Each day of the Ossipoff Tours this past week had an additional stop. One day we stopped at Bachman Hall, one day the Pacific Club, and one day the Goodsill House. But what was also a great stop for us was the Ossipoff Documents at Hamilton Library every day and getting to see the old drawings and renderings. For three days of the National @docomomous Symposium, @timothyaschuler @hawaii_modern and I led “Ossipoff Tours” around the city visiting various houses and buildings designed by Vladimir Ossipoff. These tours were some of the first to sell out, and I’m indebted to John and Tim for coming in and being docents/guides/van drivers all three days. Hard to find people that can literally do it all and not hate me for asking them by the end. Also, couldn’t thank my most favorite place and group enough, @liljestrand_house for hosting tours at their place all three days. They provided docents and kept everyone’s spirits up everyday. It was a great last stop of the tour each day watching the sun set over the view. . The @docomomous National Symposium is finally pau. After a year of planning, meetings, and coordination, our four long days of lectures, events and tours came to a close. It was a lot of work, but when you’re spending the week in some of the best architecture on the island, it’s hard not to take time to smell the flowers. But none of it would have been possible without the best team of volunteers and Modernism enthusiasts. There’s way to many individuals to thank, and I’m personally indebted to many who came and helped. I’ll repay your kindness one day, but know that I’m grateful to all of you for this past week. Now that the sliding doors on the bottom floor open again after decades, this corner has a whole new feel to it. Feels lighter, slimmer, more skeletal. The steel structure being exposed now too adds to the new look as well - humble wood mountain house just got an modern twist. Enjoy every corner of this place. . @liljestrand_house is kind enough to let me bring my third year BEnvD students here every year. This year I brought three times as many, but they were just as gracious of hosts as ever. Extremely grateful for everything they do for not only the legacy of the house, family, and architect, but also what they do for the community. I’ve wanted to get this shot for a while. I’ve been using someone else’s photo whenever I do lectures on the Liljestrand House, and finally had the opportunity to get it. No cars in the driveway (except for the Porsche), the house looking quiet, modest, and mysterious. The driveway coming in on that 3/4 angle, the dense foliage hiding the views, the light coming through the house with peekaboo views of the ocean way beyond. The rustic mountain house will give way to the refined minimalist retreat. . Architectural oddity. This duplex perched on a steep site has the cubist vibes of a California Modern house. But the floor to ceiling jealousies, tropical foliage and indoor outdoor living, makes for a fun treehouse overlooking Honolulu. Apparently there’s no architect attached to it, instead it was the brain child of the Berlin-based artist couple who owned it and built it. Don’t know how much was a remodel and how much was a scrape and rebuild. There’s lots to like about this house, teak floors, tons of glass, and sliding panels in the interior the modulate the spaces. Would definitely be a fun project to have, only thing I’d do is work on some sun shading . They have a cantilevered dining room table that goes from inside the house to outside. Inside, you’re sitting on some rustic old wood chairs. Outside, some pretty awesome Walter Lamb chairs. There’s great furniture everywhere, along with little snippets of art. The petroglyph tiles that wrap the door headers shows up in a few spots on the lanai floor. And greeting you at the front door is a “sacred heart of Jesus” mural done by Charlot. But the materials really make this house special. The red brick floors move inside and out, giving it the feeling of a Mexican courtyard house. And best of all, one wall of the house is clad in hapuu fern roots. Just because. . Because both Charlot and Wimberly were both influenced by different cultures in their work, you can see elements of the house represent them. Elements of the house speak of Charlot’s Mexican roots with the rustic qualities. There’s ties to French Polynesia in some of the artwork and forms of the house. The cantilevered stairs seem very Wimberly, but the rustic ladder and curved plaster walls seem to evoke more of a Charlot vibe. .
