The Dark Side of Internet Trolls
Internet trolls are more than just people posting rude comments. They may engage in serious harassment, threats, and even criminal behavior. Some troll’s actions include bomb threats, rape threats, and doxxing, where they publish personal information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers and even bank account information. This can have serious consequences. It has caused people to leave social media for their safety and mental health. However, trolls are not always "bad" people. Many start trolling because they think it is amusing at someone else’s expense. But it can quickly get out of control. Trolls want attention and will do anything to get a reaction. For instance, an angry email to a publisher might go unanswered, but a post on social media on the journalist’s or publisher’s X account may get hundreds, if not thousands of views. The challenge is how to control trolling while not violating the First Amendment guaranteeing freedom of speech. While some forms of trolling are dangerous and should be addressed legally, others may not be harmful. Should trolling be banned or is this a form of censorship? As social media continues to grow, finding the balance between safety and freedom of expression is important.

"Internet trolls, by definition, are disruptive, combative and often unpleasant with their offensive or provocative online posts designed to disturb and upset."
Internet trolls are very disruptive when they pop up on our feeds, posts, videos, or tweets. How do we prevent this from happening?
