🌙 lore: nests
Everyone nests. Nests are generally rebuilt every two weeks or so, to clean the blankets, pillowcases, and nest covers. Scented items may be changed out more frequently, to keep the scent fresh/strong.
There are several different types of nests, with three being most common:
The classic, built on a frame (generally round) or the floor. They’re often surrounded by canopies.
Dens, which are more built somewhere more enclosed—such as a closet or modernized victorian box bed.
Perches, which are built somewhere raised—such as a loft/bunk bed or hammock.
The materials and set up of nests vary. Some prefer soft and blush, others more sturdy. Some want fuzzy, others silky, and others more linen/cotton. I've got a pinterest board with several examples.
(The stereotype is that alphas prefer dens, betas prefer perches, & omegas prefer a classic nest. This is reflected in media, & marketing for the various types.)
Each dynamic can be very territorial over their nest. Entering without first being invited is a good way to get yourself bitten.
Victims of abuse, or who lacked stable lives, may show a lack of interest in nesting, doing only the bare minimum. Others become even more territorial and defensive of their nests, not even allowing pack in. Still yet others may hide their nests. It can take time for their instincts to realize they’re safe.
Omegas become very fussy nesters during pre-heat. Their nest has to be just right, and this can cause frustration, sometimes to the point of tears.
If there’s space enough in the home, a pack will have a special pack nest they’ve built together. These are communal lounging spaces. Pups spend a lot of time there. If there isn’t space enough, the pack leader’s nest will double as the pack nest.
Pups tend to nest with their parents/guardians for the first two or three years of their lives. After that, they generally share a nest with other pups until around ten to twelve, when they develop a desire to have their own space.
If there aren’t enough pups for a pup nest, pups may stay longer with their parents or rotate between nests.
Older packmates may also choose to nest together, especially in times of stress… but also just because.
Pups usually build nests with their parents and/or siblings, to teach them how to do it on their own.
Pups moving into their own nest is something of a coming-of-age event. If funds are available, a big deal is made of picking out and setting up a frame (if applicable), and pack members will all gift pillows, stuffed toys, blankets, etc. Some will be new, others hand-me-downs. The pup then assembles their nest, usually alone, and shows it off. They usually have company the first night, though some want to prove they’re Big and sleep alone. There’s often a bit of an adjustment period, though, and they may end up regularly back in their childhood nests.
Nests play a large role in courting rituals. Gifting nesting material is a popular early step. Gifting scented nesting material is an indication of more serious partnership. Building a nest together is one of the final stages of courtship, as it declares an intent to bond.

Given how important smell is, I'm picturing all sorts of merchandise saying "You smell like drama and a headache. Please get away from me."
XD Hilarious! It could be an ad for some kind of people repellent. "Introverts fear no more! Now you can make it known you don't want to be talked to!" Or for an omega starting their heat. "Scared of pesky alphas who may push too far? People repellent!"
"People repellent! Social distancing solved!"

❀‎✿❀Collars❀✿❀
❀ I think a lot of people think having collars in the omegaverse would be a bad thing, but I really like collars so now I have to write this post... ❀
‧₊˚✿Throughout History✿˚₊‧
❀ In my personal verse, collars have been in and out throughout history. Sometimes they were an alpha thing, sometimes they were an omega thing, sometimes they were something typical for betas. ❀
Alphiarchal societies used to use them to signify status
They were used to signify being mated
People who worked in royal courts/castles used to wear them as a sign of loyalty
Omegiarchal societies would use them to signify ownership, in some places omegas would put them on themselves, others they would be forced
In some places they were used as protection
Betiarchal kingdoms would give them to war veterans also a sign of bravery
Some places would use them to display primary or secondary genders
Theocracies and religions would depict Gods with collars. Sometimes they would signify being trapped, other times it was a symbol of godhood
And of course, there were times in history where collars were completely banned in some places
‧₊˚✿Modern day✿˚₊‧
❀ Now collars are typically used as a fashion statement. Some see it as taboo or old fashioned, but collars still come in and out through generations ❀
In media, collars are either depicted as something that has been used to hold down omegas and betas, or it is seen as a romantic love confession
Depending on how well the movie's made, and how well they show consent, the message can get confusing
Sometimes people will wear collars to proms or big events to show their mated status
Other times people will buy collars just to burn them as a symbolic show of freedom from someone or something. It could be anything from an abusive mate to a shitty job
And you can't forget people are who just into collars for bd/sm
Alri, that's all I got I think. Feel free to add your own if you want.
Come talk to me, I love making friends U^ェ^U

I really think the phrase "if we slick together, we stick together" is a rude one. It completely ignores trans omegas and omegas who have slick issues. Furthermore, it is completely ignorant of trans-alphas. I really think the phrase needs to be edited.

I know we talk about asexual people in a/b/o a lot (and that’s probably because it started as a sex thing for fanfics) but can we talk about aro people in omegaverse for a sec??
Tw for arophobic things ppl would say probably
like I can just imagine
“what do you mean you don’t want a mate??”
“Omegas NEED an Alpha!” ( /mate by extension )
“Alphas that don’t want to mate are selfish,” (because Alphas are supposed to protect and not picking a mate can be seen as going against the alpha instinct to protect an Omega- which society thinks is the most helpless dynamic)
I can see how for Omegas/Alphas it’s harder to come out as aro than it is for Betas. Because well- Betas are Betas and so who cares if they don’t want to get with another? Not saying Betas don’t go through discrimination they definitely do. But I can see that with Betas being the majority that there’s a small established Aro community that was founded by Betas that are the largest aro community.
I can see Betas saying they don’t want a mate and others saying that’s ‘unwise,’ because ‘why act special/stick out’? Or “you need one because then you can be societal secure,” (in my verse Betas that aren’t mated can be seen as less capable because ‘you have all the fish in the sea and you can’t pick/find one?’ Since Betas are a majority and it’s semi harder for Omegas/Alphas to pick Alpha/Omega mates)
Individuals of any dynamic being told “i can fix you,” and “well, you’ve never dated me,” and other bullshit like that
Omegas that don’t want a mate are seen as individuals that are ‘trying to hard to not be taken care of,’ because they think the Omega is just a punk being stubborn if that makes sense?    Alpha’s are usually sent to therapy by people who wont/don’t want to listen and or don’t understand because they think they’re ‘broken’
I see my verse are like modern with some backwards views that’s often running society even if they don’t want to because in my verse the ✨government✨ Control shit and are assholes to every dynamic
if anyone needs elaboration I can :D!

Hot take but asking a beta couple which one of them is the alpha and which is the omega is equally as bad as doing it to an omega or alpha couple. Yes, some betas lean towards one dynamic or the other, but you shouldn't just assume that the people you're dealing with:
a) both have leans,
b) have "opposite" leans from each other
c) want to share that with you.

Winter Omegas
In my version of Omegaverse, Omegas are the only dynamic that experiences regular, visible heats. Those heats are periods of hightly heightened arousal and fertility (of the getting pregnant kind - an omega in heat is extremely unlikely to successfully impregnate anyone) combined with heightened pheromone production. It's typically tied to many unpleasant symptoms such as pelvic pain, dehydration, or digestive system problems.
Normally, an omega in the temperate zone will experience between 1 and 4 (usually 2-3) heats a year between spring and summer. The heats may vary in length depending on both the omega and their environment. Close, prolonged contact with pheromones of an alpha in rut is known to shorten the span of a heat to as little as 5 days, while really unlucky omegas might spend nearly three exhausting weeks in heat. It's common for omegas without alpha partners to buy or borrow clothes from rutting alphas in order to shorten their heat.
Your typical omega will also experience heightened virility during early winter. This is not a distinct state the same way heats or ruts are - it has no strong symptoms or sharp borders, it's just a hormonal peak. Omegas will experience heightened arousal during this time, as well as some water retention, but it will be nowhere near as noticable as their heat was. Because of that, many people don't even know it exists in normal omegas.
Sometimes, omegas will have this cycle reversed. They will experience heats (most often 1 or 2) during late autumn or winter and a longer, more intense virile period during spring or summer. Sometimes, this phenomenon is triggered by traveling between different climate zones (especially different hemispheres) and temporary. Other times, it's related to deeper anomalies and permanent. People with permanently reversed cycles are called winter omegas.
Winter omegas have been traditionally associated with same-dynamic attraction and "alpha-like" personality/behaviour, resulting in many alphas treating them as competitors. This sometimes results in insecure alphas trying to throw a wrench in the works for winter omegas, but many of them embrace their identity and differences nonetheless.
Winter omegahood is sometimes caused by blindness - awareness of changing light levels throughout the year plays an important part in regulating the estrus cycle of temperate zone omegas. However, many winter omegas are able-bodied.
Efforts to permanently "correct" their natural heat cycle fail more than 90% of the time, and treatments might be more harmful than the condition itself, so the best course of action is just accepting winter omegas as they are, providing them with everything they need during both their heats and virile periods. Of course, winter omegas may choose to go on heat supressants, but that's a matter of personal choice - most of the time, they're medically unnecessary.
Winter omegas are sometimes considered to belong on the interdynamic spectrum. Symbols representing winter omegas include compasses with the needle pointing South and magnets, referencing their "reversed polarity" compared to standard omegas.

I may be a bunny, but that doesn't mean I can't talk about other species!
Bird time!!!
Preening everyone in the pack
Singing songs!!! Passing them down to your pups!!! Packs having special songs to distinguish each other!!!
Alphas showing off to try and swoon and impress omegas
Using feathers to fluff nests and keep them warm
Speaking of nests, they're very much a conglomerate of things. Shiny and pretty is a bonus.
Offering a gift to end courting and become mates! Rocks, gemstones, crystals, jewelry, you name it
You could have eggs instead of live birth if you really want. Clutches instead of litters.
Adding onto eggs: the pack being very protective of every clutch, ensuring they're comfy in their nest. Omega parents keeping them warm and snuggling them until they hatch.
Lots of echolalia, repeating little phrases or sounds

A/B/O World Building: Omega Nesting Nooks
So, my headcanon for this is that houses traditionally had little nooks built in here or there, meant specifically for the household's omegas when the urge to nest took over or when they were in heat, or giving birth/new mothers.
Sometimes it could be a piece of furniture, or more like a closet.
Some would be more open if they were considered more communal; some would be more closed off if they were considered more personal/private
Alphas would traditionally have to ask permission before going in these spaces, as Omegas who are nesting can be very territorial
Sometimes omegas will choose to use their nooks as their regular full time bedroom, as the closed-in space makes them feel very safe.
Here are some pics from my Pinterest board (yes, I have a whole board of these)

this has been in my head for a while but A/B/O is so interesting fundamentally but the way people use it kind of makes me laugh
so you introduce a world where people have a secondary gender that in many cases overrides the first one but fanculture usually just makes it exactly the same as the original gender with more rules
so most people write their ships as alpha x omega and this is because alphas and omegas have a “deep biological sexual and reproductive bond that makes them more physically compatible than any pairing”. Scents, behaviors, and sexual reproductive season are so biologically synced that for the most part they are perfect partners for each other.
I have seen many stories mention directly that no other bond can compare between and alpha and omega because of their inherent biological and physical connection.
An omega (or beta) will never be able to satisfy an omega like and alpha can. Omegas are inherently submissive and their lack of sexual organs like knots make them less "suitable" to be companions with another omega.
An alpha (or beta) will never be able to satisfy an alpha like an omega can. Alphas are too dominant and desire to be in control that another alpha can never please them- only make them more aggressive or in some cases tame them into an omega.
of course i have seen many variations of a/b/o stories like i have heard of stories with two omegas or two alphas or omega and beta or the what not but so many go out of the way to mention a sexual incompatibility in the sense that is couple will never be “perfect” or “complete” due to their sexual characteristics.
then we can talk about how alphas are usually bigger, broader, more masculine more aggressive than betas and a strong sexual appetite, and a need to dominate. omegas are docile, with sweeter scents and smells, smaller more feminine and in charge of raising the kids and taking care of the house.
then we can talk about how so many of these stories end when the omega gets pregnant and has the child because there is no point in following the narrative after that.
half the push between why alphas and omegas must be together the a inherent unchangeable biological trait that makes them perfect for breeding and having children so society feels their bond is more special and valuable than any other so much so that any other variation is unnatural and incompatible
Sometimes I see stories where omegas are upset they are an omega because they often face discrimination but this is usually resolved when they find their super special alpha that makes them feel special and warm. Omegas are at the bottom, alphas are at the top but together they make the perfect couple.
I think my biggest gripe isn't necessarily omegaverse as a concept but rather people will take complex and interesting characters and conform them to these roles just so they write raunchier sex scenes. Like you will have a pairing between two males characters of equal standing but then the one that is deemed the most feminine of the two or the pretty boy is the omega and the more masculine or stronger of the two is the alpha.
tldr: i feel like you could do cooler things with omegaverse but everyone usually just tosses heteronormative gender roles, bioessentialism and misogyny onto gay people and dials up the horniness to 3000.

You know how women's fashion Is generally much more elaborate and varied and diverse than men's fashion. What if. In the omegaverse it was essentially swapped. And alphas typically wore these flashy beautiful ensembles to court mates. Yk like how some male birds look so much more flashy and colorful than their female counterparts of the same species for the same reason. Are you. Are you seeing my vision
