More beautiful BGs from Jeffrey Thompson and the BG artists of Gravity Falls!

By far the biggest episode we ever made was Weird 3. So I’ve split this into two posts. I spent a lot of time trying to capture a sky that I had felt was suited for a world as crazy as Weirdmaggedon, and I finally found one I was happy with by the time we made it to Weird 3. The top 2 Images line art was drawn by Ian Worrel, and painted by me. The third image was pretty much a collage of art that I pieced together from multiple artists from the show. Some line art by Janine Chang, Ian Worrel, Paul Tsui, and some line art and paint by myself. The explosion in the ground was drawn by Ian Worrel or Sun Jae Lee, and painted by me. The Bill painting I believe was drawn by Stephanie Ramirez, which I then painted.

These were some of my last contributions to the show. It was an absolute pleasure working with everyone to see this series come the conclusion it deserved. Thanks for everything Alex!  All images drawn and painted by me except the shot of the empty bedroom. That one was mostly drawn by Ian Worrel and painted by me.

Here’s a bunch of promo drawings I did during GF season 2. Other than the big promo poster, I’m not sure if these were ever finished and used for anything or not. 

I remember when Alex and I were brainstorming ideas for poses, we couldn’t figure out what to do with Soos. 

“Just draw him eating chips out of a bag.” 

I did, and when we sent it in, the Disney marketing people were like, “We can’t imagine why we would ever need a promotional illustration of the character Soos eating chips out of a bag.” This still makes me laugh.

So a while back I was asked to help out with some animation issues in the development of The Legend of the Gnome Gemulets. Some of the stuff that came back just wasn’t hitting the aesthetic we were hoping for. So here are a few little cycles I did. I haven’t seen the final game so I dunno if they even used any of it ;;;

Monsters on Monsters on Monsters! From the unnerving mind of

Rob-Hurt Cryin’ Gorey   Robertryan Cory!

Weirdmageddon Designs: there’s actually quite a few more but tumblr only allows 10 spots and I wanted to show off the process. First I know you tad strange fans are going to think you influenced the design of the compass/ruler. I designed him back in may 2014 (animation takes forever to get to audience). So I’m making it clear, I’m not influenced by the internet, I’m only influenced by artist who lived in the 40′s. When I started on Gravity, Alex came by my desk and started flipping through my sketchbook. He kept saying “this is great, we can use this”, he then pitched me weirdmageddon and basically told me his plan to have me design everything crazy I could think of. So I actively started to squirrel aside ideas for it earlier in the season. When I started on this Alex and Alonzo had ideas about what they liked and I tried to follow their notes and ideas. When asked to come up with my own stuff I thought demons. Pyronica was my idea of what Bill’s blue flame would personify. The Demon baby was something that had been floating around in my imagination for years and was a good fit for this. I remember having the most trouble with 8-ball. Alex just didn’t seem to gel on any ideas I came up with, but it came together through several back-and-forth design sessions. Alex will famously declare he doesn’t draw well, but he’s a huge liar and I think collaborating with him is pretty fun. I’ll try to post some more soon.

A New Challenger Approaches! Dana Terrace knocked us out with these insane title cards for the in-house executive pitch!

When we pitch our boards to execs we like to show them who worked on the episode through these fake title cards. I went a little overboard.

I usually try not to let my GF work take over my personal blog but I can’t help it for this episode. It was by far my favorite script to work with and I put a lot of this thing called “heart” into it. Hope you guys had fun! :) :) :) ;)  (the ride’s only just started). 

The last frame didn’t make the final cut but I liked it enough to include it. Waving goodbye to Grunkle Stan after their talk.

Explorations of the UFO, by the insanely talented Jeffrey Thompson. A lot of care was put into the design of this location, but one of the hardest things was figuring out how to make the material look “alien.” Jeffrey and art director Ian Worrel came up with the brilliant solution of using photographs of abalone shells and mapping them over the metal reflection to give it the otherworldly look you see in the final!

Having grown up obsessed with all things UFO’s, being asked by Ian Worrel to design the interior of one for Gravity Falls was a dream job. There was a lot of art done for this episode, so I’ve tried to be selective. I’ve included some of the earlier explorations above that led us to the final. A lot of what we talked about was designing this thing to feel BIG, and painting it to feel like it’s been there for thousands of years. It was decided that the top floors closer to the surface would have been infiltrated by nature, vines and water damage, but as we proceed to the lower levels of the craft, mother nature would have less of an impact and we would get to see the ship closer to it’s original state (minus some damage from the crash) Alex Chechik is responsible for the last two layouts which I then painted. There are also some vines in there drawn by the talented Sun jae Lee.
