In a veritable firework display of digital self portraits, hundreds of quaint, embarrassing and dread-fully disturbing selfies were arranged in a unique short film composition. Single photos, artistically reworked, consolidate to form a ghastly grin that outshines the abyss of human existence.

Someday this will pass and there will be nothing left. The inevitable spaghettification of it all. That's not something to fear "because we come from nothing" as Alan Watts puts it... and from nothing comes something new. Similarly to a much lesser degree, this project was pieced together repurposing old and unused material from my shoots to create something new. What started out as a series of throwaway Instagram experiments turned into something a lot more climatic.

"ISANG MILYON" means one million in Filipino. I clearly dont' know how many fishes I saw but maybe more than a million !

Some shots I took during incredible dives last year. It was the first time I saw a sardine run. This is how I tried to transpose what I felt in this edit. The dynamic song really helped me to edit this insanity. I chose the black and white grading to accentuate the graphic side and the movements of the shoal.

Ralph, a lonely kid in a forgotten town, has a miraculous gift. He can see beauty manifested through beams of light permeating from people who are ignored and seemingly invisible - just like him.

To achieve the light ray effect, we hand traced and laser-cut over 4000 frames to create shape mattes, then physically shined light and haze through each individual frame to produce the stop motion effect. By mixing old school animation with practical haze over live-action footage, we were able to create the eerily atmospheric new dimension you see embedded in each frame.

The project started as an exploration of different techniques and visual languages inspired by the current projects in the Motion Graphics industry. Hence the name TRENDS. Slowly but surely, it outgrew the initial premise and started to take on a life of its own with more ideas and techniques, but maintaining the original underlying principle at its core. This led to a series of five short pieces, each with its own title that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
