took me four days to realize the underlines weren’t showing and by then i’d already been cited on the deltarune wiki. oh no.
i've been reading your posts on deltarune's jp text, interesting stuff, ty for the work. i got a question tho, can you elaborate more on the unused text's speaking being childish? like, how young are we talking? cuz it seems like dess went missing as a teenager, so if the text is like, small child age then it seems like whoever the text is can't be dess
hi! i think this was described in one of the sources that my chapter 2 post linked, but for posterity:
the unused text has been noted to have feminine or childish speaking patterns. these include:
not ending sentences with the copula “da” (だ, rough equivalent to “is”, “are”, or “it’s”)
ending questions with the particle “の”
using particles like “wa” (は) and “ga” (が) less frequently
explaining why these patterns are feminine/childish would take a while and is not really in the scope of this question. if you want to look further into it, i’d recommend you start with this tofugu article.
…actually, looking back over this article, the unused text speaks in an even more gender-neutral way than i suspected. we’ll get into that.
also, it should be noted that most fem japanese speakers don’t actually speak in a very feminine manner, though it’s much more common in fiction for female characters to speak this way.
here is the unused text from every chapter. parts that follow these patterns have been made bold, and parts that go against these patterns have been italicized:
chapter 1:
ここは… どこ…? ねえ…誰か… 誰か…いないの? ねえってば! 誰か答えてよ! … 暗いよ… 真っ暗だ… お��い… 誰か… 聞こえてるなら… なにか…言ってよ…
you can see that these rules are already not very exact, as the speaker uses the copula “da” near the end. they also use the particle “wa” in a sentence where it could have been omitted to sound more feminine.
chapter 2:
誰にも 聞こえてない… そうなんでしょ…? … やっぱり。 自分でも 自分の声が 聞こえているのかよくわからない。 ここは とても静かだ… …なのにときどき なにか聞こえる… 気のせいじゃない… なにか… カリカリいう音…?
using “da” and “wa” again, but otherwise using very few particles and sentence enders.
chapter 3:
ここは いったい なんだろう…? どうして 迷い込んだんだろう? …ずっと考えているけど わからない。 あの夢は… 何度も 見た。 闇の中へ 歩いていく夢。 とびらから 光が差していて… そのとびらが 背後で ピシャリと閉じて… あたりは 真っ暗になる。 …これは あの悪夢なの? …それとも それ以外が 全部 夢?
now the dialogue sounds significantly more neutral than feminine. i’m not sure if this is actually a significant change, or if it’s just because the speaker is saying more complete sentences.
chapter 4:
時間の感覚が なくなってきた。 何日? 何時間? 何年もたったといわれたら きっと信じてしまう… 前は 太陽がのぼって… たくさんの すばらしいことが起きて 時間には意味があった。 朝ごはん… 夜ふかしして見るテレビ… ここでは… もう 食べもしないし 飲みもしない。 目が覚めているのか 夢を見ているのかもわからない。 死んでいるのか 生きているのかも。 真っ暗な静寂しかない。 …ただ あの音がする。 ときどき聞こえる 引っかくような音。 信じてもらえないかもしれないけど…この声は だれにも 届いていないかもしれないけど… あの音を聞くたびに この声が だれかに 届いている気がする。 聞いてくれている人… 聞こえているなら… ありがとう。

it’s with this one that i’ve started to wonder if the gender of the speaker is being intentionally obscured. they haven’t used a first-person pronoun (meaning “i” or “me”; these usually indicate femininity or masculinity, depending on the one used)—it isn’t exactly uncommon to usually omit those in japanese, but at this point it’s a tiny bit conspicuous, especially with them saying “I feel like this voice (この声, kono koe) is reaching someone” instead of “my voice”, which would require them to use a first-person pronoun.
i was not the first person to come up with the idea that the unused text used feminine/childish speech patterns, but it became embedded into my idea of the text, especially after researching for the chapter 2 post i made last year. it should be mentioned that said post is over a year old at this point, and that i have improved greatly at japanese translation since then, so i feel okay with saying that i was wrong to believe that, that the unused text speaks in a generally gender-neutral manner, and that they are likely supposed to have an unclear gender.
i do still think the unused text is 100% dess though.

Looking at the Next Episode
This will be the second and final episode of the Nakazawa arc. The first episodes he took charge of in “Gavv” are very essential ones.
Dente’s voice actor, Yohei Tadano, has been touched on in prior “The Episode in Short” sections, but in the show “Chōkō Sentai Changelion” (1996!), he acted some monsters, as well as characters out of suit, at the time. From my knowledge (theory) of how casting voice actors for tokusatsu programs works, people are able to give better performances if they are familiar with live-action. …So, we often choose people who have done stage shows, or who have a lot of experience in dubbing. In “Den-O”, Toshihiko Seki had been doing his life’s work in stage shows all the time, and [Koji] Yusa and [Masaki] Terasoma had done a lot of dubbing already. (What is this, Den-O behind-the-scenes?) Asanuma was also great as Juran. (He’s also in an acting troupe) It also feels like he can synchronize quickly with the suit actors.
Dente is played by a veteran suit actor, Jiro Okamoto. When we decide on suit actors, we consult with Action Director Fujita. Fujita had the thought that “Jiro could help Chinen and support him”, which led to him being cast. Dente appeared for a long stretch of episodes, but I think Dente became a lovable character thanks to the help of those two actors. “Even Though I Searched for You” might be a thought of Dente’s, who wanted to taste his last sweets. Next episode, Rakia’s feelings will progress with another big step. And naturally, a new form will appear! Please do not miss it.

Uncle Dente’s Wish
He’s probably the oldest character in the story, but Uncle Dente is like a mischievous, spoiled kid.

He’s been the cause of many mishaps, but he’s somehow hard to dislike. It’s a result of Jiro Okamoto’s and Yohei Tadano’s well-coordinated acting.

Rakia tries to use his imagination for Dente’s story of a wish for a sweets tour. (It’s cute how they all look upwards)
The parfait full of strawberries was created by the prop masters. Through the filming of “Gavv”, the staff members’ sweets skills and wealth of knowledge has steadily grown. For example, when putting something on a person, they chose wheat flour over rice flour to make it easier to clean up. I hope that there will be shows in the future where this knowledge is useful (Laugh).

Is Rakia’s imagination really that strong…?! The special forces were dispatched to deal with Dente. The soldiers that encircle him were played by members of Japan Action Enterprise. The commanding officer is Naoya Iguchi, a favorite of the kashiwamochi world (?) [??????]. As he launched an attack on Jiro, Dente’s actor who is greatly his senior, a tense feeling was drifting through the filming set (Laugh).
Rakia was unaware of Dente’s poor condition. He might have also blamed himself for not stepping in quickly enough when Comel got addicted to Dark Snacks.

Rakia’s face is painful to look at as he criticizes himself. Sachika’s arm movements aren’t too tight even when pushing him away, because there’s something she wants him to do! Her radiance is incredible. I’m glad that Rakia started working at the Happy Parade~~ (Cries).
By the way, we started making Rakia’s character song while this arc was in post-production, but in regards to Comel’s case, he’s a person that Rakia thought was close to him but slipped out of his hands, and a person he couldn’t save in time. Deriving from that idea, we asked for a song with “hands” as a theme throughout. With tentacles, bad hands that he accidentally played, and hands reaching out to him, it becomes somewhat of a key word. A feeling of self-deprecation is also present. When listening to it after episodes 39 and 40, it might resonate in a different way than before. Please listen to it as many times as you like (this was all an advertisement!) The Nakazawa Arc Initiation?!
One common trait of Nakazawa arcs is having sweet conversations with sharp cuts. The comedy in the first Dente cave scene is strong and idyllic, but…

Oh! Not many comedy scenes have come along in “Gavv” so far! And the last ray of hope on this day, Hanto, who has unusually exaggerated facial expressions, isn’t here! (Laugh) Can he respond to the request to “get close to Rakia here and do something”?!

On that note, these two are hurrying to a briefing session (cute…!) They were told to “remember the Televi-kun energy” and similar things by the on-site staff, but it was difficult to tell if they went too far (Laugh).
Oh, I heard that you can apply for Televi-kun’s bonus Kamen Rider Gavv Hyper Battle DVD, “With Strange Snack Gourmet, Woo! My Wakamen!” with the postcard inside “Televi-kun June, July, and August editions” which are currently on sale? I have to watch that~ 🍜 (That was another advertisement!)

Rakia’s arms are also long (obviously). There’s a kind of habit of saying “hooray!” on set. He was doing his best to squeeze it out with Shoma and Sachika. Well, Mister Shoji was originally greedy with how often he laughed, so occasionally he gets a little eager to do so while acting and has to get helped out (Laugh).

Great job.
Shoji also worked with Director Nakazawa in “Ten Gokaiger” (Please look for Takamichi on the Blu-ray and by streaming it!). It’s been about four years since then, and he was trustworthy for the director, who said, “He’s bringing his best to the set,” and “He’s gotten really good”. ✨

For the scenes when Rakia sees Dente’s terrible state and chases after Glotta, Director Nakazawa actively consulted Shoji on whether Rakia should take off his hat and where he puts it if he does so.
Next, the Happy Parade works hard to make an a la mode. Even here, there’s cute chatter while they prepare it. Even while being confused on how to make cream that doesn’t have too many bubbles, Rakia gave it his best effort, and entrusted the fruit cutting to Shoma

The Gochizos acting out how each fruit is cut carry a strong essence of Director Nakazawa.

Imitating the shapes of the things being cut is a truly valuable form of coordinated gymnastics.
Usually, we often put in the voiceovers ahead of time, even if the visuals will be added in composition (doing voiceovers while on asphalt is an all-too-familiar story for the Gochizo voice actors), but for this scene, the voice acting team added their voices again after the visuals had been finished. They’re putting all their energy into it. The impression that the Gochizos tend to overdo it like this is increasing!

Rakia is obedient to Sachika while looking satisfied with how the cream turned out, and Shoma cunningly steals food. Is this some kind of amazing teamwork…?!
Glotta the Terrifying
Lizel is way too good at finding a person’s sore points. She says that Glotta is the most unsteady in the family, and that was a little bit hurtful to Glotta. (Laughs)

Jiip is on a chopping board… no, that’s a medical treatment platform. He doesn’t know when Nyelv is being serious, and he’s being manipulated by Lizel… Jiip’s worries are never-ending. I’m sure these things have been thought to be particularly meaningless when told to Glotta.
The one who sees into Glotta’s heart is Uncle Dente, who had been separated from her for a long time. The nature of each character has been well-seen.

Even when Dente correctly guesses the circumstances she’s in, Glotta doesn’t firmly recognize them. She swings her sickle, and leads herself into further isolation.

Thank you for everything, Dente. It was foreshadowed multiple times, but still…
By the way, Glotta’s character song was under production at the same time as Rakia’s. This one was dedicated to a supremacy of strength, saying that getting involved with Dark Snacks is reaping what you sow, and that those who get addicted will only be used. It’s a stance that deliberately lacks reflective elements, as she refuses to acknowledge her flaws. Rakia sees Dente’s wound and lunges at Glotta first, initiating the biggest club fight of the century. He’s confident in his strength, but he’s overwhelmed by Glotta the whole time.

In both the sickle duel and the pro wrestling duel (where pinning techniques are employed), Glotta remains the referee’s favorite.
This fight-club champion packs a powerful punch.

Just when you wonder why they can’t just transform into their Granute forms, they do that [?] (Laugh). With this sequence brimming with the cast members’ zeal and ideas from Action Director Fujita, the scene became incredibly exciting!
It was striking how Chitose didn’t have much experience with action scenes, but she would try one movement over and over again until it was committed to muscle memory in rehearsals beforehand. Also, Glotta’s costume has many parts with skin exposed, which gives her fairly good breathability, but for the many outdoor location scenes filmed in the dead of winter, she needed to have astounding levels of concentration.
The character is very different in personality and appearance from the real person (When Chitose came to scenes that she wasn’t in without makeup on, the on-site staff, including the director, didn’t realize it was her LOL). Her approaches to Glotta in the movie and events are amazing as well.
Gavv rushes in and manages to briefly drive her away with an attack, but…
By the way, in this scene, Glotta is blown somewhere far away in Granute form, cutting down trees. Those stage directions seem to be a favorite of Action Director Fujita’s. (Laugh)
What direction will Rakia’s battle take next time? Make sure to watch until the end!

The Japanese Version of Deltarune Chapters 3 & 4
last year i made a post covering aspects of deltarune chapter 2’s japanese localization that i hadn’t seen others talk about. people seemed to like it! and i liked making it as well, so now that chapters 3 and 4 are out, i’ve looked at the japanese text for them to see if i could find anything interesting.
and… yep i did.
since i’m one of the first english fans to look at the new japanese text in this manner, there’s a lot that i skimmed over or just straight up didn’t read, as a decent amount of dialogue is jumbled or shoved under “scr_text”. i mainly focused on the lore-important segments, since there aren’t as many character voices or jokes with interesting translations as there were in chapter 2… with two exceptions.
tenna
tenna is generally pretty well localized. i didn’t translate a lot of his dialogue, but 8-4 has done a pretty outstanding job of making tenna sound like a japanese TV host. for example, the narration to his intro video is translated from this:
It's now time for our feature presentation FEACHER Coming straight from your house Coming straight from YOUR house! He's the One He's GROOVY and NEVER glooby! You can't get this from an EGG! The sensation of your screen The show that makes you scream Say it with him, folks!
to this:
大変オマタセいたしました! (Thank you for waiting so long!) はぢまるヨ! (Lettuce begin!) アナタの おうちから お届け! (Delivered from your house!) アナタの! おうちから! お届け!(Delivered! From! Your! they didn’t need to intentionally misspell the line that replaced “FEACHER” but they did and i love that.
a lot of lines like these were translated to be more in the style of japanese television, and that’s awesome. i really admire the effort, and the shift is palpable even to me, who isn’t fluent in japanese at all.

others have already been curious about how “YOUR TAKING TOO LONG” and its variations are translated— in fact, this youtube video that i found beat me to the punch with covering it.
jack uses a mixture of hiragana and katakana (no kanji), refers to himself in the third person, misspells things (mostly using ワ for the particle “wa” instead of は), and occasionally uses emoticons. all of these give a strange but fairly childish impression.

and here’s how his iconic phrases were translated:

i looked at raise up your bat’s lyrics to see if there was any extra lore behind them. there wasn’t, but… ralsei’s replacement lyrics are pretty funny in this version. here are the full lyrics

i didn’t find many changes in the text of the chapter 3 and 4 “unused�� text (otherwise known as “the voice in the code”), but i noticed that their dialogue sounds a little less feminine/childish compared to in chapter 1. maybe. it does seem like a lot of time has passed. idk
edit: actually, after looking back at all the unused text, it seems like they’ve been always more gender-neutral than i previously assumed.
prophecy
a few changes to the prophecy lines stood out to me.
THE THIRD HERO. A PRINCE, ALONE IN DEEPEST DARK. (eng) The third hero / A lonely prince living in the depths of darkness (jp)
reference to “depths”. nothing of note besides that
THE FLOWER MAN, TRAPPED IN ASYLUM. (eng) The flower man is captive in a facility (jp)
this is the word used to replace “asylum” here. take it as you will:

and the one i found by far the most interesting…
LOVE WILL FIND THE GIRL. (eng) The girl will learn the true meaning of love. (jp)
huh????? what the fuck does that mean??
also, the word for “love” used in japanese is 愛, which refers to any kind of love. so no double meaning here, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of an intended double meaning in english, as the japanese translation of undertale has often had to erase intended double meanings that were not translatable, like “determination”.
addendum: As you know,
i’m editing the post to add this in because i forgot that it’s important.
you know the carol line where she says YOU in bright red text and no one knows whether she’s talking to kris or the player? well, luckily, japanese usually omits the word “you” in place of a person’s actual name, so hopefully looking at the japanese version of the line should—

she just uses the word for “you”.
this just makes it more evident that it is meant to be unclear who she’s speaking to.
CONCLUSION
wow that’s it. that’s a lot less than i expected there to be, but again, the game is translated pretty faithfully and there aren’t as many jokes that had to be localized in these two chapters. if you notice anything or want me to translate specific text, don’t be afraid to ask! i’ll be happy to answer any questions and help people out.

it’s with this one that i’ve started to wonder if the gender of the speaker is being intentionally obscured. they haven’t used a first-person pronoun (meaning “i” or “me”; these usually indicate femininity or masculinity, depending on the one used)—it isn’t exactly uncommon to usually omit those in japanese, but at this point it’s a tiny bit conspicuous, especially with them saying “I feel like this voice (この声, kono koe) is reaching someone” instead of “my voice”, which would require them to use a first-person pronoun.
i was not the first person to come up with the idea that the unused text used feminine/childish speech patterns, but it became embedded into my idea of the text, especially after researching for the chapter 2 post i made last year. it should be mentioned that said post is over a year old at this point, and that i have improved greatly at japanese translation since then, so i feel okay with saying that i was wrong to believe that, that the unused text speaks in a generally gender-neutral manner, and that they are likely supposed to have an unclear gender.
i do still think the unused text is 100% dess though.

The Japanese Version of Deltarune Chapters 3 & 4
last year i made a post covering aspects of deltarune chapter 2’s japanese localization that i hadn’t seen others talk about. people seemed to like it! and i liked making it as well, so now that chapters 3 and 4 are out, i’ve looked at the japanese text for them to see if i could find anything interesting.
and… yep i did.
since i’m one of the first english fans to look at the new japanese text in this manner, there’s a lot that i skimmed over or just straight up didn’t read, as a decent amount of dialogue is jumbled or shoved under “scr_text”. i mainly focused on the lore-important segments, since there aren’t as many character voices or jokes with interesting translations as there were in chapter 2… with two exceptions.
tenna
tenna is generally pretty well localized. i didn’t translate a lot of his dialogue, but 8-4 has done a pretty outstanding job of making tenna sound like a japanese TV host. for example, the narration to his intro video is translated from this:
It's now time for our feature presentation FEACHER Coming straight from your house Coming straight from YOUR house! He's the One He's GROOVY and NEVER glooby! You can't get this from an EGG! The sensation of your screen The show that makes you scream Say it with him, folks!
to this:

they didn’t need to intentionally misspell the line that replaced “FEACHER” but they did and i love that.
a lot of lines like these were translated to be more in the style of japanese television, and that’s awesome. i really admire the effort, and the shift is palpable even to me, who isn’t fluent in japanese at all.

others have already been curious about how “YOUR TAKING TOO LONG” and its variations are translated— in fact, this youtube video that i found beat me to the punch with covering it. (edit: this one provides a comparison between languages, which is very nice)
jack uses a mixture of hiragana and katakana (no kanji), refers to himself in the third person, misspells things (mostly using ワ for the particle “wa” instead of は), and occasionally uses emoticons. all of these give a strange but fairly childish impression.

i looked at raise up your bat’s lyrics to see if there was any extra lore behind them. there wasn’t, but… ralsei’s replacement lyrics are pretty funny in this version. here are the full lyrics

i didn’t find many changes in the text of the chapter 3 and 4 “unused” text (otherwise known as “the voice in the code”), but i noticed that their dialogue sounds a little less feminine/childish compared to in chapter 1. maybe. it does seem like a lot of time has passed. idk
edit: actually, after looking back at all the unused text, it seems like they’ve been always more gender-neutral than i previously assumed.
prophecy
a few changes to the prophecy lines stood out to me.
THE THIRD HERO. A PRINCE, ALONE IN DEEPEST DARK. (eng) The third hero / A lonely prince living in the depths of darkness (jp)
reference to “depths”. nothing of note besides that

LOVE WILL FIND THE GIRL. (eng) The girl will learn the true meaning of love. (jp)
huh????? what the fuck does that mean??
also, the word for “love” used in japanese is 愛, which refers to any kind of love. so no double meaning here, but that doesn’t rule out the possibility of an intended double meaning in english, as the japanese translation of undertale has often had to erase intended double meanings that were not translatable, like “determination”.
addendum: As you know,
i’m editing the post to add this in because i forgot that it’s important.
you know the carol line where she says YOU in bright red text and no one knows whether she’s talking to kris or the player? well, luckily, japanese usually omits the word “you” in place of a person’s actual name, so hopefully looking at the japanese version of the line should—

this just makes it more evident that it is meant to be unclear who she’s speaking to.
CONCLUSION
wow that’s it. that’s a lot less than i expected there to be, but again, the game is translated pretty faithfully and there aren’t as many jokes that had to be localized in these two chapters. if you notice anything or want me to translate specific text, don’t be afraid to ask! i’ll be happy to answer any questions and help people out.

working on a post like this for the new chapters!
The Japanese Version of Deltarune
about a week ago i decided to translate japanese deltarune because i was curious and bored. i found a lot of stuff that i haven’t heard anyone talk about before!
i only translated chapter 2 because i got to the cliffs and remembered that watching/playing chapter 1 over and over again is really boring to me. might do it when/if i finish writing the post.
uhhh a few warnings. i’m not fluent in japanese whatsoever (i’m like n4 level? i think?), and i might not explain this very well to people who don’t know anything about the language. if you’re confused about anything i say, just ask and i’ll explain it in better detail.
i got all of the gameplay from tsuwahasu’s playthroughs of chapter 2 (pacifist and weird route), so all of the screenshots will be from his vods. i picked his vod to watch somewhat randomly so i was very surprised when he not only got all the easter eggs/secrets on a blind playthrough besides the egg room, but also beat spamton neo in one try, god damn
also i’m not the first person to look at the jp version of deltarune. please look at these posts/videos if you want to see stuff that’s already known in better detail:

NOW.
LET US BEGIN.
first things first. the gonermaker sequence is one of the most well-known differences in the japanese language among lore fanatics like myself.
in japanese, the first character speaking to you (gaster/Geoff) speaks in kanji (normal) and katakana instead of hiragana (not normal, incredibly strange sounding). the character who hijacks the gonermaker at the end speaks differently, with kanji and hiragana (normal). as suzyundertale mentions in their post, the patterns are extremely similar to a certain fallen child from the end of the undertale genocide route.
another well-known lore Thing in the japanese version is that the hidden “scrapped” lines (AKA the person trapped in the code) use very feminine and childlike speaking mannerisms. this makes it very likely that the person is dess holiday
i’m not going to be going over much personal pronoun stuff, because other people have already covered most of that, though i haven’t seen one thing mentioned by anyone else:
seam uses the pronoun “atashi” (あたし), which is normally a very girly pronoun but in this case it’s meant to make them seem old and wise, since it was a more common pronoun in olden times. their other mannerisms are gender neutral and not feminine, but their name is localized to “nui” (ヌイ)— the word for “seam” in japanese, as well as an actual feminine given name.

does the use of “atashi” combined with having a fem name confirm that they are female? i’m 95% sure the answer is no. do those two things lead native japanese speakers to believe that they are female? i have no idea.
light and dark world
skellfamily mentioned all of this in the post i linked, but i have something small to add
undertale uses mainly hiragana in its text for the japanese version, with some small exceptions for when the fourth wall is broken. this is referencing earthbound, which also did this. this carries over to the light world of deltarune, but kanji is used liberally in the dark world. this is explained by toby fox wanting the light world to make the player think deltarune would be like undertale.

small jokes and stuff in the localization
the “librarby” misspelling joke carries over, with it being named “toshonka” (the japanese word for library is “toshokan”).

the AGREE2ALL puzzle was changed to say “YEEES20!!”. this can be read as “yes ni maru” (with the number 2 being read as “ni” in jp and “maru” being the word for a circle), meaning “yes to all” just like in english!

the “apple” keyboard puzzle still says “apple” though ralsei mentions that apple means “ringo” (the japanese word for apple) if you talk to him for a hint.
funnily enough, this joke was kept as is! (“kris, type as i say. f…” “…un!”)

the tasque’s battle lines in english are binary codes, with “me” being 0 and “ow” being 1. this is similar in jp. “nyan” is the equivalent of “meow” in that language, so “ny”=0 and “an”=1. cute!

probably my favorite joke in the entire japanese version: in english, before the berdly fight on the roller coaster, he incorrectly refers to lightners as “Light Nerds” . in japanese this is changed to make him use ateji (a combination of kanji that doesn’t mean anything but sounds like an already existing word with their combined readings), calling the lightners 雷斗奈悪 (raitonaa, phonetically similar to the transliteration raitonā which the translation uses). it has the exact same effect (of berdly trying to sound smart but actually being very incorrect), but it’s localized in an outstanding way

“you are filled with the power of not knowing what sugarplums are” is changed to “you are filled with the power of not knowing what christmas pudding is”.

when berdly incorrectly calls susie “susan”, she says “who’s susan?” instead of “my name isn’t susan”. japanese people likely don’t know that “susie” is usually short for “susan”, so it makes sense for her to be even more confused in this version.

the spelling contest in berdly’s flashback is still an english spelling contest, with berdly specifying that it’s english.

instead of saying “susie… a real dragon blazers reference?!” when susie references dragon blazers 2, berdly says, “susie… you’re… a serious dragon blazers player…?!”
on that topic, dragon blazers is instead called dragon blader in japanese. was it called that the whole time? am i misremembering? i legitimately don’t know

the ice-e keysmash puzzle is changed so that you can type it out in japanese as すふぎおろてにぺけなも. it still does not mean anything.

right after susie referenced godzilla with the susiezilla line on the ferris wheel, she references ANOTHER tokusatsu. i think. here (while about to fall on ralsei) she says “ore, sanjou!!!!” (i arrive!), which is a famous catchphrase from kamen rider den-o. i’m like 85% sure it was an intentional reference. den-o is one of my favorite rider shows so this is amazing to me

and lastly. the name of minecrap is changed to マインクシャット (mainkushatto), which seems to be a play on some word plus “minecraft” like in english. i’m not sure what the wordplay is. i’ll get back to you on this
lore-y important stuff
about dess
in japanese, the december typing puzzle still spells out “december” in english.
noelle refers to dess as “onee-chan” (older sis)— it’s common for japanese people to refer to their older siblings like this, and it would be extremely weird if noelle called her “dess”. she could have called her “dess-neechan” or some variation of that, but i highly doubt that the name “dess” is being obscured, especially because “dess” transliterated would sound extremely close, if not alike to “desu” as well as the transliteration of “death”.
the knight

this line from a swatchling says something like “it captures the moment where the ‘knight’ creates a ‘fountain’ themself, with their own hands”, but the word for “themself” (みずから/mizukara) is written in hiragana, and “mizukara” could also technically be read as “from water”. was this a deliberate water-darkness parallel? i have no idea.
speaking of water!
the roaring knight is referred to as “咆哮の騎士” (houkou no kishi), the knight of the roaring. the word for the roaring itself, 咆哮, means roar or scream. which eliminates the alternate meaning of roaring (also being possibly defined as the sound of rushing water), but that probably doesn’t solidify “roaring” as solely meaning that. there are a lot of terms in undertale that had multiple meanings, but had to be changed to have only one in the japanese localization. “roaring” might be similar to those instances.
angel
spamton calls noelle an angel just like in english, referring to her as “angel-chan”. if there’s somehow anyone out there that didn’t think that line was important, i am here to prove you wrong!!!

this is the line where noelle says that if this was a dream, she would grow wings and fly away— but in this version, she says “big angel wings” specifically. very interesting!
the two (2) other notable changes in weird route

the infamous “you whispered noelle’s name…” line is slightly different. slightly.
the “kris called for help” lines still say that kris is the one doing it, but this one does not say the subject at all. this is normal for japanese, regardless, it’s still very interesting that it doesn’t say “you”. it is still differentiated from the “kris” lines, but not specifically referring to you (the player).
the other difference is so minor that i’m not even sure what it is or if it’s different from the english version.

spamton’s speech patterns are entirely different in the japanese translation, but they get the same message across. they include:
switching between formal and informal language
using weird mixtures of hiragana, katakana, english letters and kanji
using katakana re (レ) instead of hiragana shi (し)
cutting off words
random spacing
and occasionally using “die” and “death” as homophones for “dai” and “desu”
it’s so wacky and unnerving and strange, i love it :D
other spamton lore bits:
mike’s name is the same (マイク maiku). i somehow forgot to translate the mike-related dialogue. i will get back to you all if there’s anything of note.

the word for “garbage noise” is 雑音, with about the same meaning. unsurprisingly, the same word (the exact same phrase, in fact) is used for both the addison’s line and the gaster phone call line.

the last thing (i think)
in the roaring cutscene, the japanese word for “chaos” is said (in the “all will be plunged into chaos” line), but then says the transliterated version of the word (カオス) in parentheses. tsuwahasu noted that it’s “keyword-like” in the playthrough i watched. is this important? i have no idea

Kamen Rider Gavv Episode 38 Production Blog Translation

Looking at the Next Episode
It was pretty cool when Gavv disappeared from that high place. An “Ura Kamen Rider” on “Gavv’s” action direction will be released for streaming on this day, June eighth. Please give this project which covers the stories behind the action a watch.
Now, for the next episodes. Episodes 39 and 40. Rakia has told Shoma, “I will never forgive the person who killed Comel”. After Hanto, the story shifts its focus to Rakia. That’s right. “Gavv” is already getting close to its fortieth episode.
For those episodes, Shojiro Nakazawa will be directing episodes in “Gavv” for the first time. He participated after finishing “Boonboomger”. The Gochizos seem to have good synergy with his style of direction. We hope you look forward to it.
Kohei Shoji appeared for a little while as Takamichi in Nakazawa’s “Ten Gokaiger” (2021), but these episodes of “Gavv” are the director’s first time properly working with him. He already thought highly of him [TN: it doesn’t specify who’s who, help], saying, “It’s interesting that he thinks about the performances in so many ways”. Rakia has overcome many challenges, but he still has one giant obstacle to climb. New, adorable merchandise has also become available to buy on the Kamen Rider Store. Maybe another benefit of early filming is the ability to improve merchandise releases. Make sure to have cash on hand.

Thank you for watching episode 38! Hanto finally reunited with the Granute he’s chased for many years. Hanto discovers that the Granute is different from how he’d expected them to be, and his feelings become conflicted.

Farewell to a Grudge
The great idea of making animal-shaped Japanese confectioneries from the A in a circle in the logo of “Ando”, which can be said as “animaru”, was an unexpected idea brought up at a script meeting. After last episode’s zoo fieldwork, in this episode, they’re actually making Japanese confectioneries! With assistance from food coordinators, wonderful “animal sweets” were made.

In contrast to the colorful animal sweets, the story contents of this episode are quite serious. Kenji gives up his own life, and Hanto is presented with the ultimate choice.
Yusuke Hino performed with all of his energy in order to match the dread-filled performance of Kenji’s actor, Mutsuo Yoshioka. Hino passionately portrays Hanto, who had emotional moments in episodes 27 and 28. He even more unusual scenes asked of him than before in these episodes, but he did them wonderfully.
With all that said, there was a Granute involved in the snack business outside of the Stomach family? (Laugh)

Hanto’s final decision…! To cut ties with his desire for revenge, he lets his enemy, Kenji, live.

A favorite riverbank location of Director Morota’s was chosen for this scene. “Falling into water” is common in Morota works. The underwater explosive mechanisms are also amazing.
Since the episode was shot in the extreme cold of midwinter, it was very difficult to film. To all of the staff members, and the suit actor Shotaro Kawashima, thank you for doing good work in this cold weather!

A Husk of Hatred
Continuing from last time, along with the Hanto-and-Kenji storyline, the Jiip-and-Shoma drama that swirls with hatred also reaches its climax. The “Bakibaki Stick Gochizo”, which was revealed as merchandise a fair amount ahead of time, appears at last!
To think that Jiip would undergo modification surgery himself… This is another “side of hatred”. Even so, Nyelv looks like he’s up to something…

Lizel and Jiip’s relationship has changed over the course of the story. Koga and Kamata, who have shared many scenes in the second half of “Gavv”, have grown closer together on the sets as they perform more scenes together (Laugh).

Jiip’s first transformation into Bitter Gavv! I can also say this for the Rider design, but the unconventional transformation pose was very striking.

Koga is also a big fan of the Kamen Rider series, and this transformation was a dear wish of his!

For the design of “Bitter Gavv Bakibaki Sticks”, it stood out from the early stage with the pattern differences from when “Bitter Gavv SparkinGummy Form” was designed. From a crooked design with randomly arranged potato sticks, it was acclaimed as “looking like a mummy! (compliment)”.

The suit actor is Kazuma Sakai, who also plays Jiip in Granute form. His light movements and acrobatic action were as captivating as ever in this episode. He fights like a snack Rider, like throwing the potato sticks on his body as weapons.
The inside stories behind Gavv’s action, which has something surprising in store every week, are now available in “Ura Kamen Rider”, which will be released today! You should absolutely see the full version, which is currently streaming on TTFC!

Jiip overwhelms the two Kamen Riders as Bitter Gavv, but Master Gavv was still very strong…! Here’s the eye-opening shot of Master Gavv standing on top of a transmission tower from this episode’s fight scene.

You might have thought it was added in post-production, but it was safely filmed while hanging from a crane! It’s absolutely scary, even if you don’t have a fear of heights, but Nawata’s professional grit was incredible…!

The final scene was a surprising development that left a bad taste in the mouth! The reformed worker Kenji is purged by Glotta, who has become a disposer of stray Granutes.

and i’ve been here for everything since then but… nothing close to 2 whole chapters. even now it’s hard to really comprehend everything that will happen from now on. but i accept it!

Every character stands at their own crossroads.
The Ando Revival Project
While the Granute world candy company, Stomach Inc., is in disarray, a request to liven up a Japanese confectionery store experiencing a slowdown unexpectedly comes to the Happy Parade. Otoya Imaizumi played Hiroto, the small client who brought in dango from his parents’ shop, “Ando”, as a gift.

He expressed Hiroto’s character with detailed acting that shows a childlike side in plenty of expressions, while also acting reliable!
Hiroto’s mother, the owner of Ando, is played by Misa Yoshino, and the Japanese confectionery craftsman, Kenji, is played by Mutsuo Yoshioka.

Yoshioka also appeared in the Toei movie-stage “Shakkotai” (It’s kind of a similar role). In this episode, he plays a rugged character who’s burdened with serious things, but even when filming outdoors on cold days, he said, “I don’t need a coat!”, and gave a hot-blooded performance.
Chinen has been eating many different treats while filming up to now, but since he already loved Japanese confectionery, it seems like he could approach the tastings for the dango and dorayaki with even more excitement than usual.

If only it were this good…! Shoma also prepares to gather information in order to increase the popularity of “Ando”. For the employees of an anything agency, it’s heartwarming to see them grow in ways other than physical strength.

An agile and acrobatic battle that seems to say, “Do you know the gravity of the suit actor Kazuma Sakai, who is active across the world?!”, along with Koga’s voiceovers, convey Jiip’s spirit.

And defeats two enemies at once with a kick with spread legs…! (And the landing where he falls back afterwards also has an unrefined Valen-ness to it.) The techniques that apply character and emotion to the action are wonderful every time.
It feels like we have a full stomach from this sequence alone! But the scene that Hanto sees unfold with his own eyes after de transforming…

Looking at the Next Episode
The Master and Over forms have arrived. It was interesting action that you couldn’t take your eyes off of! The duo of Director Sugihara and Action Director Fujita is the strongest of them all. It was a treasure trove of ideas.
During a meeting to discuss power-up forms, it came up that a gummy final form was alright, but felt unsatisfying… So we did a two-form power-up, similar to Kamen Rider Agito’s Burning and Shining forms, or Kamen Rider Geiz Revive Fury and Typhoon. Then, Bandai came up with the idea of a jar that gets flipped upside down. The face that appears is like a trompe l’œil optical illusion. The material is also particularly jelly-like. For those who like holding the Gochipod, please enjoy how it feels.
To be honest, these two forms look completely different, but they use the same undersuit, components, and shape. They contain many clever design ideas. It’s interesting when you compare them. Please look forward to their use from here on out. We’re also grateful to the Toei Tokusatsu Fan Club members who cooperated with us over long filming sessions for episode 36. It took on that look (of being super-crowded) after editing. The things filmed around the venue are connected in many places.
And then next week will be… a Japanese confectionery rush. A request to restore a Japanese confectionery shop. A premonition of a Gochizo’s birth. And someone that Hanto comes across… Someone he couldn’t have forgotten even for a moment. It will be delivered by Nobuhiro Mouri as its writer, and Satoshi Morota as its director. After the power-up comes Hanto’s destined opponent. In addition, Vram’s broken belt and Jiip’s slow-moving, magma-like thoughts will also be of interest. “Gavv’s” story won’t slow down. The Episode in Short
Thank you for watching episode 36! Continuing from the last episode, it’s directed by Teruaki Sugihara! Director Sugihara was last responsible for Valen’s power-up arc in episodes 27 and 28, but this time, he was in charge of an episode where a new Gavv form appears.
Last time, Director Sugihara poured his heart and soul into filming the final battle between Hanto and Suga, but this time, he captured the protagonist Shoma’s conflict and determination.
Sugihara has watched over the cast since the pilot episode. Let’s look back at episode 36, which he put all of his energy into creating!

“U.M.A.”, Attacked
“U.M.A. (Ultimate Music Achievers)”, the talk of the town, who had their music video released exclusively on TTFC last episode. The lovely folks at the art department made plenty of fan merch (props) for them. The fans saying “Only horses are winners”, “Neigh with us”, and et cetera certainly make one curious about the full story of this band (Laugh).
Rittsun is such a big fan of them that she brings a horse mask. 🐴 By the way, the orange outfit that Rittsun was wearing is the color of carrots, a horse’s staple food (Laugh).

Since this is a very important episode containing Gavv’s power-up and a showdown with Lango, the script for this Sugihara arc was also created with an aim for visual richness.
Last episode, there were the settings of an “airplane interior” and “airport”, but this time, it’s a “U.M.A.” concert venue!
The concert’s audience was played by TTFC members! We asked them to bring homemade fan merch and glow sticks. Thank you to everybody who prepared their own support merchandise that show their personality! I’m sure there were many people baffled by the part in the outline sent to the members who won the raffle that said to “please come with carrot-themed props” (Laugh).

The filming session was time-consuming and started early in the morning, but we thank everyone for their support!
They were also greeted by Director Sugihara and cast members like Chinen.

A lot was written about U.M.A. in the last episode’s “The Episode in Short” section as well, but there’s one more behind-the-scenes story.
Since not many people are able to perform with musical instruments while wearing horse masks, it was very difficult to cast the members of “U.M.A.”
The person who then came to help us was [Fumiki] Yoshikawa, the assistant producer for the show airing alongside Gavv at that time, “Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger”. AP Yoshikawa’s childhood friend Hayato Sagawa accepted the role of the dapple-gray Shige (drummer), and then invited his neighborhood bandmates to make up the rest of “U.M.A.”!
You should definitely check out the music of Hayato Sagawa— along with Crab Kani Club, who provided the song used in this episode!

Ruler of Snacks, Master Gavv
In episode 36, Shoma’s actor Hidekazu Chinen had plenty of scenes to show off in, but even among those, his one-on-one scene with Lango’s actor Takashi Tsukamoto is an especially important one.
It’s a scene where Shoma shows his determination, with all of the experiences he’s had up to now as encouragement. Chinen showed a look brimming with the confidence he’s developed, one which only Director Sugihara, who has seen the cast grow since episode 1, could have filmed.

The Gochipod has the words “OVER” and “MASTER” engraved into it. As the item that brings out the power of the strongest Gavv, the meeting on the Gochipod’s toy design reached the pinnacle of difficulty. During that, Bandai came up with the idea of two-way use that alternates between the powerful “Over Mode” and the smart “Master Mode”, which is innovative for both play and design.
When the Gochipod opens, an “up-and-down image” design appears, making it an excellent item that can be enjoyed in two ways at once!

“Kamen Rider Gavv Master Mode” was revealed for the first time in this episode. Contrasting against the impactful “Over Mode”, it has an elegant design that’s reminiscent of the PoppinGummy form, bringing it full circle. It truly is a fitting name to crown the “strongest Gavv” with!

From Action Director Fujita’s idea, Master Mode is a form with super-speed in order to make up for the weak point of Over Mode, which specializes in the power of finishing opponents in a single blow. Lango is crushed with this blink-of-an-eye speed in episode 36 as well.
Furthermore, it is also powerful to make the best of each mode’s strong points while alternating between “Master” and “Over” during the battle! It was truly exhilarating to see the fight play out while switching between the two forms!
“Gavv” has been a Granute-human hybrid from the beginning, and the forward-bent posture which incorporates a “wild flavor” into the action has become characteristic of it, but Director Sugihara had the idea to have him bend even further down, creating a striking pose that feels even more wild.

Furthermore, as the name “Master” suggests, the form has the power to rule over all snacks, and so it also has the ability to produce previously seen items like the “Chocodan Gun” and the “Zakuzaku ChipSlasher”!
The weapons’ abilities are well-balanced between short- and long-distance range. It’s an all-purpose style of fighting while summoning various strengths! Truly a “Master”!

The free-moving camerawork special to the duo of Director Sugihara and Action Director Fujita, and the action which makes maximum use of the complicated location sites, were a series of surprises.
There were also scenes that were shown with Kamen Riders filmed on a green-screen and backgrounds filmed with a 360 camera and then edited in, but there were also many shots that were large-scale even for the cinematographers, filming Gavv while suspended in midair!
I definitely hope that you watch this action as many times as you want by streaming it.

The finishing Rider Kick puts Lango to a stop. It’s a “Sokutō kick” technique used in karate and the like with added rotation. It was also a fixation of Action Director Fujita to have a memorable kick that isn’t midair be used.
Furthermore, the successive attack done while Lango is flying around on the many encircling bottles (which, on closer inspection, all have different appearances!). I think that this was also an explosive arrangement from Director Sugihara, who never runs out of ideas!

The strongest enemy, Lango, has been defeated, but Lango’s exit will have great consequences for the Granute world, and therefore the Stomach family.
