Short Script Update & SEO Bait

I've got a lot of day-job coming up this week, but I wanted to get some screenwriting news out there: Found out this week that the second “Short” script I ever wrote, THE STEWARD, just won the BEST DARK COMEDY award at the Oregon Short Film Festival. Woo-Hoo!   Also learned that the same script is an Official Selection at the Portland Comedy Film Festival. While I’m reviving several web sites that I’ve established (and then neglected) over the years, I'm also going to be working on my SEO and overall Day-Job (and Screenwriting) promotion.   So, if you find me by one of these outlying websites, please let me know.  I’m very interested in what ends up getting before people’s eyes. NINE YEARS LATER UPDATE: The strange case of the headlines “What’s In a Name?” & “The Name Game”

Nine years ago, I put up a post here about how there are only two headlines allowed for a business or language or Sociology article about the Naming Business. I have been a professional Name Consultant and Namer for 24 years, and it never fails to amaze me how the headline writers of newspapers, magazines, and webpages can have such an incredibly narrow a range of ideas when it comes to a serious discussion of this strange, interesting business I’m in.   In that article, I mentioned that a writer might dream up a new angle on this ever-evolving business, but they need not worry about the headline - it’ll be one of those two.  When my Naming Mentor and pal Nancy Friedman (www.wordworking.com) (@Fritinancy) recently posted an interesting article about naming sports teams that continued that grand tradition, I looked back at that old post - and of course, many of the links were now dead.  But I did not doubt for a moment that I’d have no trouble publishing an update.   And I didn’t.  Searching <“What’s In a Name?” article> finds 3.4 BILLION pages.  Editors - maybe some day, try and think up perhaps a THIRD headline for these stories - and if you can’t, maybe you should call Nancy!  Or Me! ~ MG 3.30.2020 Here’s ten of each, right off the first few of BILLION of internet pages: https://www.emotivebrand.com/brand-naming-expert/ https://www.salon.com/1999/11/30/naming/

SMITE-Y CHEESY

KRAFT has a funny, interesting series of ads trying to lend a little, er, romance to what is a pretty dry line: packaged stove-top dinners - which they've named "Cheesy Skillets". There are lots of print ads in the campaign, but one bit of copy in a magazine ad in the series seemed a bit odd to me.

In the words of Inigo from "The Princess Bride" - 'You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.' Now, I learn new word meanings every day, so I was open to the idea that maybe there was a definition of smite I wasn't familiar with.  Here's what I found: Strike or hit hard, as with a hand, stick, or weapon To strike down, slay, injure. To afflict with a deadly or disastrous effect, to punish Attack or affect severely. Archaic: defeat or conquer. The only charming or attractive meaning is when it's used ironically to describe the effects of Cupid's arrow: Charlie Brown was smitten by the red-haired girl. This tagline gives me a mental image of a crazed berserker, clubbing a nice, cheesy casserole senseless on the kitchen floor.

A Tribute to Tribute Bands' Band Names

Sure, it's fun to discuss the origins and meanings of Band Names.  Just look at Minus the Bear! But to get *really* meta, consider the names of some tribute bands.  A tribute band is a group of musicians that decides to crack the nut of show business by giving a performance that is supposed to be a re-creation of another, more famous band.  The idea is not to deceive, but rather, to re-create an experience for the biggest fans, who can never get enough.  The circuit was pioneered by tributes to KISS, whose extreme visual stylings and full-face make-up (and easy-to-learn music!), combined with the most rabid fans on the planet,  made them a natural for visual and sonic re-creation.  I may do a whole post just about KISS tribute names, which are a genre unto themselves.  In the non-KISS caregory, here's some of my favorites:
