Highly relevant terms

Extersex - "[A] term for those who do not know whether they are dyadic or intersex. It could be because one feels as though they might be some form of intersex, but are unable to medically confirm it, or cannot confirm what intersex variation it is. It may also be for those who have a variation that may be considered intersex, but are uncertain if they want to identify as intersex." - @themogaidragon

Inter-Questioning - "a term for anyone who is questioning if they’re intersex, for any reason. (Whether it’s due to one’s physical body, familial experiences that imply one is, or possibly simply a mental feeling that one is intersex.)" - @eldorr

Quoisex - "[An] umbrella term for anyone who doesn't quite understand their sex or doesn't want to define their sex." - LGBTQIA+ Wiki Note: I understand this as more general than extersex, and would include people questioning if altersex. See the wiki entry for subtypes (quoigonadal, quoichest, etc)

Altersex - "An umbrella term to describe having or wanting primary or secondary sex traits/characteristics that do not align with the binary sex model that a significant portion of society has adopted. It is primarily used by those who are not intersex and are trans+ and wish to or transition specifically to have a body that does not fit the aforementioned sex model." -@intersex-questions Note: Being altersex does not make somebody intersex. I include it because many people questioning their intersex status realize this is what they're looking for.

Anisohormonal - "Aniso (unequal/uneven) + hormonal (relating to hormones). An individual who has an imbalance of hormones for any number of reasons. Such individuals may or may not also be intersex." - @sproutflags Note: includes non-intersex variations such as diabetes.

Subtypes of intersex people

Note: In my experience most people questioning if they're intersex have a hormonal intersex variation like PCOS, so I'm skewing towards this accordingly.

Dysgonadal - "[having] dysfunctional gonads. This includes agonadal (no gonads) and hypogonadal. Also known as gonadal agenesis/dysgenesis, dyssex and nullogonadal/asexed (null sex or avaginal/aphallia)." - @arco-pluris Note: contrasted with eugonadal - "people with functional gonads (reproductive cells). Includes hypergonadal (hyperfunctional gonads)"

Interhormonal - "Someone who is intersex and anisohormonal and/or feels that being intersex has impacted their identity as anisohormonal in some way and/or that their identity as anisohormonal has impacted their identity as intersex in some way." - @sproutflags

Intermeer - "a term used to describe all intersex variations that are caused by an overproduction of horomones (testosterone, estrogen, or both.)" - LGBTQIA+ Wiki Variations include: AES, FMPP, PCOS. Part of The Autre System for categorizing intersex variations.

Intermindre - "a term used to describe all intersex variations that are caused by a lack of horomones (testosterone, estrogen, or both.)" Note: The wiki lists AIS and EIS as examples although they are not due to a lack of hormones, but rather a lack of sensitivity to them. Part of The Autre System for categorizing intersex variations. Mesosex - "[A] person who has an intersex variation, but one which does not conform to perisex (non-intersex) ideas of what intersex is. For example, people who have intersex traits that are considered "mild", or who have variations such as PCOS Hyperandrogenism and Poland Syndrome." - @ipso-faculty

Winter Omegas

In my version of Omegaverse, Omegas are the only dynamic that experiences regular, visible heats. Those heats are periods of hightly heightened arousal and fertility (of the getting pregnant kind - an omega in heat is extremely unlikely to successfully impregnate anyone) combined with heightened pheromone production. It's typically tied to many unpleasant symptoms such as pelvic pain, dehydration, or digestive system problems.

Normally, an omega in the temperate zone will experience between 1 and 4 (usually 2-3) heats a year between spring and summer. The heats may vary in length depending on both the omega and their environment. Close, prolonged contact with pheromones of an alpha in rut is known to shorten the span of a heat to as little as 5 days, while really unlucky omegas might spend nearly three exhausting weeks in heat. It's common for omegas without alpha partners to buy or borrow clothes from rutting alphas in order to shorten their heat.

Your typical omega will also experience heightened virility during early winter. This is not a distinct state the same way heats or ruts are - it has no strong symptoms or sharp borders, it's just a hormonal peak. Omegas will experience heightened arousal during this time, as well as some water retention, but it will be nowhere near as noticable as their heat was. Because of that, many people don't even know it exists in normal omegas.

Sometimes, omegas will have this cycle reversed. They will experience heats (most often 1 or 2) during late autumn or winter and a longer, more intense virile period during spring or summer. Sometimes, this phenomenon is triggered by traveling between different climate zones (especially different hemispheres) and temporary. Other times, it's related to deeper anomalies and permanent. People with permanently reversed cycles are called winter omegas.

Winter omegas have been traditionally associated with same-dynamic attraction and "alpha-like" personality/behaviour, resulting in many alphas treating them as competitors. This sometimes results in insecure alphas trying to throw a wrench in the works for winter omegas, but many of them embrace their identity and differences nonetheless.

Winter omegahood is sometimes caused by blindness - awareness of changing light levels throughout the year plays an important part in regulating the estrus cycle of temperate zone omegas. However, many winter omegas are able-bodied.

Efforts to permanently "correct" their natural heat cycle fail more than 90% of the time, and treatments might be more harmful than the condition itself, so the best course of action is just accepting winter omegas as they are, providing them with everything they need during both their heats and virile periods. Of course, winter omegas may choose to go on heat supressants, but that's a matter of personal choice - most of the time, they're medically unnecessary.

Winter omegas are sometimes considered to belong on the interdynamic spectrum. Symbols representing winter omegas include compasses with the needle pointing South and magnets, referencing their "reversed polarity" compared to standard omegas.

i haven't decided where the golden league is situated, it's vague enough to accommodate a variety of characters, but it is pretty much a casual dining place that has a good reputation for lasting so long and being consistent, but also chaos embodied

there's a lot going on but these are my favourite bits from my au:

kyle rayner applied to be a barista / coffee artist, but he ended up being a server anyway because there's just one small meager coffee station at the golden league and diners usually just want a simple coffee as quick as possible

courtney whitmore may not be legally allowed to drink, but maxwell discovered the law doesn't say she can't mix and serve drinks!

barda and scott are married; guy and tora are each other's workplace crushes; i haven't imagined romantic dynamics for the rest of the servers so far but who knows

helena bertinelli will call a problem guest an idiot to their face; helena wayne will also do the same, but using her polite charm so the guest feels smart and sophisticated as they don't realise she's calling them an idiot

kyle hates waking up early, helena wayne hates working late; so she clocks out early and he clocks in late, maxwell knows something is wrong but he can't call it out because their system is so efficient

helena bertinelli is essentially a de facto leader because she knows how things work, but she won't accept promotion to manager because she likes her tips

if you want clean silverware faster from kilowog, sneak in snacks. jason was server for one day and he messed up orders just to build up friendship with kilowog

jason is the busser and likes it that way but occasionally he'll step in if any of the female staff is dealing with a creepy guest

jess gives the fastest service, staying true to their regular storyline; they prioritise rescuing their own tips over ensuring business for maxwell

martha and jonathan are nice diners, but servers fear having them in their section because the kents are very chat and hold up servers for a good thirty minutes, unless you're one of the servers who know how to quickly walk away from tables (jesse, helena wayne, and charlie gage-radcliffe)

maxwell is everybody's common enemy in a dad sort of you: you know he's not a bad guy, but when things go awry it is easy to blame him. helena bertinelli is the one employee he yells at the most but he never writes her up

lex luthor is the owner of the rival business LexEats™, he spends more time at the golden league, usually in disguises or coming up with some dumb excuse to eat there, than at his own business, trying to figure out what the golden league's secret formula is for doing so well

i reimagined harleen and pamela as a rich couple who threaten to leave bad reviews each and every time and act like they're too good to eat there, yet they're regulars and specifically request to be seated in helena bertinelli's section because they enjoy arguing with her and her verbally destroying them

renee and kate are the patrons who are almost always on the verge of breaking up, and helena wayne is usually their server who stands there awkwardly until she suddenly becomes their common enemy and they start redirecting their anger on her

it is prohibited to yell at jaime, tora, charlie, and courtney. do that and you're banned for life

helena bertinelli once let lex luthor he's drinking the league's "most expensive and rare wine exclusive only for the finest diners" when in reality he pissed her off so she just served him watered down grape juice in a wine glass

There has been some inquiry into how we can confirm that Dylan's pistol was the DC Mini model. Below is additional information pertaining to this firearm. The TEC-9 series includes several models and variants:

Identification of Dylan's TEC-DC9M Model

It is essential to differentiate between the TEC-9, the TEC-DC9, and the TEC-DC9M. The TEC-9 and TEC-DC9 are distinct models, with the TEC-DC9M (mini) being a smaller variant of the TEC-DC9. The manufacturer of the TEC-9 pistols, Interdynamic USA/Intratec, was founded by George Kellgren and Carlos Garcia, but it is no longer in operation. The TEC-9 was originally the KG-99, which was rebranded in 1984 when Kellgren sold his stake in the company to Garcia.

Clarification on TEC-9 vs. TEC-DC9

Confirmation of the Mini Model (DC-9M)

The distinction between the TEC-DC9 and TEC-DC9M models is significant, as the “M” indicates “mini.” Similar to the KG-99 being rebranded as the TEC-9, the KG-99 Mini was rebranded as the “TEC-9 Mini.” We can confirm that Dylan’s firearm was the mini model based on the following criteria:

Barrel Length: All mini DC9M models feature a 3” barrel, in contrast to the 5” barrel of the standard DC9 model. Dylan’s firearm has a 3” barrel, easily identifiable when compared to a TEC-9.

currently thinking abt the interdynamics of each kingdom’s retainer groups. here’s the best one!

King Henry, while having some of the most vocal and least respectful retainers, lucks out in securing a harmonious, strongly loyal trio that serves him and does not risk falling out as much as the other kings’ retainers. Their shared lack of self-restraint in criticizing him serves to continually humble his ambitions, though they can sometimes be somewhat negated by Sir Oliver, who soaks up any positive words said his way (and who is also continually humbled by the other two in the trio).

Tactician Percy, lacking tactics despite being his role, often receives most of his ideas conspiring with Sir Duck and Sir Oliver in exchange for whatever amusing observations he’s seen while spying or surveying. Sir Duck and Sir Oliver often banter due to their shared roles as knights and their different goals. Sir Oliver has an intense desire to fulfill his duties to their liege and to serve gloriously in battle; Sir Duck prioritizes keeping their liege from becoming too power-hungry, and his fellow aides well.

Cross Guild poly info, but I'm gonna focus specifically on interdynamics because I freaking adore them and as someone polyamorous myself, it's super important to have and foster connections one on one and by and large.

Let's begin!

CrocoHawk

• they have had a mutual respect for one another for years prior to falling into orbit of each other. Mihawk always found Crocodile's no nonsense attitude to be wonderful and Croc in turn found Mihawk's unapologetic authenticity to be refreshingly real. They really went from acquaintances to friends to lovers pretty smoothly.

• they both enjoy quality time as their preferred dates, either something parallel where one reads and another practices something or they attend something like an opera or an event with minimal socialization with others.

• Crocodile cannot cook, but he is a decent prep assistant so some moments between them are in the kitchen with music playing and it's quiet and peaceful.

• they're both very hard headed and set in their ways. They're also opinionated. Sometimes this makes them a force to be reckoned with as a united front. Sometimes it means they fight like cats and dogs.

• they both take a very long time to come around to the idea of being a unit as opposed to two small islands with a little bridge between, but once they do, they are COMMITTED.

CrocoBug

• They knew of one another prior to Roger's execution. Crocodile was on Whitebeard's crew specifically which occasionally crossed the Rogers. He had seen Buggy around a few times and never understood the appeal until one evening after a friendly battle, during the feast, when Buggy walked right up to Roger, handed him a small bottle with a tiny scowl, and said "your chest is crying again, you didn't take your medicine." Roger laughed it off, complied, and sent the angry boy on about his evening. When asked about it, Roger laughed brightly, explaining that he'd caught a bug a few islands back, Buggy and Crocus were being overly protective, and the kid's observation haki was off the charts, even by his standards. If Buggy says he hears something, Roger tells them proudly, you'd damn sure better listen. Crocodile ends up looking over, trying to steal glimpses of this young child who earned such regard from such a man as Roger.

• they go years without seeing one another, though Buggy did have a bit of a puppy love crush on Croc when he was young. It eventually petters out, and they are tangentially aware of the other in a vague sense. It isn't until Impel Down that they are pushed into proximity again. Crocodile was uncaring at best in the beginning - and then there was a damn near revolt on the stolen ship, he was preparing to go on the offensive, and Buggy - enigmatic, long haired, cowardly (?) Buggy - stomps it out faster than Croc could fathom. It is then, seeing the glint of calculation behind fiery blue eyes, that he begins to Think.

• nowadays, they are together, and their preferred time together is usually parallel engagement. Croc will do his paperwork and report reviews while Buggy works on trade routes, navigation, ciphers and his weapons stores. The Guild expands rapidly with many offers of sponsorship or partnership as they extend their horizons beyond general bounty assignments.

• Buggy sings to himself while he's working, a soft little thing where his voice pours over words and melodies like honey. Croc gets to used to it that sometimes doing his work without the background noise leaves him antsy and bored. He's embarrassed to admit it.

• Buggy meanwhile begins to associate the scent of Croc's cigars with productivity. You know that saying, some folks wind you up and others calm you down? That's the poly ship, but Croc and Buggy wind each other up.

• they both have formidable tempers. Usually it doesn't ignite on each other - Buggy out of mild fear and desire to not fuck it up - but when they do explode on each other? Oooh, it can get WILD.

• the make up afterwards is equally if not more so.

• Crocodile is the one to bring up to Buggy questions about his mental health. It's not to be mean, but he poses it as a "I once had this business partner who did X, Y, Z things, you remind me of them a lil bit. You good?"

• Buggy's all over the place and needs near constant assurance that he is loved in a way that makes sense to him. He will not ask for it because he's both embarrassed by it and also terrified to be denied outright. Luckily Crocodile doesn't pull punches. Words are not his strong suit, but his affection and care are shown in other ways that Buggy learns to know.

• on Bad Days for either of them, Buggy demands snuggles. He's a cuddly person by nature, and he can usually convince Crocodile to at least humor him in that. His baby doll eyes are a lethal weapon, and so he'll climb Croc if the other is busy or will drag the other off to pull him down on top of him, tuck the other's head on his chest over his heart, and will play with black-violet hair, singing, chattering or simply breathing. It's good for them both.

• they also bond over the fruitwanis. Buggy adores animals, loves them so much, and the fruitwani are no exception. He enjoys learning about their care, likes learning in general, especially when it's important to him or interesting. Crocodile is happy to share something he loves so dearly with a person he loves as well. ((His biggest act of devotion, respect and care is when he gifts Buggy his own 'wani. The reptile hatched differently from the rest, either smaller than average or with an odd coloring scheme or something else. Crocodile took one look at the baby wani and thought "Oh, my clown would love you." The idea remained for a good deal of time. Survival of newly hatched wanis is finicky, so the idea remained until he knew this one was likely to live, to survive and thrive with the right care. He trusts Buggy with that care. The trust is not lost on Buggy when Croc gives him the lil one))

HawkBug

• while they don't seem to mesh at first glance, these two actually compliment each other nicely. Buggy matches the energy around him when he isn't in a position or role to perform. This can lead to cute moments, soft moments, and absolutely unhinged moments

• Mihawk has many bird like tendencies true to his moniker, but he also spent a lot of time with the humandrills and so has some more.... animalistic ape like habits as well that he hides more often than not. Chief among them is his version of a smile being more bared teeth and his habit of grooming others. It's acts of service and instinctive. He is thriving.

• on that habit by the way, he and Buggy are both autistic coded to me and I love the idea of them sharing in stimming and hobbies and special interests. Mihawk is No Thought Head Empty when Buggy is going absolutely insane over chemicals and synthesis and balancing equations. He enjoys seeing the clown so happily animated. He understands nothing other than Happy Clown, Happy Birb. Buggy likewise doesn't understand a lot of Mihawk's gardening but he loves seeing his swordsman boyfriend enjoy himself and stim while talking.

• speaking of stimming - Mihawk loves Buggy's hair. It's a good color, texture, look, thickness, weight, he is constantly fighting a battle to not just shove his hands into the hair 24/7. Buggy wouldn't mind at all, he likes having his hair played with usually, but Mihawk had a Reputation. Once the Guild calms a bit more and everyone relaxes into each other, he'll stim more freely with select people around beyond his boyfriends.

• Buggy has spent a lifetime trying to avoid some of his more notable stims in order to be taken seriously, so having Mihawk unapologetically saying "wait no tell me more" or "do what makes you feel best - you are most beautiful when you are happy" makes him SOAR with butterflies. Visual stimming absolutely is great, but he also loves vestibular and kinesthetic stimming. Aerials his beloved ♡♡♡

• stim dates stim dates stim dates

• speaking of dates: despite general ideas, Buggy's not always one to want big Flashy dates. Sometimes cooking dinner with Mihawk while they chat or play music or dance in the kitchen is the most rewarding to him. They usually wind up both laughing and pressing close and sharing kisses while making whatever recipe they decide on. Sometimes Mihawk will take point with a dish he knows well. Sometimes Buggy is the one in the lead. Regardless, it's usually a cozy affair with good food, better company, some drinks and cuddles near the end, all wrapped up with a good book or conversation.

• they both have a guilty pleasure for trashy romance novels, so sometimes they'll both read a book, have a lil book club about it and have fun discussing it, making fun of the wording or plot or characters, sometimes trying to figure out positioning in certain scenes and then absolutely losing it when they make eye contact either because of how ridiculous the posing is or because one made a stupid yet silly comment or one liner that sends the otherr into hysterics.

• Mihawk snorts when he laughs and Buggy loves getting it to happen.

Hello! If IOL were to get adapted into a TV show (or film I suppose), what are some things you'd be excited for, or things you'd want revealed that we don't get from Elliot's POV?

(also fun fact: my name is Elliot too! It may or may not have been very helpful in getting me to read the book three years ago)

Hi Elliot! A fine name. :)

The silver screen by its nature allows us into more points of view - it’s why my TV tie-ins always had more and briefer PoVs than I usually write, to give the same effect as a moving camera. And In Other Lands is a very limited third by design, since we really have to feel Elliot’s feelings to be in it with him. So immediately a visual, more-on-the-surface medium would open the story up to more reveals - there’s a lot to be done with Serene and Luke, and (for my money) with Captain Woodsinger, Golden, Adara and Myra.

The question also arises what the director’s or showrunner’s vision is, because the showrunner would not be me. There are so many different ways to tell a tale.

If they’re going gritty child soldiers, there’s more to be done with the wars between the different peoples, with dryads and dwarves, and with Delia Winterchild and her lost twin. If they’re going, say, romcom like a fantasy Heartstopper, we’re probably putting Wings In the Morning and In Other Lands in a blender and starting with the characters 15 and up. If they’re doing children’s adventure a la (gayer, weirder) Percy Jackson, we might meet the key three waking up in their respective settings on the day they head off to the Border camp - Serene exiting in a rebellious huff after blazing row with her mother, Luke worried under the weight of loving expectation, Elliot totally clueless and friendless in another world - are these children going to meet? What will hap— Holy SHIT the redhead is being rude! But we’d get it, because we saw where he came from.

The mood of a story is often dictated by what information you parcel out when.

And TV throws curveballs. (Movies less often.) What if the Elliot and Adara actors had lightning-in-a-bottle chemistry? What if Luke and Dale did? I hardly dare imagine. I’d be really excited if they did any kind of series, because that’s such a show of faith in my work. And it would mean more job security, and new covers, and more chances for me to get more readers and perhaps most important of all to write more in the In Other Lands world… which (more on this later) I would love to do.

A show is always a wild shot - I’d always try to think of the books as my first concern, as they might do something totally bonkers with an adaptation. (Me, if Luke and Serene fell in romantic love while Elliot died a cowardly weasel’s death: What Show? I Cannot Perceive the Moving Pictures, I Just Do Not Know.) Buuuut, if it ever did happen, I would love to see more of the interdynamics at the Border camp, stuff that flew totally over Elliot’s head. I’d love to have Golden introduced earlier. I’d love to have the harpies in sooner, but as a sinister presence until the big reveal. And of course, channeling my inner Elliot, I’d love to see the mermaids. Throw the whole budget at mermaids!

i'm a little confused, I looked at the coining post for Interdynamic and I don't think it's for irl intersex/questioning folk? @/omegai is an omegaverse (like the fanfiction troupe) term coining blog so "secondary sex" in the definition of Interdynamic refers to "Alpha, Omega, Beta" dynamics/secondary sex and not irl secondary sex. Do you know of any umbrella/blanket terms for having actual irl variations in secondary sex outside of the "normative" standards I could use?

(normative in quotations b/c I think the secondary sex binary and the way it's enforced is Bad, but I'm not sure of the best alternative language!)

I generally use interdynamic or interdesignation and I feel like they would be the more Official/Accepted ways to refer to it in-universe.

Hi, maybe you can help me with this A/B/O problem. I’m working on a fic with a character who’s both Alpha and Omega but can’t find any official name for someone who’s an Alpha/Omega Interdynamic.

I’ve seen some use ‘Delta’ but when I looked it up it seems like it’s a term for someone who has Alpha characteristics but comes off as Beta.

And ‘Gamma’ is the same thing but with someone who has Omega and Beta characteristics.

im not super versed in omegaverse dynamics and terms, but i feel like plotting it out on a venn diagram might be helpful. like, "alpha/omega/beta" in the original 3 circles, then "gamma" and "delta" in the respective overlaps. then for the sliver where alpha and omega overlap, it's like, "okay what characteristics result from this overlap/what do they share, and what's a term that best describes that overlap?"

i'm tempted to say "sigma," but i think "theta" or "tau" might be interesting if there's not a term for someone who's an alpha/omega already.

personally im a massive omega andy activist bcuz of silvernyxa’s omegaverse fic. hes just Like That and he will always be Like That in my head. also beta joe for lots of reasons, omega pete, and alpha patrick. an argument could be made for interdynamic patrick but im generally an alpha patrick believer

Reunions and Bit city

If you go back and rewatch the reunion, you'll find that they can be pretty hit or miss. The Teletubbies one is a masterpiece, Garfield is a close 2nd to me. But some others are pretty unmemorable. In the better reunions there's a clear sense of structure and thought given into who these characters are, what their dynamic with each other is and what their problems are and that's a extremely needed structure to allow the cast to improve from there and construct and add more depth to create a hilarious thing and you need good writers to have that structure, that's focused but open to additions at the moment.

And most importantly it makes it so you don't need to know anything about the original property they're parodying cuz the character drama stands out by itself, thus making it accessible and hilarious to anyone.

Now compare it to the "reunions" so far in bit city, namely 1D and the Kardashians.

There's no clear dynamic to the audience to latch into, most characters have just one joke, with very little back and forth and everything requires previous knowledge to even find a thread to follow.

I knew about 1D thanks to that great Smosh mouth episode, but I know nothing about the kardeshians. And in both episodes, there's really no real dynamic independent from the original property nor dynamic to carry the whole thing. The joke about the 1D crew dating each other is a really good running joke, but what's the interdynamic between them? they're annoyed but one of them, two are flirting and they all hate one of them and one don't talk about Vivi. There's nothing intriguing drama wise.

Compare it with the Teletubbies reunion, they have so much more going on. Po is a (recovering) addicted, was married to LaaLaa, had a affair with Twinkie and Dipsy is probably gonna hook her up on some drugs again. Everybody is annoyed by laa laa's ego, but she was also incredibly hurt and has no time for Po's bs and hates Twink wink. And Dipsy is just done with everyone 's shit.

I could go on about this, but u get the idea. Bit city gotta up their character game for these longer segments and it would really help them to bring in writers to solidify their characters. It's just funnier this way.
