Ahem, I can't sleep so... Having some fun
The first thing I'll point out is that they are nameless. Angels other than archangels and higher-ranking angels don't have names. So he's just a nameless guardian or warrior.
(And i think that angels can't possess human body, so their appearance is what it is. They became what they most like to be. Or what people want to see them as in their "loyal to human" form)
Perhaps the last time he was among people when Byzantium was still standing strong. Inspired by his older brother Gabriel, he went down to fulfill his mission, to protect human child?
To accompany him through life and see his young death in battle. Never to be seen again because this child will sing in heaven and praise God forever.
The nameless warrior helped the emperor while his ward was alive. He was last seen in the Cretan Sea:
"And the angel washed his feet in the Cretan Sea, and said to the people: "Do not be anxious about tomorrow, people! The Father of all the faithful will save and comfort the afflicted." And the angel took a spear in his hands, and went into the sea, and disappeared in that sea.
And the people wept that the angel had left them, and rejoiced as soon as they heard of salvation."
