Our first month as an anti-bias school
Our first month as an anti-bias school!
As a new school there are all sorts of things you want to make sure you’re setting groundwork for in the first few weeks, and for me at the top of the list was establishing a good foundation for our anti-bias work. I have written before about some of the age- appropriate things we do with preschool children in anti-bias education. Now that we’re up and running I wanted to share what that’s…

Learning and Growing Together
Learning and Growing Together
Tumblr media
Our beautiful school!
One of the beautiful things about starting a brand new classroom is that we are all learning together; we are all appreciated and valued the way we are, and that we all have things to learn and ways to grow.
It’s been beautiful watching our community growing together, learning our routines and rules, and slowly beginning to learn everyone’s personalities and…

Safety First!
One of the things I’ve thought about during this renovation process is how safe everything in our school is now. New siding, bamboo and tile flooring, new water lines and all the electric updated. It’s gorgeous. I cannot wait to share it once the final touches are added. Everything new, safe, beautiful.
A few weeks ago we noticed something decidedly unsafe in the backyard, though! Up in…

Dear Maria, I'm grateful for your bravery against fascism, your and respect for all children, and your scientific approach, which reminds me to observe first, and learn. 💜 (at Growing Curiosity) https://www.instagram.com/p/B11IJK2FT62/?igshid=1e9joc0inc9hy

Almost there!
Just another week and the building will be complete!
I am excited to say that the renovation is almost complete. We are looking at a week from tomorrow for the completion of the renovation. So much to do, but also so much done. We’ve got flooring and tile and as I type this we’re finishing the electric and plumbing. It’s all coming together!

What is Anti-Bias Education?
What is Anti-Bias Education?
Developmentally children as young as six months notice physical differences such as skin color or differences in tone of voice. By three years old children are asking questions about similarities and differences.
You’ve probably heard a young child call every four-legged animal they see, “doggy!”. We are all exposed to messages, both overt and covert from a young age and some of these…

Care of Self - Montessori Practical Life
Care of Self – Montessori Practical Life
“Any child who is self-sufficient, who can tie his shoes, dress or undress himself, reflects in his joy and sense of achievement the image of human dignity, which is derived from a sense of independence.”
(Maria Montessori, The Child in the Family)
Shoe tying is a very complex task!
One type of practical life exercise is the set of activities known as care of self. Care of self can be…

What could be more patriotic?
What could be more patriotic?
For the fourth of July my family decided to celebrate by protesting our country’s immigration policies that are cruelly impacting families seeking asylum in our country.
Tumblr media
Demonstrating is one way to show our administration we do not approve.
I call my representatives and write letters, and donate to organizations like RAICES and Corazon, as well as some local shelters for immigrants, but…
