The video installation, CYOA Rhythms, has been included in the New Media Program of the 2014 Trinidad & Tobago Film Festival.
ABOUT TTFF
TTFF is currently the largest film Festival in the English Caribbean. It is 2-weeks in length, international in scope and showcases feature, narrative, documentary, short and experimental films from the English, French, Spanish, Dutch Caribbean and the region’s diaspora.
TTFF helps facilitate the growth of the Caribbean film industry through workshops, panel discussions, conferences and networking events. In 2013, TTFF co-hosted a 3-day UNESCO conference to foster and promote the intangible benefits of the Caribbean Film industry ~ cultural diversity, dialogue, gender equality, economic development and it’s role in fostering peace across the region.
MEDULLA ART GALLERY
Medulla is a space to demonstrate art, not only as a social expression, but also as a medium for therapy and growth. The organization seeks to engage with and educate the public ~ including teachers, students, private and corporate collectors, investors, sponsors, art enthusiasts and media ~ through the development of new innovative programs and initiatives, workshops, artist talks, critical analysis etc; while partnering with other cultural institutions and organizations.

the carnival project
THE CARNIVAL PROJECT

BATALANYC promotes the music and culture of Northeastern Brazil and its interplay with other regional dance, music and art forms.
The Carnival Project was the organization’s inaugural annual event, reinterpreting regional Caribbean and New World ‘carnival’ themes through a contemporary fusion of 50 batala drummers, bagpipers, New Orleans brass and my video installation entitled CYOA Rhythms. The video installation was designed to punctuate the rhythms of different genres of music. It explores issues of gender politics, inherited legacy and diasporic experience through the lens of a child.
The event was held at Littlefield, an eco-bar / performance space located in the still-emerging Gowanus neighbourhood of Brooklyn. Housed in an old warehouse from the 1920s, the space merges Gowanus’ industrial past with an eco-friendly future, serving as a beacon of sustainability for further neighbourhood rejuvenation.
ABOUT BATALANYC
BATALANYC is a community organization of batala drummers. They provide participants with drums, instruction and an on-going community performance platform. Their mission is to teach any woman, regardless of musical experience to play the powerful rhythms of samba-reggae. Part of a larger global arts education project, BatalaNYC began in 2012 in response to a lack of opportunities for women to drum in NYC.

INSERT2014: The Sharp Edge of Global Contemporary

Designed to be a constellation of conversations, the exhibition and symposium attempts to renew focus on the artist as a generator of ideas— those who question things the world takes for granted. INSERT2014 examines the social, cultural and geo-political role of an artist in re-defining cultural infrastructure in New Delhi. Intended to represent contested perceptions of time in its design, the Mati Ghar building itself, is a key axis of INSERT2014.
A site-specific proposal of my Confessions of an Insomniac installation has been included in the New Models of Common Ground programme.
INSERT2014 was produced by the Inlaks Shivdasani Foundation and supported by the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan and Prohelvetia-Swiss Arts Council, with Raqs Media Collective as Artistic Directors.

SARAI READER 09: THE EXHIBITION

A projection involves an incandescent transference - some crossing of a void to effect luminous landings on a distant surface. Without projections we would have no cinema, no city plans, no forecasts, no wagers, no fantasies. Projections convect questions, magnify dreams and illuminate desires.
sarai 09: projections operates across two surfaces: on the printed page of the Sarai Reader (the 9th and final publication of the series) and within the context of a contemporary art exhibition. I contributed an essay to the reader entitled, Taking Flight: Perspectives from the Depths of an Ideas Factory. The work explores the life of an idea across an ad agency, a social movement and a war zone.
Sarai Reader 09: The Exhibition was supported by The Royal Norwegian Embassy, New Delhi.
ABOUT SARAI READERS
The Sarai Readers were published once a year by Sarai— the media arm of the Centre for Study of Developing Societies (CSDS). Each issue was structured around a specific theme and invited writing by practitioners, academics, activists and artists from diverse fields.

THE ANNUAL

The artworks presented in The Annual (2011) draw inspiration from a range of everyday experiences across contemporary South Asian culture. One of the themes to emerge was a desire to explore and contemplate labour-intensive and process-based practices in examining issues and ideas relevant to global transnational societies— resisting the mainstream impulse of the instantaneous digital age.
The Annual (2011) was a juried show at the Living Arts Centre Gallery, Mississauga (Toronto) and showcased the video installation entitled, ‘Carne Vale’. The exhibition was presented in collaboration with SAVAC (South Asian Visual Arts Centre).

CONTACT Photography Festival’s ’Still Revolution’ (2009) examined how each significant innovation in photography’s evolution has radically altered the creation and consumption of images, irrevocably changing the history of visual representation.
A photo-series of the ’Joss Paper’ assemblage work (burnt / altered passport) was exhibited at Launch Projects Gallery (Toronto), where the curatorial inquiry posed a question— ‘what’s your revolution?’
