I love how the things that make gon seem adorable and innocent and the things that make him seem ruthless and terrifying are completely connected

he’s clueless about a lot of things (including some normal perceptions of morality)

he’s extremely forgiving (even when the person in question has done awful things that just didn’t happen to affect him personally)

he’s very trusting (because he can afford to be; if the person in question turns out to betray him he can just tear them apart and continue on his way)

he cares deeply for his friends (and has absolutely zero mercy for those who hurt them)

he deals with everything through unfailing optimism (and breaks down in spectacularly destructive ways when that optimism finally fails him)

he loves the thrill of adventure (especially combat)

i love gon. i love how complex and layered he is and how he turns the “plucky innocent shonen protagonist” trope completely on its head. I love Hunter x Hunter so much

i just realized that gon always introduces himself as 'gon freecs' as firstname-lastname unlike usual japanese names which are lastname-firstname. i can't remember if this is something everyone else does too. could it be to establish that gon and the others are not from japan (or hxh equivalent?)

They main 4, with the exception of Killua, are definitely not from Japan. Whale Island is not a Japanese island, or else Gon would’ve known what sushi is in hxh 1999 when the subject of sushi came up lol. My best guess is that his family is actually native to Whale Island, but whether that’s analagous to any real-world location is unknown. Kurapika’s from a diasporic culture with its own language, clothing, etc (see: Kurapika’s Memories oneshot). It’s unclear where leorio’s from, but there’s nothing to suggest he’s Japanese. Killua might be Japanese, based on Zeno’s outfit (the kanji on it are significant given that most of the hxh world doesn’t use kanji, so he’s either Chinese, Japanese, or really into one of those cultures), his mother’s name being Kikyo, Kalluto’s kimono, and Alluka’s shrine maiden outfit.

Characters that ARE definitely from the hxh equivalent of Japan include Hanzo (this should be obvious, he’s a ninja with an extremely old-fashioned Japanese name), Basho (named after a Japanese poet and says that haiku is a poetic form from his home country), and both Neteros (Isaac wore a kimono with geta, had the heart kanji on his shirt, and referred to guanyin with her Japanese name [kannon]).

Fun detail, Knuckle wrote his challenge to Killua and Gon in both English and hunter kana, which implies that English is the language he usually speaks and that he rewrote it in hunter kana in case Killua and Gon don’t speak English.

In most other anime I’d assume everyone’s Japanese by default, but hxh is very intentional in being about people from different places all over their known world. Hunters in particular don’t care about borders or nationality.
