One of the reasons k love this song is one of the same reasons I love this description of it- there’s so many of us, the children and grand children of the colonized and immigrants, for whom this feeling resonates. And tho from my understanding he wrote this specifically about the Irish and the English occupation, along with references to locations in Australia, he leaves room for so many to see themselves, and see how common this theme is. Almost all of human culture has been impacted by the centuries (and continued in places) colonial rule, and to have the scars from that experience that pass thru generations so beautifully set to music just touches something in my soul

Maybe it’s just because I’m old, and was here when the old magics were written (no this is not my og blog, that was long enough ago that I no longer have access to the email it’s set up with and I can’t get logged in) but I refuse to sequester like that. Too much effort, yall will just have to deal with my fandoms out loud. I like discord for some things, but that’s an add on, not replacing the community that is tumblr

I think a lot of people are forgetting that on tumblr fandom used to be practiced very differently. now everyone fucks off to their discords or tumblr groups to discuss everything with a select few, making tags be nearly only used for posting some finished fanworks or not at all

a decade ago people didn't have tumblr groups. people didn't even have dms. if you wanted to talk to anyone about anything you had to make a post, or send an ask (which more often than not would get published and thereby become a post in the end too)

so next time you think "I have a fandom thought but I have to find a small group of hyperspecifically like-minded people to share it with in private" remember all the freaks you could be missing out on meeting by keeping the tags dead. use tags, make friends. fuck discord.

A little bit of introspection I stumbled upon this morning that perhaps will help someone else too:

I was imagining scenarios in the shower, as one does, about meeting a particular celebrity I admire and them falling in love with me, etc. (I promise I’m an adult woman in her 30s but being single is hard and real people are annoying. Fantasy celebrities are less so because they’re not real) but this particular celebrity is in fact married, so many (completely fantastical) scenario included his wife leaving him for being too upset about a friend who was recently diagnosed with a debilitating illness (the illness was not imagined, it’s legit, but I was using it as a plot device).

I don’t know this woman, or anything about her in real life other than that she exists and is married to a man I find attractive and talented. I have no reason to think she’d behave in such a callous manner. And yet, even in a completely fictional scenario, I see her as an impediment, as competition for this man’s affections, so I imagine her being terrible- trying to morally justify wishing their marriage would fall apart.

I like to think of myself as a girls girl. I support other women making their choices and living their best lives, I do my best not to see other women as competition, or buy in to the bullshit of capitalism that makes us compare ourselves to photoshopped pictures of women. And yet, I have no problem making a woman I don’t know out to be terrible in my own fiction because she stands between fake me and a fake version of a man.

As a specific example, it’s not like this woman is ever going to know, or if she did, that my opinion would matter to her. But this was not a one off thought, and it’s got me reflecting on how I treat other women, even inside my own head. I’m not going to beat myself up about it, but I am going to do better.

My favorite thing about witchcraft is that it’s a little bit of faith and a little bit of science! On days when I’m feeling more spiritual, I have a grimoire, on days I’m feeling more analytical, I have a book of scientific tests- and it’s the same dang book! Sometimes the book says, great result this works 10/10 do again if the same results are needed. Sometimes it says, bad idea it went terribly do not do again like this. And it’s all specific to what I want my specific outcomes to be!

Y'all know it's okay to just try stuff in witchcraft, right?

Across the internet, I see a lot of people who seem to be asking for permission to do what they want. While I see some validity in getting wisdom from others, I worry that the people asking these questions might miss out on the experience they could get from going ahead and making a good faith attempt.

"Can I do this spell even if I don't have rosemary?" I don't know. Try it!

"Can I use fruit juice as an offering to my goddess?" I don't know. Ask her!

"Can I include a pocket watch in my magic?" I don't know. See if it works!

Of course, it's not a good idea to jump in and try something that could be harmful, but if you're not hurting yourself or others and you're not appropriating from a closed practice, just give it a go! You're allowed. You're a witch with magic and power and discernment of your own. You don't have to get permission from a bunch of internet strangers. Have fun trying new things!
