Additionally wouldn't just having a child tick off all of these boxes better than anyone else ever could. He could shape him on a fundamental level. He could collar him as a child and just tell him it is a normal amplifier so that he only has to use it in case the child steps out of line in a dangerous way like backstabbing him or something similar.
Lesser mortals have been able to shape their children in significant ways and he is a skilled manipulator immortal who has good faith in his manipulative skills. It just seems unrealistic to me that he didn't even try. He could put some invention directly into the baby's chest so that he fucking explodes when he wants him to or something equally fucked up. He would always have the upper hand in this situation.
I would also argue that the Sun Summoner being born into the Morozova line was more probable when it is established that her existence is basically to balance out his; when Ilya was the mastermind behind their existence; but even if not the Sun Summoner, some auspicious child to set off his loneliness should still have been in the picture.
I’ve gotten vaguely similar asks before. x x
I just think he would be far too averse to having children (both for practical and psychological reasons) for this to ever be a deliberate strategy.
In my opinion, he’d be too wary of the threat and weakness any potential child would pose for him. A child can die, can be held hostage, can be a liability, can emotionally compromise him. He hates emotions! And also if they’re another immortal Grisha then they could very well be a future enemy that he’s created for himself.
Meanwhile, physically looking like he’s ambiguously just out of his teens for multiple centuries, and also being stuck with his mother— who very much treats him like a child— for all that time, emotionally defines him too strongly as a son. I don’t think it would even really occur to him to want to be a parent.
Also how many kids must he have before one of them maybe possibly turns out to be the Sun Summoner? That’s way too many potential ways for things to go wrong with very little indication that a return on his efforts is actually even possible.

I thought that's what you meant by deranged, me thinking she could get better.
I think you must be trolling at this point. but no, anon, I meant the implication that a perfect child can somehow magically fix a parent, or that that might even be something they could be held responsible for.

Character ask game: you know I gotta go Integra and/or Alucard lmao
okay let’s go with integra!
favorite thing about them: love a character with an intense worldview dichotomy! the fact that integra hunts all vampires but then she has the emotional support pet vampire at home. love a built in existential crisis like that.
least favorite thing about them: uhhh I guess she’s just not very fleshed out in canon? I’m pretty unsatisfied with the ending where she’s made such a monumental choice to dissolve hellsing but we don’t see how she arrived at it because of the fucking time skip. likewise I dislike that she’s still even talking about alucard and walter that far ahead? idk I would like for her to have moved on after *thirty years* but also if she hasn’t then I want to see why? what’s going on with her emotionally?
favorite line: “you cut his head off? is that all?” is very fun in its smugness. also in gonzo when she tells alucard “you don’t make decisions” like. lmao.
brOTP: …walter? there aren’t enough characters in this series
OTP: alutegra baybey! we love to see a twisted mess of power imbalances. the way deep seated resentments and genuine emotional investment can coexist. chivalric devotion turned obsessive and suffocating. the moral quandary of like. what does it mean to be loved, above all else, by a genuinely sadistic, awful, bloodthirsty monster? someone who represents everything she hates but is the only person she can depend on? someone her family, who she is so very proud of, has done unspeakable things to— but perhaps for a good purpose and with cause? what does it mean to even consider returning those feelings? love a morally and philosophically messy ship! like he is her dog on a leash and they are inevitably going to destroy each other one day but in the mean time they’re going to bicker like an old married couple.
nOTP: I guess the major? I’ve seen that sometimes and I do not like it!
random headcanon: I think she’s very bad at technology (while alucard is very good at it)
unpopular opinion: my girl would have the most rancid politics known to man!! I feel like fanon leaning towards her being bizarrely progressive and like. she runs a paramilitary organization for the british monarchy. she’s part of a *feudal* style secret government. I don’t want to hear a single word she has to say about imperialism, the british empire specifically, or anyone’s human rights
song I associate with them: many songs bc I have many hellsing playlists lol. but one is haunted houses by emma ruth rundle

Harrowhark Nonagesimus
for the sake of my sanity I’m not doing the favorite picture or associated song options for the character asks unless I happen to already have a particular thing in mind!
favorite thing about them: harrow was my immediate favorite on introduction! I loved what a massive bitch she was lmao. I love pettiness and competence. the way she’s genuinely pretty nasty and very pathetic and then completely fucks over gideon’s escape attempt?? it’s great
least favorite thing about them: I love harrow but she spent so much of HTN so utterly miserable that there wasn’t quite the GTN era charm to her? I wish she got to be a little bit worse to people, a little bit more conniving. the soup and the g1deon murder attempt definitely helped! I would have liked more of that
favorite line: “Oh, Griddle!” said Harrow pityingly, in the silence. “But I don’t even remember about you most of the time.”
the. foreshadowing lmfao.
brOTP: I love how in GTN Palamedes immediately wants to be her friend and she’s just like 🔪🔪🔪
OTP: idk undecided! I like her with both Gideon and Ianthe. I’m frankly kind of a dios apate jr enjoyer
nOTP: I see people shipping her with John rather frequently and I do not personally enjoy it
random headcanon: on the ninth she def spent a nonzero amount of time outside the tomb thinking about what kind of life the body had lived. who she might have been. and how harrow herself might have met her
unpopular opinion: I don’t really participate in the fandom but I get the impression that she’s really softened in fanon.

“Memory, origin of narrative; memory, barrier against oblivion; memory, repository of my being, those delicate filaments of myself I weave, in time into a spider’s web to catch as much world in it as I can. In the midst of my self-spun web, there I can sit, in the serenity of my self-possession. Or so I would, if I could.”

I feel like had she been been blessed with a better normal kid, she wouldn't have been this depressed, empty person now. She could have had some character development and gotten over some of her childhood trauma and moved on if she has a decent kid who eased her fears instead of giving her more reasons to be scared.
this is an absolutely deranged take away thanks for sharing

Why do you dislike Mal? I get that he has some flaws but as compared to darkling he is a literal Saint.
He’s fucking boring. Also see: the tantrum he was throwing through the entirety of S&S
I’m also very much not going to judge a protagonist/ endgame love interest and the villain by the same standards lmfao. Characters exist to serve narrative functions, they’re not real people to hold to moral standards.
Anyway I was actually rooting pretty hard for Malina in book one because Alina seemed so invested! Then he showed up at the fete scene to yell at her and I was like. oh. never mind.

I have mostly only seen Baghra hate in Darkling apologia circles so this makes me curious. What is your overall opinion of Baghra? Especially her morality.
I like Baghra! I think she’s a really interesting character that just isn’t fleshed out very much and suffers for it. I think book one specifically just feels like LB wasn’t really thinking about her as a character as opposed to a plot device.
My general interpretation of her is that she’s probably supremely depressed by TGT era, given how inactive she is. And I mean she literally kills herself in R&R. There seems to be a huge discrepancy between the values she raised Aleksander with and what she believes in the present. I suspect the shadow fold may have something to do with that? Or again just depression. We don’t know why she stopped using her own power aside from the vague implication that it’s to protect her son’s identity, but I think it ends up painting a larger picture of someone who’s just lost interest in everything. And we do see a hint of what an entirely different person she was in the Demon in the Wood era.
I don’t have particular opinions on her morality tbqh. She seems like she never really got past the formative experience of being neglected by her father and hated by her mother and then everything that happened with her sister. Like no shit she’s not particularly emotionally well adjusted.
She seems to have had a child more out of a desire for companionship than like any particular maternal instinct. There’s mention of her trying to have thee most powerful kid ever but I suspect it’s more because she wanted to ensure immortality again more for companion ship rather than actually caring about the power itself. And with their isolated fear filled lifestyle early on, like even if she *was* the most competent parent ever (which. we have established that she was not) you wouldn’t have gotten the best results.
I feel like Darkling stans do act insane about her. Like I remember seeing conversations about aww poor Aleksander he must have felt so betrayed when Alina sided with his *abuser.* Like fuck off sjfhf it’s obviously a way more complicated dynamic than that. And I’d argue that multiple centuries in, there actually isn’t a power differential between them anymore.
But it seems like the boundaries were bad! That she almost definitely set him up for his megalomaniacal tendencies! And also that she imparted her own fears of vulnerability to him. Like I do think that with her own history of being so neglected she overcompensated by raising her son to the idea that he’s above all reproach (but her own lol) and that other people’s lives simply do not have as much worth. (The same kind of elevation and isolation that he tries to pull with Alina)
So yeah idk I think the fact that Aleksander is such a piece of work falls directly at her feet but also like. it’s understandable?

This may just be because of me zoning out while reading the book but I don't think John did anything wrong well besides like gaslighting harrow about her opening the tomb.
did you miss the part about killing every man woman and child on earth in search of fruitless revenge and then hunting down the descendants of those who got away for the next 10000 years
also hes the one who told g1deon to go kill harrow and continuously played dumb during the ten months she was fighting for her life. also he lied to his saints about the nature of lyctorhood so all of their cavaliers died pointless deaths. and his empire regularly employees child soldiers if it isnt outright dependent on them. and he quoted a tumblr post irl
