What’s up with the dog in the park??? I must say, this may be one of the coolest stories since I’ve been Mayor. About a year ago, a gentleman by the name of Winston Cavendish made an appointment and came to see me at city hall. We visited for about an hour and I was extremely impressed by his life stories. He is now 82 years old and lives in Lacombe. However, he was with the Mandeville Police Department many years ago. Let’s now go back to the 1980s for a minute. Any 80s kid (like me) will certainly remember “McGruff” the Crime Dog and especially the accompanying slogan “Let’s take a bite out of crime!” McGruff the Crime Dog was a national anti-crime character for kids. Mr. Cavendish proceeded to tell me McGruff was his idea and his creation. So a kid’s character that went national in the 1980s was created by a Mandeville Police officer, right here in Mandeville!!! Cavendish even showed me pictures of himself, McGruff, and President Ronald Reagan at the White House!
