Poster composition about Gotham typeface.
A Brief Presentation
Gotham is a typeface designed by Tobias Frere-Jones (Hoefler & Frere-Jones) in 2000. It was commissionated by GQ magazine seeking a “masculine, new and fresh” typeface. Gotham was designed to be a modern type, inspired by post-war building signage of New York City, later on used at many place as Obama’s campaign, Coca-Cola, Saturday Night Live, Conan and Spotify. The typeface has no modulation, vertical axis, apparently circular “o”, high x-height and small ascenders and descenders. Those features made “Gotham” a geometric sans-serif. Tobias Frere-Jones claimed that Gotham has a geometrical construction closer to what an engineer would make. The Gotham characteristcs made it easy to be used in comercial areas because it can be perceived either as elegant and sophisticate or simple and readable typeface.
