A background that’s going to be used in Who We Are that’s coming out tomorrow! I worked on this with animatrocities who did the lineart and thekuiwi who began flat coloring and painting but couldn’t finish so I painted most of the picture.~ This bg flashes by quickly in the MAP and I really love it so I figured it deserved some spotlight! <3

Ford and Bodily Autonomy
I think it’s interesting how some people think that Ford is completely against any manipulation of the mind or body.
It’s not too surprising that this is an assumption that people make of his character. Bill tortured him mentally and physically through his possession, so you’d assume that he’d have a moral stance firmly against using magic/technology to manipulate someone’s mind or body for any reason and that to do that to him would be the greatest betrayal.
But that’s not what we see in canon.
In canon, Ford made a mind control tie and let the government have it. Later on, he even let Mabel and Dipper use it on Stan and didn’t even flinch, just telling them off handedly to use it responsibly. In fact, he was so nonchalant about this, that he didn’t even record it in Journal 3. Which I find interesting, because he recorded most of the other events that happened while he was back. I think it’s interesting because he probably thought that this whole thing was okay because he knew that Mabel and Dipper wouldn’t use the tie to hurt Stan. However, he completely neglected to consider that Stan probably wouldn’t like to be mind controlled and would feel hurt by it.
There was also when Dipper tried to use the memory gun on Ford because he thought that Bill was possessing him. This instance is especially interesting because you’d assume that Ford would at least feel a bit betrayed by Dipper not believing him or by the idea of Dipper trying to erase all of his memories. But no, he understood why Dipper tried to do that and even praised him for it.
Ford even wanted Stan to erase Ford’s memories to kill Bill. The only reason Stan sacrificed himself was because of the metal plate in his head.
I just think all of this is interesting because it paints the picture that Ford thinks this stuff is all okay with the assumption that the person is doing it for a good reason.
Which I think makes sense. Remember, Ford gave Bill permission to possess him in order to work on the portal more. Ford was only betrayed by this when Bill started to use Ford’s body to hurt him and try and destroy his reality.
I’m not too sure where I’m going with this. Maybe just to comment, “wow, isn’t it fucked up that Ford thinks it’s fine to give literally everything in order to pursue some greater goal?”
I think it’s also interesting to think about where he got this particular moral from. I mean, it was probably his dad. The man was literally just trying to use him for money. I don’t think Filbrick ever praised Ford for anything other than his academic achievements. (Especially when you consider that the “he’s weak, he’s a loser, I just want to get rid of him” line would also apply to Ford. I wouldn’t be surprised if Filbrick meant to say that about both Stan and Ford)
#man you'd think Ford has learned his lesson after the whole Bill situation#but his conclusion was “it's okay to let others use you as long as they're trustworthy”#Ford just trusted the wrong person and that's what he's focusing on#not a healthy mindset i agree#the guy is so desperate to be useful he doesn't mind being exploited#gravity falls#stanford pines
