Who is that behind Ponyboy?

Why did they put Ponyboy’s head on Steve’s body?

Why’d they give TwoBit a tattoo and take away his Mickey Mouse?

Why does it look like Johnny is gripping Twobit’s arm?

Whose car is that? Why does it clearly have California plates?

And, finally… the title of the film (translated from Italian to English) is “the Boys from 56th Street”. Where is 56th street??

The Curtis house, built as accurately as possible.

I can tell you right now this is the worst thing that I've ever done to myself, but it is done. I'm very happy with how this turned out, I didn't build the whole property because even I don't hate myself that much, also there are some things I had to completely make up because there is 0 material available of the back rooms of the house among other things.

I HAVE to thank @dallasgallant for their absolutely incredible contribution to the fandom, not only for figuring out the floorplan but also everything else!

welcome to @hintonchallenge, hosted by @richieshepard. this is a tumblr for writing challenges focusing on works by s. e. hinton that is semi-public and focused on all of s. e. hinton's novels and the two francis ford coppola movies. participation is only for people 18+, with works posted on ao3 on completion of the challenges.

what is this?

this is basically a writing challenge where a prompt or theme is selected by the moderator and participants write to said theme. the themes usually have a minimum word count of 3k and once challenges are completed, they will be posted onto an ao3 collection. the goal here is to do things that are more out of the box for fandom, and to stretch a little more.

this is also something created to cater to fans who prefer the novels and movies over the musical. the fandom has changed recently, and some people would prefer a more dedicated space to things that don't involve the huge canonical changes.

how can i participate?

this challenge in semi-public, meaning that every one who wants to participate either has to be invited by me, the moderator, or a friend. this is done to keep to the goal of it being for the general se hinton fans and not the musical, to keep it to an 18+ audience, and to make sure that no harassment can take place.

once you've been added, challenges will go up and have sign ups. sign ups are mainly checking to see that you want to participate, giving me your general idea, and then understanding when the deadlines. after that, you're tuned loose until the mid month check in and then posting your works when posting week opens! all that's required is posting to ao3, tagging correctly, and hitting the minimum word count.

this challenge does not police content within fanworks. as long as everything is correctly warned for upon submission, do what you like.

when will the first challenge go up? when is it?

the first one will go up on the first week of may! i'm currently deciding the subject.

I've been thinking about putting this poll together for a while, and I figured that the anniversary would be a great opportunity.

The Outsiders has so many great book covers, and it got me curious as to which one is the most popular. So I'd like to know, when you imagine a copy of The Outsiders, which cover comes to mind?

I tried to put together as many as possible, but there are of course some that I missed. There are also variants of the same overs (I know the 1997 Puffin and 2021 Viking have rereleases with different colors), so just choose the one that best fits yours.

Over the Edge is a wiiiild movie. It was one of the most stressful film watching experiences I've had.

It's also interesting that Matt Dillon was just a kid ditching class who caught the attention of the filmmakers. He's pretty good in this, considering that he'd never really acted before. You can totally see this as a blueprint for the characters he would play in the future...

I don’t know cars, but it’s definitely something he can race in. I always kinda thought it was a Franken-car. The frame from this one, the engine from another one… he’s always working on it and improving it.

It’s also got a great back seat. 😏

I think I’ve posted about this before and I’m too lazy to search for it, I’ll write it down this time but what kinda car do we think Steve has?

We’re lucky enough to see Two-bit has a 1949 Plymouth super de-luxe, the Curtis’s old ford is mentioned in the book and shown in the movie.

but Steve’s is never shown or mentioned type wise. It’s likely a older car but idk if he’d go more truck like or something like Two’s car where it’s more to mod for races/plain affordability

I keep thinking about all the Anthony Perkins reading photos I've seen and just how Ponyboy coded they are...

I've got this headcanon that Pony can be found reading in all sorts of weird seated positions. Scrunched up on the floor, sitting on the kitchen counter, leaning over the arm of the lazy boy... At least he's on the couch this time, but does he have to have his shoes on the back of the cushions?

I know the television show has its own set of issues, but I cannot express how much I adore David Arquette as TwoBit. He might not be book accurate, but he really encapsulated this character’s heart for me.

I far prefer him to Emilio.

I absolutely think you’re correct.

Hinton has said multiple times that she didn’t want a remake of the film made. She liked the way it came out and her level of involvement in it and knows she would never again be that closely associated with the production. If they were to make a film version of the musical, it’s because Warner Bros and the production team behind the musical want it made. Not because Hinton pushed for it.

I get the feeling that she feels very far removed from the musical, and she’s dropped several hints in interviews saying just as much. Even when everyone was congratulating her for the Tony win she said “it’s their win, I’m just on the team”.

I don’t know if she’s stands behind the musical fully (I doubt it) but that wouldn’t stop the studios from trying to make a couple more bucks off her story.

We have yet to have an official statement from the studio or the musical production team. Susie could have just leaked something very in the works, very early in the concept phase, and it might not ever happen.

But do agree with you. If a film version of the musical is made, it’ll be to pad the executives pockets with easy money so they don’t have to try for any original material.

Because heaven forbid they take a chance on something that hasn’t been done before.

A whole bunch of promo shots I found on EBay. I don’t think any of these are new shots, but I find it interesting that they were distributed for Fox. Gotta assume it was to help promote the television show.
