of her design. I did some work in my sketchbook first just to get a basis for it.

So my main goal of my own version of Ariya was to give her boots and improve the shape of the rock skirt since those were my main two grievances about the orignal design. I think I mainly just need to get used to it but her lack of footwear bothered me, so I wanted to lean into the idea of something emerging from a rock. Here I have the design of the boots I ended up doing for in the final draft but from an earlier stage in the digital art process. I'm actually pretty happy with how the design of her boots turned out a lot, I ended up adding some gold accents to the bottom, mainly just to spice them up and bring some of the gold from the top of the design to the bottom, and I like how the gradation from her boot to the rest of her leg looks. I've also seen a version of her design where the artist gave her little rock garters on her legs and I liked the idea of adding the rocks to her legs so I just used those rocks to top off the boots. I also added this little vertical diamond design pattern in multiple areas of my design for her, mainly because it was kinda reminiscent of a spin to me, though IDK if you can really see it lol.

I also wanted to change the ends of the sleeves into rock cuffs, mainly for the sake of tying in the rock patterns into other parts of the design. It was also in this first draft of the design that I also realized how much I liked Ariya with black gloves, it tied into what I wanted to do with the legs and I thought it brought the whole design together. Plus, it gave me Utena vibes and so I thought it would be perfect with her general vibes. I also initially tried to do those military sholder pad thingies but then I replaced it with something more bone-like since I couldn't really make it work anatomically. I've seen some fanart of her where her long white shirt is a jumpsuit of sorts but with shorter pang legs, and I really liked that alternative, because the rock skirt I drew only looks good from the front and kinda screws up the pose on any other angle so I went with it. But then, another problem came. How do I tie in the rocks at her waist? Like stone I chiseled away at this question for five minutes and then came to a brilliant conclusion,
"It is time for her to get Honkai Impacted the Third"
So I decided to orient the rocks so it kinda looks like mecha bits from a Honkai Impact design. At least that's the first thing I thought of when I had this idea. I really don't know how else to explain this detail, it's impractical but it just...felt right. I wanted to angle them kinda like wings since I'm imagining how this would look from the front. I also have some of extra little rock details on the bottom of the shoes, mainly for the sake of visual interest. The best thing about having a lineless style where you just paint everything on top is that you don't have to worry about lineart and making sure the colouring fits within the lineart, so if I were to hypothetically need to draw any of my Touhou fan designs for something like a comic I could easily draw on aaaallll the details I want because they become nothing more than a few brush strokes to me heheheheheheh~ I have a sketch of her face and the sketch that inspired this piece. My gut was telling me to give her thick eyebrows and I listened to my gut. I also gave her a little nose bump in her side profile because I like the strong shapes it gave her. Also made it easier to distinguish between her side profile and Yuiman's side profile because that's something I've struggled with in the past. I initally wanted to give her rock earrings but it ended up cluttering her face in the finished piece so I ended up cutting that. I also just decided to blank out her other eye under the mask because it looked cooler and more mysterious that way. I imagine that her face under the mask would be a bunch of rocks

Initially in the composition I wanted Ariya to have her tail wrapped around Yuiman's leg but when I tried to accomplish that in the finished piece it ended up not looking right, but hey, at least we have that idea in sketch form, and also yes Ariya would 100% lovingly wrap her fossil tail around Yuiman's body.
I don't have much to say for Yuiman other than I didn't give her pupils because she kinda reminds me of Fi from LoZ Skyward Sword in a way and I like the idea of her being kinda ethereal and distinctly not human.
