Class 7.2
Design can compared to writing. To get good at writing, you have to read great books by great authors. Classics. Immerse yourself in the worlds of those who have gone before you and have refined their craft. It’s the same with design. Immerse yourself in great design work, get inspired and go from there.
- Crafting after drafting - do quick proofs of concepts. Set small timeframes for yourself and restrictions.
Workshop Activities:
Create a quick portrait:
30 minutes 1 human features 1 object 1 reference to a place Any technique A4 portrait/horizontal

15 minutes 1 human or object reference Any technique A4 portrait/horizontal

^such a fun and valuable activity - I usually spend so much time agonising over a decision but sometimes you just gotta work fast and refine later.

Interview today!
I looked at Otter and set up an account for transcribing the recordings afterwards!
(sorry for the late update) It was super interesting to hear about my father’s early life and receive a whole new perspective about living in the Philippines.
Currently, I’m just editing the conversation (in total, it was 36 minutes long) and I’ve already identified some interesting topics:
- Province every summer holiday.
- Pilgrimage every year (heavily religious upbringing).
- Devotions to different saints.
- Surrounded by family growing up.
- Memories with the sisters.
- Childhood pets and animals.
- Voltus 5 - all the kids watching the show going out on the street watching it after school.
- High school and university - subjects and medicine vs computer science.
- Quite adventurous - always playing around, hide and seek, swimming in the water.

SDL - Preparing for the interview
Yoooo so here’s the game plan friends - I drafted out an assumption map, which contained possible talking points and questions. I realised during this short brainstorm that there was a lot of gaps in my knowledge that I wanted to fill or assumptions that were never really confirmed.

I still need to suss out the location and time with my dad (as well as give an official pitch/request), but we’re thinking this Saturday! The electricity’s gonna be out (they’re doing some big thing with the street’s wiring - so we’ll head out and have a good ol’ chat!
Framing:
I’m genuinely curious about my father’s life growing up in the Philippines and to hear his struggles and triumphs up until this point. So my approach will start off quite broad and chronological - but then again, I will allow him to guide the conversation and I will try to pick up on key words and possible flow-on topics!

SDL Info/To Do
SDL Information/To Do list
1. Plan interview (create a pitch/give information about the project.
2. Get ready and make a plan (assumption mapping/draft questions)
3. Document your interview (look into otter.ai).
4. Distil, transcribe.

Chosen Person
I’ve decided to choose my father as the person I’m going to interview and learn more about. Naturally, I’ve known him my whole life and there have been many lighthearted and funny conversations that we share. However, seldom does it occur that the topic is weighty or those trivial things don’t get unpacked. Also, I don’t know that much about his earlier life ~ there are a lot of traits that I see in him that I admire and want to learn more about.

Class 6.1: New brief

Key Takeaways:
Assumption mapping and consider the imagery that you might associate with them.
The Five Skins:
1. Epidermis (literal skin).
2. How we look - what’s immediately around the person.
3. The house/the space around them.
4. Nature, other people, family, home country.
5. World/nature/earth ecology/outside universe.
Consider how personal your informatino is beacuse you’re going to share this with the group later on.
When asking someone, present the rationale and provide infromation - why. Also, ask for permission.
Listen and find those opportunities/key words that you can further unpack.
Do not take notes when having a face to face interview - it will disrupt the connection between you and the interviewee.
Keep POP in mind! People, object and places.
You’re going to exercise many different skills: interviewing > writing > editing > graphic designing.
Summary of Deliverables
A holistic portrait of an interesting person:
Content generation > image making > editorial design.
2 sequential double page spreads:
1. Interview the chosen person and learn/understand the person and key aspects of their life (context such as other people, objects, places, etc that are important/significant to them). 2. Generate content by recording, transcribing and editing the interview (for your InDesign document). 3. Create a minimum of 3 images with image-making techniques that portray the person. 4. Design 2 DPS using selected typefaces, layout design (with clear hierarchy of information and grids).
Things to do:
Choose a person.
Assumption mapping of the person.
Look over the brief to summarise the deliverable for DP2A.

Organising this Tumblr
Yo I’m basically done but man this Tumblr is not as organised as much as I’d like it to be ~ so I’m gonna spend some time trying to make some more categories and stuffff yaaaaa.
UPDATE: I finally figured out how to use the tags and links to the pages. So I went through all the previous work and updated the tags so you can see them on their specific pages. But yahoooo I’m donee!!!

Rationale
Idk if this will be the final post - might add a couple more things later on but we’ll seee. I know my writing has been super informal and crazy at times but I hope y’all were entertained by the chaos.
This project has probably been one of the most intense ones to date regarding time pressure. I know it was created to simulate real-life industry work - and yeah it’s pretty similiar. I remember my first client job bringing the same kind of pressure so I just had to stay calm, cool and collected and breathheee. I think working and other uni commitments definitely added to the intensity but it really pushed me to prioritise tasks, make fast decisions (even if imperfect) and not be such a perfectionist until the last stage of refinement. Before, I would be stressing over tiny details at the beginning of projects but this time, I had to get comfortable with producing lots of work and lots of drafts initially. Then at the end could I start refining everything.
One of the most valuable things I learnt was the idea of proofs of concept. Instead of mindlessly pushing pixels around with no direction, I developed a habit of sketching out an idea, then roughly recreating it on Photoshop or Illustrator just to see if it had enough potential to develop more. This saved me soooooooo much time and it is a learning I’m going to keep applying in future projects.
I wanted to challenge myself and expand my skills and honestly that meant Photoshop. I think from previous posts at the beginning, you all would have known that I was trying to get better at using this application and of course it was difficult and really placed me out of my comfort zone. But after treating so many photos on Photoshop and googling quick tutorials, I’ve become so much more comfortable with the program. I’m still more familiar with Illustrator and Indesign but it’s all evening out - we’ll get there! I’ve also pushed myself with image-making techniques - I never usually play around with photos - I’m more of an analogue designer so this project was definitely a learning curve. But it also increased my appreciation for digital collage and opened my eyes to the potential this technique held.
Honestly I had so much fun with this project - even though it was a time crunch, I found that to be an element of excitement and overall, I’m really happy with the learnings that I have come away with the experience! I hope you have enjoyed this design journey as well and here’s to many more! Churrr.

Brand Guidelines/festival proposal
Alrightyyy people the brand guidelines are done! I just tied up the loose ends and made sure everything was super cohesive. Creating this was easier than expected because it was just a refined version of all the work I had done and posted on Tumblr. The design system I had established throughout this entire project was so engrained in my mind that making things cohesive in this document was smooth sailing. Also I’d like to say that all the tips and tricks I learnt from Materials and media so far about Indesign are coming in so handy. With these guidelines, I wanted to ensure that everything was covered and all the visual constants and variables I analysed and adjusted were mentioned. I approached this document with a little bit of a marketing perspective. At the end of the day, it’s all about the client and what they want so everything has to be geared towards that intention. I included a bit of marketing research as well from weeks ago just to give a little more context to the proposed designs. Anyhoose, I’ll stop rambling and place the document here for y’all to see!

Final adjustments to collateral
yoyoyo sorry I’ve been MIA today I was so focused on the brand guidelines/festival proposal document - I’ll discuss that later tonight!
But according to the design system I established I made one adjustment to the brochure and made the last bit of info left aligned instead of being centred.
^For the ticket, I used the vertical version of the SOTG logo as the squared off composition is much cleaner and easier for the eyes to read (it just makes sense y’know)

Second Logo
Wait I dont think I ever said this in the wordmark development :000
But this particular wordmark I made ages ago:
was inspired by:

Brand Guidelines:
- Make sure you explain your reasoning (rationale).
- Fix the page numbers.
- Establish a header and footer.
- Organise Tumblr.
- Have fun with it.

Brand Guidelines
Much more fresh on the eyes and begins to introduce the design system.
BTW materials and media knowledge is helping me soooooo much with paragraph styles and all the neat little tricks. I’m really really enjoying the process! I also think solidifying the design system for such a long time is making the process of laying this out so much faster!! Leshgoooo we got thisss!!!
^I’m using lines to separate information. The numbers are inspired from the map and wayfinding device (collateral pieces). The page numbers represent the land because it’s at the bottom. The halftone shadow is also a constant variable in the design system.
