What to do when the engine overheats. When your car engine overheats, there might be an explosion of steam underneath your hood, which means your hoses have blown, and you need to be towed. Overheating is less likely to occur if you dutifully check coolant levels and the state of the hoses. But even the best-maintained vehicle might give up in bumper-to-bumper traffic. 1. The best thing you can do is try to avoid a complete meltdown by keeping an eye on the temperature gauge. If the needle starts climbing dangerously high, get off the road and park someplace safe, where the car can cool down. 2. if you missed this sign, the car is overheating, and it's not convenient for you to pull over, turn your air conditioner off. 3. if the car is still overheating, you must suffer through far worse to save your vehicle. Turn your heater and fan on full blast. Turning the heater and fan on actively diverts more heat out of the engine and into the passenger area and takes the load off. 4. if it's still overheating, pull the car over immediately and turn it off. If nothing else seems wrong, wait 45 minutes for the car to cool down. If it starts and runs at its normal temperature, you can drive off, but keep a closer eye on the needle during this time.
