I think being a vampire inherently makes you desire companionship and you’ll naturally pick those you love like how Mary turned Stack and he turned Annie and try to turn his brother as well. I think true free will came after Remmick died. I simply believe it was like Annie said their souls are still within them just trapped. Personally I believe vampirism is a metaphor for cultural appropriation. The KKK is definitely the main villain but Remmick was still an antagonist he wanted his culture above all else and became to the Jukejoint guests what the Catholic were to him. I don’t think he was I’ll intentioned but he did only use the culture of those he turned when beneficial to him (like when he used Bo’s language to sexually harass Grace or when he sung Pick Poor Robin Clean (a blues song) but without soul, he wanted Sammie’s soul and ability). He made himself the center when he sung his authentic Irish music unlike Sammi who brought back the past spirits of all the guests.
I think the vampires all think it’s awesome because they’re on a combination of adrenaline and Remmick’s influence. I saw the gold as showing us how old he truly was and to hint at the beginning that he was the vampire because he couldn’t handle silver.
I think after Remmick died Mary and Stack had a sense of free will but were still stuck and could never mature. This is why they hadn’t felt free since the night at the Jukejoint they have no soul within them anymore and try to emulate it through Sammi’s records, he reminded them of their lost humanity.
what does the vampirism in sinners represent? there’s a lot to talk about with the movie but one thing that I found pretty odd (SPOILERS FOLLOW) was how sympathetically the irish vampire guy was portrayed compared to say, the villainous humans in the story. the film doesn’t really say why the state of being a vampire is “bad” outside of like, i guess your soul being stuck on earth.
i guess there’s the question of free will. do the Black characters affected by vampirism still have free will, or are they being affected by the Irish guy’s influence? it seems like Stack still had free will, even when the irish guy was still alive. does that mean everybody had free will? was being a vampire just that awesome, that the second you get turned you say “wow, I don’t even know what I was complaining about, this is great.” because if so, then the worst thing the irish guy does is like. selfishly wanting to speak to his ancestors. the kkk people are way worse.
then at the very very end, when we finally see Stack, it seems like he’s got it all figured out. being a vampire seems like it worked out super well for him. so what is vampirism, in the text of the movie? is it like selling your soul for money? i mean maybe. the irish dude did have gold. are they saying that being a vampire is sort of like “feeding” on the system? as in, you do sort of get to escape the system, but constantly at someone else’s expense. like vampirism is a metaphor for capitalist success maybe? I’m probably overthinking it. But if you read all this and have any ideas, feel free to let me know in the replies
#sinners#hannah speaks ღ#sorry went on a tangent I just love this movie#I tried to respond to each aspect but it’s all over the place#sorry if this makes no sense I didn’t reread this and I wrote it while walking

True I guess I would call it more of a story of infatuation rather than fully fleshed out love story.
This seems to be an unpopular opinion on this app, but I don’t think Mary and Stack were meant to be a love story like yes they had love for each other, but it was more obsession on Mary’s part. They were both selfish Stack didn’t care about what Mary wanted when he married her to a white man, but she also ignored the danger her simply being in their space put everyone in.
Mary literally tells Stack to rot in hell and he tells her that he will and he’ll save her a spot. Mary was damned to hell and brought Stack right along with her. Stack admits to not feeling free since the night he was bit.
The twins were meant to be foils of each other. Smoke got his genuine love story with Annie. He was able to give her up and let her be free rather than hold onto her forever and damn her to suffering.
#neither of them allowed it to mature at all and now it can never mature because they can never grow#hannah speaks ღ#sinners

Edit: since I didn’t mention this and a lot of people are bringing this up when I say not a love story I mean not the traditional or healthy love story. They definitely loved each other but it never matured and it damned both of them. I believe their love story was still a love story it was just also a cautionary tale meant to foil the love Annie and Smoke let breathe and grow

Sinners who so good the scene where Remmick is forcefully baptizing Sammi and reciting scripture and he realizes that God won’t save him just like it didn’t save Remmick but instead his guitar (the music and his power as a griot) saves him.
