Ever wondered what I get up to when I’m not embroidering? Well… it used to be some real boring spreadsheet type bullshit. But now it’s this. Hooray!
OMG friends big news! I can finally share that I’ve got a short story set to be published this summer in this collection! Also, surprise, y’all all get to know my name now. It’s Jack. For the very small number of mutuals who might have thought I was called something else, time to update my entry in your rolodex.
The piece I’ve written for this collection is inspired by the public library of my childhood. In the ‘90s, before the Internet was ubiquitous, there were so few places a gay person in a small town could go to find the words to understand our desires. That’s what the library had to offer: the ideas to explain what was going on in our own crazy heads, and the knowledge that we weren’t alone. This story is a reflection on the terror and joy of discovering all that. It’s also a reflection on how smokin’ hot would it be if two painfully shy bookworms got naked in the library (spoiler: VERY).
This is the first time I’ve ever been published, and it feels like such a huge accomplishment. I’m not exaggerating when I say that ever since I was a kid, I wanted to be a writer (solving murder mysteries from my living room in Maine was optional but also very much an aspiration). As a few of y’all know, I walked away from my corporate job of almost 20 years a few weeks ago. So even though I’m not exactly pivoting to a full time career as a romance novelist, getting a story out there is a big boost to the hope that I’m good at something more valuable than pushing around PowerPoints all day.

Day 17 at this point in a project I really have to step back and view the piece at a distance to see how the marks read. The biggest challenge is going to be where the scars intersect and overlap the contours of his jaw.

Day 16 man I love working up the scars and ridges on his face, we’re really into the fun parts now

Day 15 so when I say “tricky”, I mean 5 different greyscale colors and stitches as small as 1-2 threads wide kind of tricky

(if you’re reading this, mother: I’m not mad, I just think it’s extremely funny)

Day 13 every time I talk to my mother she says some wild new thing like it’s no big deal. This week it was “we never took you to the doctor as a child because your grandfather was a Vietnam medic” implying that if it was anything short of stepping on a land mine, we oughtta just walk it off. I tell you what, the more I learn, the more questions I have.

Day 12 one of my aunts (since passed) used to tell me stories about raising hell at protests in the 1960s. Did you know how much it fucks up a vehicle engine to pour sugar into the gas tank? A whole lot, apparently.

(why not just watch a free video on youtube or whatever, you ask? well: because it’s fun to get in on the live conversation. And also because I’d rather give $5 to a real human book lover than to Google via ad hits.)

Day 11 fun new habit: listening to academic talks on folklore and horror literature while I embroider, because did you know there’s a ton of folks who are just putting live talks out there for like $5 a pop?

Day 9 just a few weeks after resigning from my job and a truly distressing number of people (four) are already trying to convince me to re-enter the workforce right away. My dudes, please just let me hide out here embroidering & writing porn for a FEW more weeks before dragging me back to hell.

Day 8 I’m not much for the whole winery tour concept but this weekend somebody else was buying the wine and it was a damn fine day to sit around on an outdoor patio stitching

Day 7 as I slowly recover from nearly debilitating burn-out, I look forward to the day when I can do more than 2 tasks a day before wanting to go back to bed, but… we’re not there yet

Day 6 solid progress was made while tuning in to an online presentation on the changing role of the spirit medium in British horror film. In related news, not having to be in a cubicle at 3 pm on a Wednesday rules.
