Our apprentices watering their hanging container gardens This kind of vertical gardening eases the chore of watering each and every container by allowing the water to drip from the top bottle into the ones under it through drilled holes. #gulaysabarangay #barangaytumana #urbangardening #containergardening #innovation

New greenhouse built today our apprentices: 9 beneficiaries of the 4Ps endorsed by DSWD to render 40 days of service with salary as form of cash-for-work. Instead of doing menial tasks, joining an apprenticeship program in Gulay sa Barangay will help them gain knowledge and skills in urban gardening, and eventually become skilled gardeners ready for hiring. #gulaysabarangay #barangaytumana

Old tarpaulin can also be turned into container gardens! Holes are cut out from the sides instead of from below in order to retain just enough water to sustain the plant during hot and drier days. #gulaysabarangay #barangaytumana #recycle #donateph #containergardening

Tawa-tawa is a local fastgrowing weed that can treat Dengue with its antiviral and antiinflammatory properties and ability to increase the blood platelet count. During the rainy seasons, cases of dengue significantly increases especially in lowlying areas where floodwater is left undrained. Barangay Tumana is also close to the river, making it more vulnerable to mosquito-related diseases #tawatawa #organic #herbalmedicine #dengue #urbangardening #gulaysabarangay #barangaytumana

Mixing and enriching soil for container gardening: members of MESAU were taught the importance of nurturing and feeding the soil with organic material as well as keeping it moist to benefit the microorganisms in the soil, thus, helping it produce compost and fertilizers. The participants experienced holding vermicast (earthworm droppings), and mixed it with garden soil, ricehull (to hold water) and ground charcoal.

The quality of soil is crucial in gardening especially in container gardens where all the nutrients needed by the plants will be sourced solely from what the farmer puts into the container. In #GulaysaBarangay soil composition and mixing is one of the most important lessons taught to the urban farmers. #urbangardening #barangaytumana #soil #soilmixing #volunteerph #donateph #community #sustainability #organic #livelihood
