celebrating the launch of Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3 a.k.a. my contribution to Clown Alley
hi Tumblr, I wanted to make one of my first contributions to this blog something sincere while still capturing the genuine feral energy that occurred. so I’m going to tell you a brief story about one of my contributions to the game we’re launching today. to preface: we’re really hoping to share more in-depth, goofy little blogs like this one to give you insights into our development structure. hopefully that’s something you’re interested in, but if not, hang out because we also might post other stuff. you gotta give us that chance!! so to paint the picture - today, April 22nd, 2025, we launched Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3 over at Strange Scaffold. it’s live on Steam, and (we hope) many people are going to play it over the next few weeks. maybe months. maybe it’ll sit on your wishlist for a bit until one of your friends is frantically checking Steam wishlists on December 24th and it shows up in your notifications!!
Anyway, I get tasked to make art assets for the studio sometimes! it's a lot of fun. they let me get my hands all over the podcast logo. they let me do the studio's launch logo for Creepy Redneck Dinosaur Mansion 3. they let me do whatever this was for Valentine's Day:

just so you know what we're working with here. so jump back to January. the team's working on different environments for the game. I'm lurking in the text channels for real-time updates, as one does when they're collecting programmer crumbs for content like a small Victorian child. I watched the following conversation unveil in what I'll present to you as an abridged version:
and like a golden retriever locked onto a squirrel passing me by as I sat leashed outside the Whole Foods waiting for my owner, I could only watch as I anticipated -
I was around.
I had no visual in my head for this. I truly let the spirits guide me. in the past, friends had critiqued my Photoshop shitposts for still "looking too good." That wasn't going to happen today. after falling down a hole for an hour -
the spirits had finished. I exported my canvas. I surveyed my delivered PNG and within it found no hubris to behold, merely a newfound sense of peace and acceptance.
and as I watched the resulting feedback trickle in -

"Suddenly, you can understand the full deal behind that hallway with stock images of clowns with added context."
— Charlie Kelly, checkpointgaming.net
I couldn't help but wonder if anyone would observe the finer details.
I like to think they will! happy matching :) — Christa @ Strange Scaffold

sooooooooooooo many things to scream about tonight but number one on the list is the difference in the ways dylan and mark's outies talked to their innies. from the get-go mark scout is nothing but patronizing to mark s. he created mark s as an escape from his grief, and now he wants to use mark s as a means to an end to save his wife and pick up his life where he abandoned it. he gets helly's name wrong and calls her 'the person you're seeing' because he doesn't recognize mark s's humanity. he sees mark s as an extension of himself, and he only loves gemma, so of course whatever mark s feels for helly can't be real or worth fighting for. and when mark s understandably doesn't see it his way, mark scout lashes out, calling mark s a child.
but then you have the letter dylan george wrote to dylan g. in three paragraphs dylan george talks to his innie like an adult, like they are peers. he's angry at dylan g, but at the same time, he understands why dylan g did what he did. he would have done the same if he were in dylan g's place. after years of being jealous of his outie, dylan g learns that his outie thinks he (dylan g) is the one to emulate, the self-assured badass. and where helena and mark scout made their innie's decisions for them ("i am a person. you are not.") dylan george breaks the cycle: he offers his opinion, but ultimately puts the decision back in dylan g's hands.
at the end of this season, dylan g is gifted agency. and after fulfilling his purpose, mark s steals his agency back.

my gf said something sooo insane about helly the other day and i cannot stop thinking about it. she was like. helena and helly’s relationship is almost maternal. the way helena created helly as an extension of herself, to serve her interests, to try and impress her own family. she scolds helly, talks down to her like a child. “i understand you’re unhappy with the life you’ve been given” “i am a person, you are not”. the way she envies and resents helly’s freedom. the way she feels entitled to helly’s life and is now living vicariously through her in the most literal sense. what if you created life and now they’re experiencing the things you’ve always wanted for yourself. what if you created life and they were flawed and loud and demanding and they were loved more than you’ve ever been. and you hated them for it. the mother/daughterisms are insane my girlfriend is insane

the whole severance process and its subsequent success being manufactured from and built upon the labour and suffering of two women. one a child who designed severance to cope with the reality of the world she was forced into, and one being a woman of colour who was kidnapped and turned into a toy to be used at the whims of a white man. and you all wanted to know why ms huang is a child. well here is your answer. a teenage girl of colour currently under the same scholarship as cobel happily and matter-of-factly carrying out the subjugation of people who only exist because of what lumon exploited out of people like her. lumon having entire institutions dedicated to the continued indoctrination of vulnerable children. lumon systematically ensuring any amount of class or race consciousness or solidarity between their subjects is impossible by having them carry out each other's exploitation on their behalf. the innies just being a new rung at the bottom of the ladder whom the disenfranchised and marginalised can feel empowerment in stepping over. and ms huang is just the next in a long, long line of victims

all the big reveals in severance just make so much sense. there’s never a plot twist that feels like a dumbass mindfuck. every new piece of information we learn i’m just like. of course OF COURSE. of course harmony was a child laborer with a phd who invented this evil brain surgery of course there was no other option there was no other story but this one

the thing is like. of course cobel invented severance. of course the girl who spent her whole childhood doing backbreaking labor in a fume-choked factory from sun-up to sundown would dream of a way to erase the memory of the aches that came from hours spent stirring a vat. of course the girl who never had a work-life balance because lumon owned every aspect of her world would want to force that separation into existence. of course she sold her soul to the company store and immersed herself in the teachings of kier and earned every single thing she accomplished through dedication and industry. and of course jame eagan took credit for it all.

she’s unhinged she’s religiously traumatized she’s a child soldier she’s a genius she’s 5’1 and commands every room she walks into she’s middle-aged she’s good with babies she’s bad at baking she’s a horrifying driver and she has never done anything wrong in her life

cant stop thinking about the fact that mark and gemma met while donating blood.
a painful and uncomfortable task that they both volunteered to do.
the kind of chore u might prefer to avoid if you had a severed version of yourself to do it for you.
so in a world where everyone delegates unpleasant tasks to their innies, you might never meet the love of your life
